Amorim genuinely has a terrible record overall. If this was his first season, his record would probably be encouraging (but last season is still relevant) while also giving some pause/caution about how far he will go. Having to rely on some of the players within this squad was always a problem but it was also a problem when he refused to compromise his ideals with players that were not suited to them.

Last season had all the appearances of a coach/manager and club working together and accepting short term pain as they took steps to get the right team and squad together. Now it appears the support, with players, and belief in that system have changed.

Are the club wrong to say to him that, as things have not happened as quickly as they originally intended that he needs to find a way to get through this season? No, but they are wrong if they have, until recently given him the impression he was right to fire ahead with implementing what he wants and that they will get him the players to do it. They should always have been working with him and having a back up, alternative to their shared ideal that they both could work with.

Unlike some of the other managers, there is something likable and genuine about Amorim that makes me want to see him do well and I get it hard to blame him many of the problems. It is worlds away from (for example) ten hag signing so many players he knew or his agent knew.

Overall we may be seeing the problem with jumping from Manager having a heavy say to the implementation of a technical/director of football structures where the are deciding on the players that are needed. It is going to take time to get that right too. Another serious bump in the road ahead for the club.

I think even Amorim's biggest fans have some doubts about him at this stage but there's one aspect that I've never really doubted him... There's not many out there better than him when it comes to PR.

He probably knows that the brains trust have backed him so much that he is safe until the end of the season at a minimum, and I think this press conference is just him making sure they back him in January.

Throwing in 'Gary Neville' to the mix is top drawer. If they do anything to him in the short term, it will look like they are basing their decisions on MNF.

If he could bring his press conference form onto the pitch, we'd be flying.

If the end is near now. And we go back to a more traditional 433. Who are the winners and losers? Is there a way back for Rashford given we pretty much sold all our out and out wingers?

Still think 2xCBs, 2/3xCM (depending on Bruno) and 1/2x ST + maybe a winger are the bare minimum. LB looks light too.

Dorgu probably the most obvious loser. Will be gone regardless I’d say. Amad probably loses his guaranteed starting spot to Mbuemo. Cunha a more natural 10 but think he’s probably fine LW. Shaw doesn’t seem to have the engine to be a true LB anymore

    Mainoo the most obvious winner.

    Lammens

Dalot/ New RB De Ligt Heaven/New CB New LB

    New CDM Mainoo

    Bruno

    Mbuemo new ST Cunha

You'd never know unless you actually put a bit of effort into signing him rather than shrugging the shoulders and saying Levy won't sell. One year left in his contract Spurs haven't got much say if the club put serious effort into the bid and he was tempted.

But that's the past so no point really going into much details about something like that. But still shows the shocking transfer decisions when you see how much has been spent on strikers in the last few years and all of them combined have only scored 21 league goals.

    No to Rashford.

No, no, no, no, no. Under any circumstances and any manager.

It would be far from pointless, if the club got themselves a decent manager/interim. 5th will probably do again for a place in The Champion's League. And with the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs etc dropping points left right and centre, that is very achievable.

A new manager will not persist with Bruno at CM because he is so much better further up, which leaves a massive gap in CM

How some kind of squad level CM can't bee recruited on loan this window is crazy

    Fantastic. Simply fantastic.

Add this to the troubles they’ve had running Nice and Lausanne, and you wouldn’t be to confident in INEOS managing things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,250 ✭✭✭✭Sand

Yup. United have played bottom half opposition 11 times this season and dropped points in 8 of those games, taking only 16 points total. There hasn't been any massive drop off in results since Afcon. The recent Leeds and Wolves results were just more of what was being delivered when more players were available.

I’ve always disliked him as a player even at his ‘peak’. But he’s one of the few players in United squad who has been central to the plans of every United manager since Ferguson. Our individual opinions on him aren’t really relevant. More interested in if his return is possible

I really hope he doesn’t come back, but I don’t think you cant rule out that our next manager rates him as a player. Not sure if the relationship with the club (beyond Amorim) is so broken that they’d veto his return.

The only real positive that Amorim has had is clearing out the wasters.

Garnacho sold. Sancho loaned til his contract ends. Rashford loaned. Onana loaned.

If we start to go backwards and let them return, we really have wasted 18 months.

The manager comment is purely related to the ongoing media briefings by someone close to Wilcox about the need for tactical changes. I don't believe for one second it's to do with having a veto on signings or anything like that. Wilcox's job is to empower the manager through signings and getting the off field environment right. Right now, it's clear that Wilcox has been asleep at the wheel and there has been really poor squad planning by him. He knew we were going to missing both of our right side attackers and that the midfield needed strengthening yet he was trying to by a left winger.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

i'd like if he resigned without a payout and associated NDA. air all the dirty laundry.

Why would Wilcox need to be sacked? This isn't me defending Wilcox saying he's up to the job but when Amorim was signed the chain of power was Berrera - Brailsford- Ashworth - then you had Wilcox working under Ashworth.

At that point Wilcox would have had the least amount of influence of the brains trust. Now with Ashworth sacked and Brailsford moved on who would have played a big role in getting Ashworth it's himself and Berrera.

3atb or 4atb might have had nothing to do with why Amorim was signed. Glasner plays 3atb but has said a system is only as good as the players you have. Switched before from a 3atb to 4atb when it wasn't working but the team still played to the same philosophy and style as they would have with 3atb.

Maybe Wilcox now since he's the DOF and has more influence is asking Amorim about changing some stuff until the recruitment can get more players in to play. INEOS definitely should have looked at DOFs and left Wilcox as the sporting/technical director

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,339 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I'm sure they checked, like City with Rice, once it was obvious it wasn't happening they moved on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,669 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I think a big issue has been too many chiefs not enough Indians. Especially aiming towards your last paragraph talking about moving from manager to head coach style set up.

