I heard Cian McCormack filling on the news at one. I find it amazing that he's working as an on air newscaster or reporter - his voice is deadly boring to listen to!

Cannot disagree with you there Arghus…..never speeds up the tempo of his delivery.

He is constantly fumbling over words today... at least it has stopped me from nodding off.

I imagine Cian seeing this post, and will be on-air tomorrow sounding like this…

Two hours of Oliver Callum is too much.

    Suggestion

Reduce Oliver Callums programme by 30 minutes, thus ending at 12.30.

Extend Darragh McCullogh’s programme to 11.30.

Broadcast a new music programe with an Irish flavour from 12.30 to 13.00. Only feature Irish artists and showbands and other recordings with an Irish theme. Then we can look forward to some Irish stew.

The Forum on Spirituality has been closed for years. Please bring it back, there are lots of Spiritual people in Ireland and elsewhere.

Oliver Callum doesn't get any hours on Radio 1, they don't have a presenter called Oliver Callum. Oliver Callan however...

Ah if only tomorrow Ronan could be on for RTÉ big Roundy Birthday tomorrow!

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

”Feedback overwhelmingly positive and everyone has hit the ground running”. All positive from Patricia on the News at One. Arena presenter to be named in the next few weeks.

Serious radio aficionados like myself can only listen on in horror as Monahan drags RTE1 further into the realms of mediocrity and crass output.

Vapid content, vacuous subject matter, overlong discussions on trivial subject matter as the premier radio station sinks further and further into morass of what I refer to as 'Call in and let us know' programme content.

In other words 'bottom of the barrel stuff' with convoluted feedback as to how acceptable this content is with listeners.

There are several so called' new programmes' I couldn't be bothered to listen to.

You're unlikely to ever get completely positive feedback. It's like when politician's say they heard nothing at the door about "this issue" during the campaign … in other words … "I've be told to play down "this issue" but its been every second door".

RTE Radio 1 should go back to what it was good at up until 20 years ago - having a wider variety of shorter interesting programmes throughout the day and evening. Moving "Arena" to 6pm or even earlier would be a start. Monahan is trying to turn Radio 1 into Newstalk and that will backfire on her in time.

You can’t have it both ways - Rte to be more self sufficient and do more niche stuff in prime time. If it needs to be more cost efficient it needs longer programmes needing less production staff overall and more advertising friendly

You should become an aficionado of something you like. The radio is causing you too much distress.

Well, hound, in the slab driving down the country and just gave Callan the big choke when I heard who his next guest was. Nuala Carey.

I am not sure about this TBH.

Cost efficiency has little to with audience attainment or niche public service broadcasting.

RTÉ has no niche programming in prime time Radio 1 but it is a public service broadcaster.

It has a large budget for programming that is done more cost effectively by independent broadcaster.

I'd argue that RTÉ can't have it both ways, fail to be cost efficient and expect public funding for "popular" programming alone.

RTÉ needs to find a balance, something it has failed to do.

yes I suppose if they agree a cost per hour of output then the cost to deliver should be the same regardless. But will arts programmes deliver as well as general chat and news discussions.

After6pm it probably doesn’t matter as the audience drops like a stone at 6pm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,743 ✭✭✭RoTelly

It's up to RTÉ to support those show. I think they 15 minute Arts Show after the 1pm news was a much better way of bring the arts to a wider audience, though the hour long Arena is good but as you say audiences have moved on. I don't really see how Inside Sport will do at 6 compare to an earlier start for Arena. By "hammocking" Arena between Drivetime and Inside Sport there is a possibility you will keep audiences for Arena.

or you develop strong Public Service stories on your prime time shows. e.g. in fairness to Derek Mooney he was able to have a "mooney goes wild" episode of the Mooney Show each week.

Is the Louise Duffy any different in format, or is it just the time?

Personally don’t want more than a 5-10 minute sports update in general news programming. Most of these look forward and look back shows are just padding with experts who are wrong 50% of the time!

A few BBC radio 4 style programmes wouldn’t go a miss from 7-8pm - things like More or Less or decent science coverage. And a few decent comedy shows at 6.30pm ?

Radio 4 also chooses the 7:15 to 8pm slot for their Arts shows. Currently Front Row Monday-Thursday, and Screenshot on Fridays. After their soap opera at 7pm, which should deliver a good follow on audience.

Brian Jennings is one of the finest newsreaders ever - he has the class of BBC Radio 4..

I hope he has not retired - he is missed on Morning Ireland.
