There's legal precedent for this unfortunately, the US used the same tactic to take out Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega in the 1980s. The Noriega case was somewhat different insofar as the US had jurisdiction over the Panama Canal Zone, but the basic line off arguing, and the indictment, followed the same line that the Trump administration is using now.

Having said that, today's action in Venezuela is far worse in my eyes, and not just because it shows just how little Trump cares about anything or anyone. From what I can see, it also falls short from the point of regime change. Yes, the US took down Maduro, but the rest of the regime is still in place. The strikes that the US conducted seemed to be focused purely on taking out air defences and providing close air support to the special forces (Delta Force, apparently) strike teams sent in to get Maduro and his wife. There were, at least from what I can see, no strikes against Venezuela's other political leaders, the regime's internal security forces, or any other activities that would facilitate a toppling of the current regime.

Then again, what do I expect from a tangerine toddler that's incapable of thinking beyond his next cheeseburger? Long term planning?

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

He calls the shots. This could be devastating for Russian oil prices. Russian z blogger's are in crisis mode right now.

If the US get control of Venezuelan oil they can push Russia even further out of the market. China will be happy as long as they've access to the oil which I'm pretty sure the US won't have an issue with. It's a bit of a coincidence the Chinese were meeting with him as this happened.

Yes, indeed he does (sadly for all of us). I don't think this is good, regardless.

The Russian govt. comments on it so far have been careful, and not as harshly critical of the US, as one might have expected in the past.

Keeping Trump and the GOP "on side" with their pro-Russian policy towards Europe and Ukraine is far more critical and the higher goal. Russia's allies elsewhere will be left twist in the wind if needed.

Saw that already with Iran IMO - hardly a peep when it was attacked by Israel with US connivance, and then bombed by Trump. So long and thanks for all the Shaheds!

Sky said analysts believe Maduro lost the 2024 elections in a landslide. So in that context, maybe the public support his removal. But I also suspect they want the oil used primarily for the benefit of their country, not for other ones.

Venezuela is a member of OPEC so a client president would also be a US toehold within OPEC if its members recognised it.

Why not both? Selling their oil abroad without Sanctions can benefit the country. Especially if it's ran by an elected government and not a dictator.

Trump practically saying the US will run Venezuela and…. The oil. It’s all quite obvious they didn’t give a **** about the drugs. This is all about oil.

America doesn’t exactly have the best track record at regime change. Can you imagine a country pulling the same stunt off in Washington? There’d be hell.

I am delighted to be proven wrong so quickly there. That’s a serious missile. Apart from the manpower situation, things seem to be getting better for Ukraine in some ways. As Russia’s ability to power its cities and army are degraded, General Winter no longer looks like such a reliable ally.

Most importantly, the missile is built around the reality that Russia’s strongest defensive tool is no longer air defense alone, but layered GPS jamming, and Narwhal is explicitly designed to keep flying when satellite navigation is degraded or denied.

Ukraine and the US Agree on Key Military Document.A high-level meeting is underway in Kyiv with Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, the General Staff, and European partners.Chief of the General Staff Andriy Gnatov confirmed that a military document with four sections and four appendices has been agreed upon with the US. It covers: Support and modernization of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Military supplies and restoration. Monitoring compliance with agreements. Responses to any violations. One section also addresses the “Coalition of the Willing” and possible foreign contingents. This is part of a broader set of agreements, including security guarantees and a peace plan with 20 points, plus a long-term vision for Ukraine’s recovery and development until 2040.

As I see it Maduro is a criminal* that was extradited to the U.S. The means were a bit novel but sure something had to be done, lol.

*and not the president as he stole the election. Likewise with Putin, he is not the president of Russia.

It looks like history is starting up again.

It's been a bizarre 24 hours and start to a new year. Reminds me of how 2020 started. Next the Kerch bridge will be hit or something.

Zelenskyy on Venezuela: If this is possible with dictators, the United States knows what to do next

    😆

    Another amazing one liner.

Great news and hard earned too. How on earth have Ukrainians from Zelensky down managed to control themselves as much as they have when dealing with the Trump administration? Biden and Co. were bad enough but there must be the danger of green slime shooting from the heads of any Ukrainian sent to talk to them. If they’d sent me there would have been a hands-on Usyk mode meltdown months ago but somehow they have managed to keep a lid on things until the Russians revealed yet again a complete lack of interest in peace. Of course, if Ukraine had sent Usyk or either of the Klitschkos they would have behaved perfectly too. Incredible fortitude as usual. What a country.

