Ancestry DNA

Quick question please , I have a relation in the USA who has done our family tree and it seems we are long lost relations , she sent me a snapshot of the ancestry tree. However I would like to do the test to confirm but all the subscriptions are overwhelming to get my head around.

Do I pay the €96 to confirm we are related ? Do I also get some access to review the family trees or do I need a yearly subscription to do this , I’m Irish and in Ireland .

    Appreciate any help !

There are 'offers' regularly for just the DNA kit and it can be down to 59 euro. But they get you on the subscriptions. You can just pay for one month but be careful the sub does not roll over so unsubscribe or remove your credit card details within the time or even on day one as the month will still 'work'. The person who has contacted you will have to give you permission to view their tree if it is 'private'.

    Excellent advice from @cobham

How distant is the proposed connection?

If you are further out than second cousins, then you may no longer have a genetic match, even if the paperwork lines up. We always match DNA with relatives who are second cousins or closer. We lose about 10% of third cousins but 50% of 4th cousins.

Thank you yes I believe she started the tree and that my great great great grand father is related to her great great great grandfather ! Do you think there is any point in me doing the Ancestry dna in this case ? Many thanks

That means the relationship could be very distant. It sounds like she has more to gain than you - i.e. if you test and there's a match, it'll likely be at a low level, which she might take as confirmation, but small matches can be unreliable.

If you are interested in learning more about your family history generally, then it is worth your while, but if cost is an issue, hold off until there's a deal going. If you follow Ancestry.co.uk on social media, they'll let you know about upcoming discounts. You will still need to use traditional research to understand DNA matches. Also remember that taking a DNA test can reveal previously unknown and/or unwelcome news.

I agree with the comments above. If you decide to test, I suggest Ancestry as it has the biggest database. If she has tested with another company both of you can upload to Gedmatch which is a DNA comparison site.

As you have not taken a DNA test, she most likely found/identified you via an on-line tree put up by a shared close relative who has already tested. So, the proof is already there; why bother testing unless you want to start genealogy as a new hobby?

To find you any other way the numbers and obstacles are very big. GDPR / convention blocks most records at 100 yrs for birth, 75yrs marriage and 50 yrs death - your new cousin is your 4th cousin so related about 120 years ago. Depending on the studies used, you have about 1,200 fourth cousins of which about 500 are ‘findable’. (ISOGG says 940 and 432.)

I have dozens of fourth cousins/third cousins once removed, etc., but have been able to identify very few beyond knowing which line of the family they are from (using ‘shared matches’).

Has she got your parents and grandparents correct? How did she identify you?

She started researching back in 2012 and found her relations buried to my relations at the same graveyard to my knowledge there is nobody yet genetically matched which I why I was going to see on ancestry dna

looks like some offers on this weekend , I think I’ll for for the ancestry kit and 3 month membership ,

Yes, the £55 is the one to buy. Traits are a gimmick and their results either incorrect or vague/inconclusive.

I got the kit with 3 mths sub last year. The subscription starts when you register the kit so just before you post it off. It will take 6 to 8 weeks to process so that will eat into your sub. In my case they rejected my kit and sent a replacement but by this time there was no value to posting in new kit as sub time would be up by time new one processed. The advice for doing a saliva sample is to have freshly washed teeth and maybe chew the inside of gums a bit to give best result.

I'd have contacted them looking for an extension to the sub given the delay in dealing with the test.

It's rare for the results to take longer than a month these days.

I'm waiting for one to be delivered - apparently DHL have tried to deliver twice but I was home all day and no missed calls or cards. Typical.

Im trying to understand Ancestry's "ThruLines"

So there is a person on Ancestry who puts all people on Griffiths Valuation as sons of their townland in his family tree...

My 3rd great grandfather Hugh Maye is from a townland where Ancestry's thrulines gives me lots of 4th, 4th once removed and 5th cousins through my 3x Great Grandfather between9cm and 13cm, so quite ar out. Given that there are many different surnames I assume its on maternal lie rather than paternal. Unless Pat Mustard was their milkman :)

I'm wondering how accurate the ThruLines are? Are these people related to me through my 3x Great Grandfather Hugh Maye? The reason I ask is because I don't think Hugh Maye was born in this townland, I think he moved into his wife's home place. I think its quite possible that they are related through his wife, but I've been unable to identify her.

I obviously have some DNA relationship with these people who are 4th/5th cousins but is the family tree with the townland as the father of of these people from Griffiths Valuation skewing Ancestry's algorithms or AI?

Thrulines rely on info from other people. If someone has decided your gang came from Timbuktu (without sources) and other relatives have slavishly copied them, then ancestry starts gaslighting you into thinking your research is wrong.

Thanks spurious, I was thinking it wouldn't be too advanced on DNA analysis

+1 on Spurious' post. The Thrulines tool is marketing hype, not science: its hint 'selection 'is based on matches with names/dates in other trees, not on DNA input. The customer must compare the isuggested 'match' with a known DNA match to see if it could potentially be correct. Ancestry in explaining this has been less than clear (why spoil a sales pitch?).

Thrulines has IMO been a major contributor to the downward spiral to which Ancestry is succumbing. Their ‘tree’ database is now so corrupted (due to idiots seizing on Thrulines suggestions) that it is more diseased than a plague-stricken fever hospital. The equivalent from MyHeritage is not much better.

I think it needs evaluation just like any other hint. Each step on each tree.

The MH equivalent is much worse! Just seems to suggest connections based on people being born the same year with a vaguely similar name.

There is a problem with a lot of family trees on it. Far too many people copying trees without checking sources or research.

I agree with Pinky. Check, check, check. Yes a lot is useless, but there there is also “gold in them thar hills”. And on occasion, not often, I have found it.

Has anyone been able to use the below offer recently? I've tried a couple of different browsers, logged out etc but it's giving me the 'There seems to be a problem with your order. Please try again later or contact Member Services' error. I can contact them next week but if someone knows of a workaround in the meantime I'm all ears.

Has your previous subscription ended? It only works when you haven't got a current one. Admittedly, I haven't tried it in a while.

Ended a couple of years ago I think. Although I remember being able to use this link more than once in the past.

I was kindly steered to it a couple of weeks ago by Spurious. My sub has lapsed for a month or so. It took a couple of attempts but I got there eventually - global for under £100

Do you remember if you did anything different in particular to avail of the offer? I've tried clearing the cache, using a different laptop with a different IP address…still no joy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 868 ✭✭✭Mick Tator

No, I was fully logged out of Ancestry, I did have to try a few times and sorry, don't recall what exact route I took.

Using PayPal instead of my credit card did the trick in the end, thanks.
