Any idea how long it typically is after Eir pull fibre through their manholes until it's available?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,151 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Could be a number of months. Pulling the cables is only one part of it.

If someone was to sign up to Eir broadband now, they'll get hit with the E4 increase in April, correct? At what point can they sign up and not get hit with this years E4 increase? A few years back I think I signed up in February and they didn't apply the increase that year because it was so close to Aprils date(there was a window allowed, maybe 60 days?). Can anyone, maybe one of the eir guys here confirm?

Work will reimburse me for my broadband connection so I'm considering switching to Eir 5GB but will try avoid the E4 increase for the coming year if I can. Yes, I know 5GB is overkill but if they're paying, why not. Lastly, can someone confirm the model number of the router Eir send you for the 5GB again please. Thank you

It’s the Sagemcom W7, but there are different model numbers under it.

It looks identical to this Youfibre router -

I think you have to sign up in March to not have the price increase for that year.

There's a €100 bill credit added if you sign up at the moment.

Sagemcom are an OEM for various telecoms companies, so the spec of those routers can be tweaked to suit. Eir's a bit different to other Iliad companies as uses ONTs rather than plugging the router directly into the fibre line.

Any of them that support WiFi 7 seem to be more more less the same platform.

Slight digression; has anyone had any luck with asking Eir to increase the upload speed to 500 Mb/s? Which I believe is the latest upload speed on the 5 Gb/s offering.

I'm currently have a 250 Mb/s upload. I have tried powering off the ONT and my own router (Ubiquiti) to see if a simple reset unlocks the increased upload speed. This hasn't worked. I plan on plugging the Eir WiFi 7 box back in again over the weekend and doing a power cycle to see if that unlocks the increased upload speed.

No particular need for the 500 Mb/s upload to be clear - just more curious as to how responsive Eir are to customer requests. And if I do have to contact them - is there any channel other than phone I can try? I really don't have time to spend on a call.

    Thanks, John

That's the upload speed that's offered on their 5Gb plan. Virgin Media offer 500Mb/s upload on their 5Gb plan but Eir only offers 250Mb/s.

Thanks. The Eir offering is advertised at 500 Mb/s upload on switcher.ie

Could be a typo unless Eir's being nudged to speed up the uploads because of Virgin's move.

Something strange going on with my eir broadband. Downstream bandwidth remains close to 5Gbps. However, upstream bandwidth has declined from 250Mbps first to about 10Mbps and now to about 1Mbps. I have a service call in with them but they give themselves 6 business days to do anything and this slow upload speed makes many things unusable (Alexa, for example).

I'd say Switcher has the wrong info but you should have gotten an email explaining your contract from Eir, the upload speed should be listed there.

Did you try the usual things? Turn the router off and on along with the ont?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭Sam the Sham

I turned the router on and off. But the ONT is covered in stickers saying not to power it down.

You can safely power down the ONT and power it back on again. It will just reboot and reconnect to the OLT at the network side of the line.

5Gb is launching on the NBI network with eir from Tuesday 20/Jan. Anyone on the current 2Gb plan will be upgraded free of charge.

    Just FYI

Nice one👍 It a far cry from when I got my free upgrade from 1meg to 3, I thought I was king of the castle, made a huge difference in fairness.

Yeah it's amazing to think how far Ireland has come in terms of broadband speeds. I'm in an area that can get 5Gb with eir and Virgin are upgrading their own network up to 10Gb here too. I remember being absolutely delighted years and years ago when the eircom VDSL+ upgrade meant I could get 70Mb download speeds!

2013, I went from 12 to 65 fttc, rock solid connection I was the second customer to get connected on the cabinet.

Just a pity they don't seem to be able to fix the constant DNS errors on the W7 Box!

Here's where Eir really fall short. I reported the fault on 10 January. In the meantime, broadband has now disappeared entirely. Here it's the 20 January and there's still no sign of a technician. I was told yesterday (at noon) that "escalation is closed for the day" (whatever that's supposed to mean) but that by today my case would be escalated, after which they give themselves another 48 hours to send out a technician. In other words, it's apparently perfectly normal for them to take the guts of 2 weeks just to respond to a technical problem.

Not impressed. Thinking of cancelling and going back to Virgin.

Go through the complaints process, their complaints team was quite good in my experience in the past.

    Fill out this form -

    Thanks. Will do.

That's the bit I'd be afraid of, everything's grand until something goes wrong and then Eir are a disaster when it comes to fixing anything. VM in fairness are brilliant regarding faults that need someone to call out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭feargantae

Ring 1901 and ask them for a "temporary broadband solution". If you have TV they'll give you a 5G FMS with unlimited data, and if you don't have TV they'll give you a PrePay MiFi dongle with 50GB of data. I've had TV-less customers get the FMS too so ymmv. You just have to go to your local store to collect. Obviously not an ideal situation to be without your fixed line service but it's a stopgap nonetheless! Hopefully the technicians fix it asap for you.

I have the Eir 5GB fibre broadband since it was released, originally was 2GB then upgraded to 5GB, lately I have noticed that the upload speed has reduced significantly, some times speed test gives just 12Mbps upload, other times 70Mbps upload, same thing at 3-4am low upload speeds, no where near 250Mbps

contacted eir, waiting on engineer call out.

    Hi all ,

Since I’ve changed to eir 2 months ago it’s been nothing but a mess with WiFi dropping non stop after the first week , I’ve tried everything such as trying a mesh system with tp link deco M4 (only to find out that the M4’s are useless for a mesh system)

anyway my current problem is eir have just sent me out a new modem , I’ve set it up and it’s working but now both of my eir boosters will not connect to this new modem no matter what I try , I’ve plugged them into the modem with Ethernet , I’ve tried WPS, I’ve tried resetting the boosters , nothing working. Both boosters are just constantly flashing red (link light)

    please can somebody help!

anyone had their ONT upgraded? presume you need to order 2gb + for this to happen? mine is maxing out at 920 on a 1gb connection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,449 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yes with OpenEir/SIRO you sometimes have to order 2/5Gb for the ONT to be changed to the XGS-PON ONT with a 10Gb port but it probably wouldn't change anyway if you were connecting it to a device with a 1Gb NIC, there's some overhead.

    XGS-PON ONT (10Gb) - Huawei OptiXstar EN8010Ts-20

    GPON ONT (1Gb) - Huawei OptiXstar HG8010Hv6-10

Its a Unifi dream machine pro so i can put a mgig SFP+ in the WAN2 port and it’ll negotiate 2.5 on the rj45 side of the module.

The WAS-110 / X-ONU-SFPP could possibly work, but there's been no posts of people trying it with any other provider in Ireland other than Virgin.

Plus the fact you would presumably be currently on GPON, I don't know whether just installing one would transfer you to XGS-PON or does more need to be done on their side.

On FiberMall's website it said - "the default /etc/mibs/prx300_1U.ini supports
    Huawei OLT"