Update on Pokrovsk. Russia is trying to outflank the city on the northwest by taking Hryshyne.

Russia is involved in the military coup regime in Madagascar. Russia building a network of client states in central and western Africa, but this one is a large island east of Africa. Previously, pro-Russia military coups happened in Burkina Faso, CAR, Niger and Chad. Russia is particularly involved in resource-rich countries. CNN has reported over the years about Russian front-companies like Alrosa and its involvement in front companies in Sudan. AlRosa sells 30% of the worlds diamonds.

Diamville SAU is a Russia-linked diamond and gold trading company based in the Central African Republic, reportedly affiliated with the Russian Wagner Group (a private military organization). The U.S. Treasury placed Alrosa on its sanctions list in April 2022, designating it under its Russia sanctions regime and cutting it off from U.S. financial dealings.

The European Union added Alrosa and its CEO to its sanctions blacklist as part of broader bans on Russian diamonds and jewelry in 2024. Belgium resisted diamonds sanctions for 2 years.

In CAR, Russia effectively controls that countries diamond sector.

Regarding the coup regime in Chad, that country was an important source of uranium imports for France (about 12% of imports).

Brent Crude now at $60.75, compared to $137 when the war started. It's fallen about $25 in the past year. Helps explain why Putin is considering sending reservists to Ukraine, as they can no longer afford the lavish payments to contracted soldiers.

Historically, reservists tend to be older (40s-50s according to The Moscow Times, and English language newspaper banned by Putin) and less experienced.

On 10 July 2024, Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office officially designated The Moscow Times as an “undesirable organization” under Russian law. That means the outlet is effectively banned from operating inside Russia — Russian citizens or residents who work for, cooperate with, share, or donate to it risk criminal penalties, including potential prison time.

Czech opposition seeks to oust far-right speaker over anti-Ukraine rant

In a fiery New Year’s address posted on X, Tomio Okamura, leader of the anti-immigration Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party, sharply criticized military support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s nearly four-year invasion.

“You cannot use money that belongs to Czech pensioners, citizens with disabilities, and families with children to buy weapons and send them to wage a completely senseless war,” Okamura said.

    ………………….

Following his remarks, which were sharply criticized by Ukrainian officials, Czech opposition parties announced on Friday that they would seek Okamura’s removal from the post of parliamentary speaker, arguing that his statements have tarnished the country’s international standing.

Leaders from five opposition groups, including the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), Mayors and Independents (STAN), Pirates, Christian Democrats (KDU-ČSL) and TOP 09, said they would begin collecting signatures next week to trigger a parliamentary vote on Okamura’s dismissal.

    Good news.

Also China was the biggest customer for Venezuelan oil.

The Military Show has a report on success of Ukrainian Leopard tanks against the Russians in Novopavlivka area in Dnipropetrovsk region. Russia had used the cover of fog a few weeks ago to advance.

Reports Ukraine has captured a T90-AK tank. Unusually the standard Essa gunner’s thermal sight has been retained. Another notable detail is that the front right roller is not original but sourced from a T-72A/T-72M1 (eight-spoke).

Only 2 of them have been captured during the war.

I assume theres not much to stop chinese companies openly buying Venezuelan oil now , i mean with the yanks in charge all sanctions will be lifted , and probably production increased fairly quickly,

And even if the chinese dont buy the Venezuelan oil , someone else will - leaving other oil available for the chinese..

Ya, santy will deliver them next year. Its more likely that Trump sends them back to Putin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,254 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

I don't think USA oil companies would have any issue selling it to the Chinese. They're a huge customer. What it will do is make China less reliant on Russian oil. They'll be asking even deeper discounts to take it off Putin.

With this operation over swiftly Americans might launch an attack on Iran in conjunction with Israel. Iranian long range missile stockpiles won't have recovered, their air defence is in ruins and there's currently civilian unrest all over the country. If they were ever going to go in it'll be soon.

If they calculate Iran will rebuild their nuclear efforts deeper underground out of bunker buster range they'll probably go for it.

I heard it will take a huge amount of investment to increase Venezuelan oil production and even that the price of oil is so low that investment may not be forthcoming (the uncertainty adding to the difficulty of attracting the investment )

How are the Yanks in charge -just because they say they are?

Are the Venezuelans going to roll over just in order to be able to sell oil ?

Maybe Trump has it in mind to nationalise the oil companies in America and force them to invest in Venezuela?
