We can't afford to miss out on Europe because didn't sort out the midfield issue.

Yeah I understand where your coming from. The concern you'd have is that the smaller squad was a choice, it was deliberate due to the lack of Europe and knowing we would be losing players to afcon. If all this was factored in you could see them choosing not to spend money this window, especially as we are only 3 pints off 4th, level on points with 5th, they may see it as a sense of sure we will be grand - would be a mistake imo too. We have a chance to properly cement European football and challenge for CL too if we strengthen. Here's hoping something is workable and that they see there's an opportunity here to jump ahead a season.

Garner, Angel Gomes, En-Nesyri. Fletcher playing more minutes. That would be a cheap-ish solution to a lot of problems.

If we don't do anything in January it's unforgivable. Even a random loan move for the MF. Even for the finances, a cheap loan move could be the difference for us getting a European spot. If the scouts can't identify one player that could improve our non existent MF then it's very worrying. That's even if they want to go all out in the summer but I can already see us failing in the summer with the world cup and then they blame no value again.

Even if Amorim wants to persist with Casemiro and Bruno as a midfield 2, I don't see how it hurts the team to have a Sabitzer type option there to come in when the inevitable injury or suspension happens?

Is such a loan option going to do any harm? Might freeze Mainoo out I suppose.

I don't want to see a loan move, they never work out. Go and find a bloody player to buy that they've done their homework on. Relying on 2/3 top targets and having nothing in reserve would be crazy.

If United owe vast sums in transfer fees (in August it was said to be over 170 million Sterling by March 2026) are they going to buy players in January? Probably not. Well unless it is bringing forward something they would have done in the summer and they can do something to clear funds like a loan or two out with a guaranteed sale to come.

Their summer work is also likely to be heavily influenced by what happens with Hojlund and Rashford.

In the short term a loan is a good option if it makes financial sense and a suitable player is available. Is a player that will be affordable and of good quality realistic or a unicorn? Could Mainoo not play more. If a new player is just another Ugarte then they may as well use Ugarte more too or if it is another Zirkzee then they may as well use Zirkzee more often.

Edit: the squad has proven to be short on options and I would love to see it bolstered but I am not seeing how it is likely.

Napoli have said they're definitely taking Hojlund.

Rashford will 100% be an issue though. And don't forget a certain useless shyte of a keeper who could come crawling back from Turkey expecting a pay rise...

That said they apparently want to sign him permanently, but they're short on funds. Antony saga part II coming up.

James Garner would be a great signing. Versatile and would I believe be a homegrown player. We should be all over him as he would be a key squad member.

and free in the summer - a market we need to start using.

villa with 2 free transfers in their CM today and cruising.

I think it would be a mistake. Never go back. He's a good player at Everton but he's playing regularly which I don't think he is good enough to do at a top 4 club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,397 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

Normally I would agree about never going back, but Garner had a grand total of 9 mins PL football for United when he was a kid, its not quite the same as a Depay or Hojlund, somebody who fully had their shot and didn't take it.

He did what the vast majority of players used to do, went to a smaller club to get minutes and develop, now he is at the point where he could easily step up to the next level. Some of the PL's greatest players did that, Salah for example.

Young, PL proven, likely to be cheap, in a position that desperately needs reinforcement. I don't think you ignore him just because he used to be a youth player here, does he improve the squad now should be the only question.

and they were probably right :-D

Sorry for quoting a 13 month old msg

Going into the Leeds game we're 4 points ahead of 14th Newcastle, without Europe this season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,801 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

I mean its not like he was really here to begin with. He came through the ranks but never had an actual senior season. He is radically different to the kid that left.

    Wolves are class lads.... 3 - 0! 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,728 ✭✭✭caviardreams

Not wanting to put a gloss on Tuesday's draw but Wolves were genuinely unlucky not to get something from the arsenal, liverpool and villa games imo. Rob Edwards has them better organised and has injected some drive/desire despite what must be a situation that it is very easy to just give up on as it seems a hopeless cause. We still should have won though.

I'm assuming you meant Adam Wharton or Elliot Anderson. Can definitely do long term business in January it just comes down to money. English clubs will already want massive money before then adding any January tax to the situation. Once your top two or three players are unavailable to buy you're just spending money for the sake of spending it and the club are likely on a sell to buy this month to keep some funds free to start spending ASAP come the summer.

There's a performance based option in his contract so it might yet get extended for 12months. I can't see him coming here to sit on the bench unless we throw some money at him. He's a starter for Everton and it might lead to an England call up.

We all know what the team is going into tomorrow and it’s an atmosphere like no other in the PL.

If we play like we did v Wolves, we’ll be beaten. This can be the shot in the arm we require to get on and get our teeth into a 4th place finish.

Let the second half of the league get off to a great start and send the Leeds fans home crying.

    Cant wait

Could we not even get a loan player in to bolster numbers this window… we never seem to use loans well

I dread to think what shape we will be in if the afcon lads get injured

Anyone have any thoughts on Fernandes from West Ham who would surely be available cheap if west ham go down. Might be a decent squad option and seems to have good athleticism

Amorim has said before that the club weren't looking at short term targets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,627 ✭✭✭FrankN1

It's almost guaranteed we will lose heavily tomorrow. Can't see us getting anything with so many players out. 3.1 to Leeds unfortunately.

Looks like a man only a few weeks from the end - fair point from the journalist. Usually doesn’t shy away from talk.

2nd part of amorim's press conference. he looks tired.

does suggest on the 2nd question that he hasnt been as supported by the brains trust as maybe they promised.

It would have to be very cheap for me. Like £25m or less. Because I don't think he has another level to go to. He is a decent PL midfielder but don't think he improves our first XI to be honest.

Who thinks he would improve our first XI, and if so, how?

Sick of signing squad players for £40m+.

That's what I thought those comments meant at the time as well, so that makes me very smart too 😇
