Tom Farrell is still in contention as well, but he's as old as the rest. I think it's a risk to have 4 or 5 players playing the same position over the age of 30 and with the exception of Ringrose well over 30. Given Aki is mainly a 12 who can play 13 I'd argue Postlethwaite is the most natural available replacement, but then he doesn't start ahead of Hume and McCloskey at Ulster so that might count against him.

I think Postlethwaite is a natural 12, and behind the best 12 on the island. He'll start to feature in squads the way that Kelleher features behind Sheehan, but not this 6N.

Murphy is a decent enough kicker and passer. The rest of his game is sub-standard. Big fan of Devine who has an X-factor about him but is a very poor kicker. Havent seen enough of Gunne

Looks like Casey will be grand for the 6N anyway so panic over, but still need one of the other lads to stake a claim as 3rd choice

I don’t think anyone has been panicking.

Casey is a good player, but JGP is still the undisputed number 1.

    Predicting the 36 man squad:

    Forwards

    • Props: Andrew Porter (potentially injured), Jack Boyle (potentially injured), Paddy McCarthy (potentially injured), Tadhg Furlong, Finlay Bealham, Thomas Clarkson, → Tom O’Toole & Scott Wilson (if other players are injured) ←

    • Locks: James Ryan, Tadhg Beirne, Edwin Edogbo, Joe McCarthy
    • Back Row: Caelan Doris, Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan, Nick Timoney, Cian Prendergast, Tom Ahern

    Scrumhalves:

    • 1st choice- Jamison Gibson-Park,
    • 2nd choice- Nathan Doak
    • 3rd choice- Craig Casey

    Fly-halves:

    • 1st choice- Harry Byrne
    • 2nd choice- Sam Prendergast
    • 3rd choice- Jack Crowley

    Centres

    • Garry Ringrose, James Hume, Robbie Henshaw, Stuart McCloskey

Back Three / Wings / Fullback

    • James Lowe, Rob Baloucoune, Jacob Stockdale, Michael Lowry, Tommy O’Brien, JJ Kenny, Zac Ward, Ciaran Frawley

    Training Panelist’s

    • Jude Postlethwaite

There’s no chance Edogbo and Ahern make it at lock and Joe McCarthy doesn’t (I would have JMcC with Edogbo, Ryan, Beirne).
Jimmy O’Brien back in training gets in ahead of Lowry too I’d imagine.
Agree with you on the rest.

Ranking only the half-backs here in the way you’ve done is particularly funny.

Doak before Casey doesn’t make any sense except for injury worry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,238 ✭✭✭Rugbyf565

feel like the rest of the positions pick themselves tbf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,238 ✭✭✭Rugbyf565

Doak is the most inform scrum half in Ireland, Casey’s struggled with form and injury

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,863 ✭✭✭sprucemoose

half backs are out of order for both positions, hume is behind farrell, baloucoune and lowry are unlikely but definitely not both of them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭Vinnie222

Casey had a solid game last week before his injury

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Personal opinion. Casey even at half mast is ahead of Doak at peak. I feel Doak is a 10 adapting out of necessity to being a 9 whereas Casey has all the instincts & pace to be a bigger menace & threat.

I wouldn't use the words bigger and Casey together 😋

I'm probably biased but I think Casey has comfortably the best pass of any of our 9s, it's a bullet and he has great range. His running lines are much improved and his box kicking too (especially) compared to when he first came through but JGP still has the edge in those two aspects in terms of consistency. Some of JGP's clearance kicking in the AIs was absolutely superb (peak Conor Murray-esque!).

As well as being there to finish off a move I think Casey's great for a snipe, he's averaging a try every five matches in red, virtually identical to JGP in blue. He can choose the wrong time to snipe the odd time would be a bit of a criticism.

I'd have no issues with him at 9 but I think there's a drop-off to 3rd choice, or at least we need to see more live options there. JGP appears to be fit as a fiddle but once the legs go they go fast.

In terms of the wider squad, I really hope Farrell shakes things up a little with an eye on 2027

Agree with all of this. Most natural 9 to me after JGP & Casey is Gunne. But he’s 2 years younger than Doak / Murphy and not getting significant game time yet due to JGP factor and McGrath being both the ‘go to captain’ for Leo when the nationals are out and showing good form with most Leinster caps. But age is in his favour at both ends of that equation. I don’t worry about the transition as the system is working well

Casey clearly isn’t the player you think he is.

he is yet to put in a performance at international level to screams ‘top international halfback’.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭johnh6767

to be fair the only ‘top international halfback’ at the moment is JGP, but others will get there in time including the 10 shirt

I think Casey this season isn't quite where he was last season, when he was excellent. Imo, he was extremely unfortunate with the timing of his injury to miss the 6 Nations and I think he would've featured more heavily there if fit.

I'd be in agreement (and have been saying for a long time) that the quality of his pass is the best on the island.

We've seen some good performances from him in green, Fiji being the obvious one while he was also good in SA prior to his injury, but he's also struggled for minutes against Tier 1 teams.

He also brings a leadership element, which this team seems to lack on occasion, since the retirement of big characters like Sexton and POM.

With JPG pushing on, I think he's the natural sucessor and needs to start seeing more game time, imo.

As of right now, Gunne is all potential and hype. Scored a nice try in the URC final last year but other than that he’s yet to actually do anything. Murphy and Doak are both important players for their province and actually have a body of work to their name. Gunne should be nowhere near those two until he actually shows something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 852 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

Competent but limited is how I would describe him. I like him but hes not keeping the opposition international coaches up at night wondering how they will counteract his brilliance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,301 ✭✭✭TRC10

People say “oh we can’t play Casey or Doak because they’re not good at X or Y and they’re not as good as JGP”.

But here’s the thing. JGP wasn’t as good as JGP, until he was given a go. Casey and Doak are better scrum halves now than JGP was when he first got capped for Ireland in 2020, when he wasn’t even Leinster’s starting 9. But this was in a time when Farrell wasn’t so conservative and was actually willing to give guys a go. So who’s to say that if they got a run of games, one of Casey or Doak might actually turn out to be quite good? They’re both good for their province. Why not Ireland? We’ll never know if course, because we can’t possibly leave out the great JGP for a game because he’s so amazing. Except once upon a time, he wasn’t.

The problem is, Farrell found a core group of players who could win him games from 2022-23, and ever since, has refused to move on from anyone in that group unless someone retires.

    Did anyone actually say that?

I also think the statements about how poor or inexperienced JGP was prior to getting capped are overblown. Leinster signed him in May 2016 as a 24-year-old who already had 35 games (800+ minutes) of Super Rugby experience under his belt, and he then played 93 times for Leinster, starting 44 times for 3,806 minutes before he made his Irish debut in November 2020.

Unquestionably he improved a lot over that period, with his kicking particularly coming along a huge amount.

Pretty sure the OP means inexperienced at international level. Which is kinda the point.

Literally whenever someone mentions the possibility of anyone else getting a go at 9, we hear “we can’t because JGP is just so darn good”
