we were away over Easter but today decent steak seems up everywhere. Our usual SuperValu aged striploin 16.49€ which is a 5.50 rise, dunnes Irish angus version looks to be up to 14.50, from €11 also, not as big a rise, but fillets in dunnes now 19.99.

Presume it’s market price pressure coming through, but that’s pretty steep now, slightly offset by using vouchers I guess. I’d not be surprised to see steaks not counting for vouchers soon.

I’m guessing butchers are similar too, have always found the slighter higher end supermarket ones very consistent compared to even good butchers.

M&S steaks have always been a bit average for the price but love their Irish angus burgers, they are taken out of the 3/12 deal now and 6.50€ for a pack of 4 instead, which is a big rise overall

Wow. 😲 Even my local butcher is cheaper than that. 😲

This bargain alert is for anyone living within driving distance of Ballyfermot in Dublin or Claregalway. Lidl have just opened two new supermarkets there and currently if you go in to the app and select your store to one of those two locations then in the coupons section you will see 4 x €10 off €50 vouchers to be used over the next 4 weeks.

That then coincides with them selling various different steaks starting this Thursday for Fathers Day.

    Heres what I'll be getting

    4 Sirloin steaks 650g €9, Sharing style Striploin 400g €9.49, Cowboy steak 400g €11, New York Striploin steak 284g €9, T-bone steak 400g €13.

That comes to €51.50 so with the €10 off €50 voucher it reduces it down to €41.50. Which given that steaks have been rocketing in price lately isnt bad at all.

@Muahahaha can you bump the thread when you see them in store e.g. the t-bone or new york striploin? Cheers.
I was in LIDL last friday and they just had the standard range.

Also, I assume the coupons only work in Ballyfermot & Claregalway?

They should all be in store from Thursday.

I dont know if the coupons would work in other Lidl locations. There was a time a few years back when you could be certain that they would work in other stores but I think since then they have changed the QR code so it only works in the store that it is assigned to.

FOMO sent me to the local LIDL, and yep the T-Bones and New York Striploins etc are in store. Well there are fewer now than before…

Some of the T-Bones bit small on the fillet side so pick carefully.
€12.99 for 400g so works out at €32.50 per kg.

Did you try use the 10 off 50?

Tesco Finest CIA sharing T-Bone Steak with a Peppercorn Sauce 570g - Tesco Groceries

I know it's sharing but I'd be surprised if anyone would pay €28 for this in the first place. A serious discount on the clubcard price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,185 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

No I didn't chance it, wasn't planning on spending that much so didn't faff about with LIDL PLUS settings - but of course I did spend more than €50 :(

Yeah crazy price without clubcard but €14 with clubcard would be better value than LIDL, but my experience with Tesco and these beef offers is they have very small stock. Maybe they'll prove me wrong! Shout if you see it.

anyone know what Lidl and Aldi do with their steaks when no one buys them within date, bin them? ( their fillet steaks are getting horrible by the day with usually only one steak per box being decent, the rest are terrible quality, full of fat and grizzle ime)

One end of my "fillet" steak from Lidl yesterday. And this is after rooting through 20 packs. This was the best.

    yep gone really poor quality

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭Enrico Palazzo

Earlier this week there were some magnificent pieces of fillet in my local Aldi and it was the medium quality line, but it had marbling matching the best fillets I have ever seen in any supermarket, so it's not all doom and gloom, just takes some luck and patience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,289 ✭✭✭geographica

Yeh takes a hell of a lot of luck and patience and given the price of them 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,781 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

they definitely seem to be selling lower grades of meat this last couple of years. Like you have to root through the entire box to find a normal price rib eye with good marbling as many have virtually none at all.

These are good in Dunnes, Angus hangar steaks - quick fry / sear for rare to medium rare. Otherwise they go chewy.

Better value on hanger steaks if theres a James Whelan butcher counter in store by the looks of things.

    Oh cool they're new.

Cheaper cuts defo the way forward at the mo. Paid 15 quid for 2 fairly small striploins in my local butcher. Problem is you never know how much its going to be until they weigh it.

I do like a Cowboy strak, but even at half price it is €28.30 per Kg.

Think I will settle for a few Sirloin steaks from SuperValu for €17.99 per Kg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,185 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Over the course of the week I picked up the one of the Tesco Cowboy steaks and also this flat iron from local supermarket at €18.99 per kg, will be BBQ'ing over the weekend.

Supervalu have 25% off rib eyes so that's €26.25 per kg.

Picked up some more of the cowboy steaks from Tesco as they are still on offer. On getting home the first batch I noticed significant weight differences - all greater than 320g but I'd managed to pick up a 390g also! This time around I wasn't as lucky … top tip - use the weighing scales in the veg section to help with your selection.

Problem is, you're paying for the bone and a lot of excess fat.

Disappointed by the price of steaks in Lidl, they were my go to, but its all gone up hugely in last few months. Best value for steaks out there these days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,185 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

I keep an eye on the Supervalu specials offers that update Thursdays.
But even they aren't as good, used to be 33% off now it's more like 25% off.

Aldi. Could be thicker, but won't complain with this marbling for €10.49.
