2025 was the year that a broadcaster pulled out of Saorview for the first time (UCB Radio Ch 2011). January 16th 2026 is the date that RTE Radio 1 extra, RTE 2xm, RTE Pluse, RTE JR radio and RTE CHILL will fully vacate the platform.

In fairness they have exited at this point they are just broadcast signals letting people go they are closing.

It will be interest to see if at the very least VMTV ONE +1 starts broadcasting on Saorview, and as every other year will it go HD, highly unlikely.

Do the digital radio stations that exited provide any real space on the platform for TV services?

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

It will be interesting to see virgin media one +1 and virgin media one in HD on saorview just like tg4 +1 and tg4 in HD

Virgin Media should be made do it, don't care about +1. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks ie. cost and all of that, VM1 picture quality is really bad and hard to watch.

On Saorview rte jr radio is back on, while on the rte radio player RTE jr is replaced with RTE kids.

Radio 1 extra, Pulse, 2xm and Chill have already been removed.

All the current radio stations on Saorview take up about 3% of the available capacity - around 1.5 Mb/s on average across the two MUXs.

If Saorview dumped all the test/dummy channels there would be more capacity available than the closure of the RTE radio channels.

For comparison, the RTE TV channels use 3.2 Mb/s each and the VM channels 1.4 Mb/s each.

    Thanks is this an average

Do you have a break down of what is used, by channel.

Could the SD channels all increase their quality?

Saorview is really run like a poor value for money public service - slow to change (or never changes) and wasteful of resources. It’s on air 15 years now and only still does just about enough. It’s certainly not the type of service that is going to lure in new viewers! Saorview Connect was far too late to the market, poorly implemented and ended as a failure. Anyways, I’ve given up on Saorview – only use it now as a backup service just in case. If my external antenna blew down I wouldn't fix it.

In terms of capacity, across the two MUXs there is of course room for much more HD content - if they were motivated enough to think of the viewer.

Ditch the Saorview info channels (meaningless), ditch the +1s (they are becoming irrelevant) and ditch all the Saorview test card channels - then all the RTE channels (including RTE News), TG4, all the VM channels & Sky News could broadcast in HD. Leave only RTE Jr, Cula4, Oireachtas & Challenge as SD.

It felt to me that RTE had to be dragged kicking and screaming off analogue.* Combine that with TV3/VMTV's reluctance to pay for carriage (forcing the introduction of "pay by bitrate") and you're left with a dull service.

** in fairness, the government's insistence of finding a commercial partner for pay DTT (even though ITV Digital failed several years before) might have played a part in that too.

I wonder are there many people out there who have Saorview as their only means of tv viewing ? If you add up subscribers to Sky,Vodafone, eir and Virgin, there can't be many left for Saorview only or am I wrong ? Personally, I've only ever seen Saorview as a kitchen tv or bedroom tv service, but with multi room boxes now available from all the pay operators, even this option is outdated. Even a modern tv that has all the Irish players on it, is a way better option than Saorview, at least you would get all the Irish channels in HD.

This would have always been the case before Saorview. Ireland had a high take up of Satellite, Cable and MMDS.

Very few people were still in 4 TV land by 2005, by 1998 even less people were in 3 TV land on the launch of TV3.

And that's not including Spillover and Deflectors.

So local Terrestrial TV was never the only means of TV viewing for most people in Ireland.

BTW I grew up in 2 TV Land …. in Dublin.

saorview only from memory. it's in some document tg4 put out about launching new channels

The +1's are the most valuable part of Saorview as far as I'm concerned. I wish VM would add them as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,901 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

I'm pretty much Saorview only. I got a cheap Firestick a few months ago that I mainly use for Channel 4 but that's it.

I was also using Saorview for Radio 1 Extra but they stupidly decided to get rid of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,740 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Your not reliant on Saorview, does the firestick have access to the Irish broadcast players?

I'd have liked to have seen a repeat channel over the +1s, aka RTÉ THREE, maybe the film channel via an agreement with TG4 and Screen Ireland.

I was reliant on Saorview until recently. Officially the Firestick doesn't have access to the RTE Player but somebody here gave me a workaround. If it wasn't for that, then no. Even so it's glitchy and gets stuck during ad breaks etc and has to be restarted. A lot of the time it takes over an hour to watch a 40 minute programme.

    No access to anything officially.

The instructions in the Firestick thread help.

there is now, the android TV app was updated a couple of months ago. needs to be side loaded & installed with another app since it's now bundled as split apks - not as difficult as it sounds. works well for me, except the skip steps on the player aren't great.

tg4 player is available on it too. vm play was there & still shows on my previously installed apps but someone said it doesn't come up on search anymore, tried & it doesn't but I've the uk app store on mine, they might've restricted it to just the Irish one since it got a lot of bad reviews from people thinking it was for uk vm

thanks thats good to know, will have to see can i get that sorted so. have access to the players on an apple tv anyway so im not too badly off for now but its handy to have it on the firestick too at times

Particularly poor when watching sporting events. I know you can access a HD version via the player, but there's no real excuse at this stage of claiming to be a PSB and providing a poor quality SD picture. And don't forget, it's not even a full SD signal (544x576).

Saorview would be our main TV, we have fta satellite but Saorview is still the primary viewed channels.

Have access to RTE Player/3 player/TG4 Player on the LG TV, again Saorview is still our primary viewed channels.

My daughter would watch alot of box sets on Netflix, but when it comes to I'm a celebrity get me out of here or love Island Saorview Virgin media channels on Saorview are the winner for her.
