I picked up a few fillets end of last week in Aldi and while the cost has definitely jumped I was able to find 4 really decent ones that went down a treat.

Right so that said, this was actually a very thin steak rolled to look like a thicker steak.🤨

Seems even James Whelans are cutting corners.

what weight? For me, it's impossible to judge a bargain without the weight per kilo!

It was two weeks ago. Pretty sure they weigh zero now.

Not sure theres a bigger con at the moment than a cowboy steak

I've had some lovely ones… I like ribeye, if you can pick out a good one you can get a good ribeye with the discount cheaper than regular price on a ribeye. And there's something about beef off the bone from a BBQ.

But yeah, there can be some poor value ones out there too.

Im a big fan of the taste, love a ribeye, but not a fan of paying an extra 15-30% because of the weight of the bone

That's where the 33% off comes in :)
Plus the cowboys, in Supervalu at least, before the discount have an RRP of €26 per kg versus €33 per kg for ribeye.

    The World steak challenge winner is available in Lidl. 32 day aged Angus. A video of it being cooked is embedded in this article;

Lovely hanger from James Whelans. And a bargain at €28 per KG

I suppose that's one of those pay to win awards, as there is not a chance that a striploin looking anything like the one from that video could win a serious prize.

    Looks very much like it.

Have to laugh at the video linked on the article above. Lad can barely swallow the steak

That video would put me off buying that steak!

he kept prodding and poking it with the fork, leave it alone

He's the "technical beef specialist" but looks like he's never cooked a steak before. I'm surprised Lidl didn't ask for the video to be taken down lol

Reminds me of the person Bord Bia was placing in a foreign market promoting beef, him getting the gig because of who he knew. They had to train him from scratch as he'd never cooked a steak in his life.

Iv'e taken the plunge and bought to sample for ye. Will report when they are eaten.

Had the Lidl fillet last night. Liffey meats. Decent at 17 quid for 2. Very tasty. Goes well with this sauce.

We ate ours last night too. Nice steak, but this one is from Dawn Meats. It was very lean with little or no marbling. This would lead me to question whether is was Angus or more likely mostly Limousin. As a farmer, I'd say any animal that has any bit of Angus in them might be registered by the farmer as that, having an eye on the factory bonus. Limousin and Angus crosses are black and almost identical looking.

Anyone tried the wild Irish venison steaks in Lidl, doesn’t state what the cut is. Bought a pack today just haven’t tried them yet.

Anyone with a bit of butchery knowledge ,

I occasionally get the lidl , " grilling steaks " , around 6 euro something for 2 , and if you cook them right theyre not bad - ( for a cheapo steak )

But I've zero idea what cut theyre actually from , at first i thought rump - but supermarket " sirloins " are rump ,

They look like a muscle cut from a bigger joint .. ( which again would make me think rump ) ,

Either way , quite nice cooked medium rare, and sliced across the grain to serve ..

Aldi Angus Rib Eye 28 Day, 8oz in Black box was a regular purchase for us. I.v found that since early Summer, aside from the price increase, the quality is definately not the same. As we work and live in the farming community, I would have no problem in paying the extra as farmers are getting a bit more for their animals, but dont treat consumers like fools.

I am on look out for some other place to buy it.

Agree Aldi steaks have gone way down. Find LIDL and Tesco much better. Still often get one dodgy one in the pack mind so you have to look through them. Like yourself, steak is a luxury purchase and many of us would rather 2-3 euro extra pack for the so called premium quality steaks and a better product

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,127 ✭✭✭Markcheese

I think theres a bit more checking of the packs , to get ones you'd like yourself , and even then .. haven't had the aldi steaks in a while so cant really comment on any drop in quality ..

Anyone tried this new Denver steak in Dunnes? It's suspiciously cheap...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭Snowcast

Haven't had Aldi/Lidl/Tesco steaks recently but did try these from Dunnes but wasn't impressed. They shrivelled up quite a bit.

For the odd time we have steak, we'll stick to the butchers because they are always top quality, and we can never complain about them. We like them quite thick, and the ones from Dunnes shvrilled up so they were quite thin and just not enjoyable.

If you like thin steaks, the ones from Dunnes might be for you, you'd probably enjoy them.