With DOFs, sporting directors, and technical directors. Won't include Berrara as he's probably top dog and you'll always need a chief executive. But at one stage you had four lads all given their say about things. That's now cut to two so hopefully there's some improvement.

Are the club wrong to say to him that, as things have not happened as quickly as they originally intended that he needs to find a way to get through this season?

I'd say this is a big part of things. If Big Jim starts wielding an axe again to background staff it's Wilcox who'll likely get the chop not Berrara. As DOF I'd say Wilcox and Amorim are clashing because he's been asked is there any chance of changing a bit to suit what personal they have until more players can be got and Amorim doesn't.

So basically 5 new signings and then the next manager might make a fist of it?

You're kind of admitting that the squad isn't good enough as it is but want a new manager to get the best out of a completely new team. You may be right but at a minimum I'd like to see Amorim given this season and players this transfer window to make a go of it.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,552 ✭✭✭CantGetNoSleep

I don't disagree but surely then the so-called brains trust all need to go too? They have spent over 400m and still need half a new team?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,918 ✭✭✭DataDude

I think the squad is awful. And on balance I’m probably marginally Amorim in at this stage due to seeing some progress (I’d have sacked him last year).

But he’s just come out publicly. Attacked his boss and said he’s not renewing his contract in 18 months. He did some weird ‘I can’t speak but you’re very smart’ yday so it’s not just one emotional outburst.

My views aside. I can’t see how he survives this fight with Wilcox.

Nothing that Ineos have done so far suggests that they are any better than the Glazers. Utter spoofers

Perhaps, but the club was an absolute shambles prior to INEOS. There are no descriptors for the state of the team when ETH left. We basically had 1 or 2 useable players.
In this day, to take a club from essentially zero except some horrendous contract like Casemiros, sanchos, rashfords to top level. It’s €1bn+ easily and multiple years.

They’ll say last summer was a first move in the right direction. Whether it is or not is up to opinion.

ashworth left about 2 weeks after amorim was appointed. he clearly disagreed with the appointment.

brailsford would have had no input in the appointment of a manger (i hope).

maybe berrada in fairness but he is prob too high to be sacked.

Your last point got me thinking. Since we brought in new keeper it's 2 defeats in 14. Thats pretty decent. Drawn too many though and against likes of Wolves kinda hinders the good bits somewhat.

I think we have improved but with no European football I would have expected to be least competive, which we are.

After Wolves game I was not bothered if Amorim got his p45.

But performances like today and against Villa I see progress.

Im a bit all over the shop about him if truth be told. One part I want him stay, another feels he just not doing enough.

2 things that the gaffer has failed in.

    1. Consistency. Only once he has managed to win back to back. That's simply not going cut it.

    2. His unwillingness to change formation or be more aggressive especially when chasing.

I don't talk too much about formations cause at times it can be different formation depending how set up at certain points, but Amorim needs change it up much more when things are not going right.

Tactically it seems he never has a Plan B or C. Never seen him turn it around too many times.

    EVENFLOW

He hasn't attacked anyone, he's basically told the press that he picks the team and sets the tactics while also saying he would like some more support. There was nothing wrong with what he said at all.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,669 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

That would have been Berrara and likely Brailsford who was DOF when Amorim was appointed. At that stage Wilcox was working under Ashworth. Brailsford is then gone a few months after Ashworth is sacked who he's good friends with. I'd assume Berrara more than Brailsford pushed the it's now or never ultimatum

Wilcox might eventually be a decent DOF but 12 months before he got the DOF gig he was hired to work under Ashworth who was hired to work under Brailsford who all report to Berrara.

That's too big of step for someone to jump at a club like United and big questions will need to be asked of Berrara imo. More than anyone as surely he's the one that okayed Wilcox as DOF and he was reported as playing a big role in signing Yoro and supposedly called it his personal project. So has a big part in recruitment.

He also never said he wasn’t renewing his contract, he basically said he’s got 18 months left on his contract and then it’s up to the club.

I doubt anyone will be signed. If a new manager comes in I'd assume it's someone who'll play 4-3-3 even if it's Glasner. So you've then got Bruno, Mainoo, Casemiro in the 3 rather than playing with a two. Though that still leaves you sort because Ugarte is the only other player. Can we really include Mount anymore at this stage.

Maybe Martinez gets used as a 6 but with him being a CB he could end up being too defence and drawn too close to defence. Plus with his ball playing ability you'd rather him as a CB. Only midfielder being talked about as a signing is Cristian Orozco who can't sign for the club until he's 18 in the summer.

Listening to the so called pundits on Sky would drive you wrong and it’s exactly what I was posting about earlier- you have Paul Merson saying Amorim has publicly stated he’s quitting in 18 months so his position is untenable…….except he didn’t Paul.

Then you have that d*pe Kris Boyd saying if the Man united manager can’t handle what Gary Neville and the pundits are saying about him he’s in the wrong job…….He didn’t say that either Kris…. He actually said if WILCOX can’t handle what the Gary Neville’s have to say then the club needs to change. He has always said Neville, Keane and Scholes are entitled to their opinions.

Fair play to Sky, they’re very consistent when it comes to Manchester United and never letting the truth get in the way of a good story.

He has the club in sixth, only Arsenal and City have scored more. They've lost one fewer games than Liverpool and one more than City and Villa. All without a fit for purpose midfield and, apparently, the worst manager in living memory. But yeah, bin him off and start again. That'll work out fine.
