Can he achieve much if he loses the mid terms? Is he pretty much a lame duck president then in terms of ability to really shape US foreign policy?

Last of the spec ops flights due in this eve. So if anything is going to happen, it will prob be in the next 72hours.

Will he go ahead of them? Would he declare a stste of war and move ahead without approval anyway?

Well, his modus operandi is, 'try and stop me.' He does things, there's a hue and a cry, and eventually some of them kind of get undone, usually by the courts.

If he loses the midterms, if the Democrats control 66 votes in the Senate and a majority in the house, he's gone, though Vance gets the gig until he's impeached.

If he loses the midterms but the Democrats get fewer than 60 seats in the Senate, then getting anything done by Congress to reign him in will be difficult if not impossible, so he'll continue with the 'try and stop me' governance he's doing.

So, it really matters not just that he lose the midterms, but he loses, well, bigly especially in the Senate.

I'd say it's unlikely, he'll lose enough that the mischief he gets up to domestically will be curtailed, but foreign policy adventures will go on.

I still can’t get over that Putin lies to Trump about Ukraine’s drone attack on his residence.

Trump announces it to the world like a fool who believes his master.

Then Trump states Putin was probably lying to me.

And that’s it??? We move on.

Imagine it was Zelensky who lied to him and made a show of him on the world stage.

Did it ever occur to him that maybe Putin has been lying about everything else all along??

What a dumb piece of **** he really is.

I can believe it. Trump genuinely doesn't give a ****. He just wants to moan about both sides and they pressure them into a peace deal to take the credit.

Did any of them hit something worthwhile? Didn't see anything on the news about Moscow suffering an attack

I've a feeling these are just cheap ass crap drones designed to wear out Russian AA to make way for bigger booms.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

Yeah that's my expectation too unfortunately. Its incredible that the Democrats haven't taken advantage of his blatant pandering to the US's traditional enemy and his abandoning of the US position as self-appointed moral guardians of the globe. There are enough centrists and liberals in the US to whom these issues do still matter, regardless of their concerns over Jerbs and Immigintz. But I guess that reflects the big Achilles heal in US politics - when it comes down to it, outside of the MAGA movement, the Dems and GOP are all just millionaires, two sides of the same coin. The Dems don't really know how to change their playbook to appeal to the ordinary blue collar Americans. It's such a simply play, the one thing that Trump nailed. He bypassed all the traditional party-political "rules of engagement" and just baited the blue collar voters into backing him. Not dissimilar to Farage and BoJo in the UK, but Supersized.

The Dems, if they had their act together and messaging on-point, should be tearing lumps out of the Republicans in the mid terms. Maybe they do, and maybe they will - maybe we just don't get those news angles over here. But I just doesn't seem to be echoing across the Atlantic. All the stupid stunts he's pulled and he's still there. F**k me, the Yanks are either thick as s**t or their moral compass really has fallen that low.

It's been that way all along. I mean he literally incited an insurrection and attack on the Capitol… brazened it out… and the f**kwits vote him back in.

He's either incredible stupid and doesn't see what the world see's as Putin leads him around by the nose. Or, which is more likely, he couldn't care less about democratic principles and just sees Putin as being able to offer him more riches and so babbles away in an attempt to distract from what he's up to.

It's Putin that I can't figure out - he's clearly got a kindred spirit in Trump, so why, instead of acting like Dr. Evil, he isn't leveraging that more and getting the 'master of the deal' to finish VZ is beyond me.

They are bringing in far too much hardware for the boarding of a single tanker, and it sounds like the wrong equipment for that task too. Might just be transiting through to the Middle East.

Or kidnapping King Frederick of Denmark

They hit an ammo dump, a refinery, and a factory, all on "the far side" of Moscow from a Ukrainian perspective, so they had had to go around it to get there. They may well have chosen to go closer than really necessary to cause maximum disruption to Moscow's air traffic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 988 ✭✭✭vswr

They wouldn't have assembled the helicopters in Fairford if they were transiting.

edit: there is 2 Chinooks and 5x MH60's in Fairford, by the time you account for support kit and staff, that accounts for all of the C-17's which went into Fairford from the US (circa 10)

    Thats a big move ..

Britain and France have formally agreed to put boots on the ground in Ukraine as part of a potential peace deal with RussiaThey will form part of a 'multinational force for Ukraine' that will 'operate on Ukranian soil' while 'securing Ukraine's skies and seas and building an armed forces fit for the future'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,133 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

"as part of a potential peace deal"

Putin will not agree to a peace deal of any sort. Has the penny not dropped yet on this?

Totally agree with you about the Dems siding with the millionaires. However in almost all recent elections over the past 12 months the Dems of various hues have won, some massively. Hoping the Sanders, AOC, Mandami wing come good.

This. Brilliant move by the Brits and French. A mighty gesture they know is totally unacceptable to Russia yet makes them look good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 739 ✭✭✭farmerval

Is that not part of the point, keep presenting logical plans for peace and keep exposing Putin as the one refusing to engage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Virgil°

This is exactly it. There isn't going to be a peace deal because Putin knows he's dead the second he signs it and reality sets in at home.

But unfortunately the rotting pumpkin in the white house has to be coddled.

The Dems may take the House but there is literally no possibility of them winning 60 Senate seats let alone 66. To get to a bare 51, they have to hold all they have and gain four of N Carolina, Maine, Texas, Florida, Alaska, Iowa and Ohio. After that you're looking at the likes of Nebraska and Montana.

Months ago, I thought that Trump might patch things up with Musk before the midterms, if Musk's hacking had won the election for him.

No-one is going to intercept a "Russian" ship. Russia is going to keep the ship, though.

There is absolutely zero chance the Democrats will have 66 or even 60 seats in the senate after the mid terms. At a push and even this would be a surprise they might sneak 51 and get a majority but currently sitting on 47 seats in the senate even that is a big ask. The house they have a more realistic chance of winning.

Villages in Northern Ukraine are being evacuated in preparation from an expected Russian offensive in the North.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,496 ✭✭✭✭Jelle1880

Supposedly large troop numbers, but not much else. I hope Ukraine has prepared for this.

If they're massing troops North of the border I'd expect to hear about some nice HIMARS strikes in the near future!

Something about "fooled again trump" being allowed to take Venezuela and Greenland in exchange for Ukraine decided in alaska by putin the later ensuring NATO breakup.

Apparently this was mooted to trump by putin in 2019 but stopped by his more competent advisers at that time.

The window to do anything at all is narrowing. Russia has sent out naval vessels including subs to meet Bella 1/Marinera.

Apparently, there was a failed attempt by the US coast guard to board the ship in December, before it changed name and flag. The ship didn't slow down and even did a 180 to avoid being boarded. Not having the necessary specialised equipment to board a moving ship it was let leave. The ship came from Iran originally (not carrying oil it is assumed due to how high it is out of the water). So what was it carrying?

Meanwhile another 4 or 5 ships switched their flags to Russia hoping that'll deter US interference.
