Irish passport holder living abroad. Considering a move, how do you stay connected?

    Hi all,

I’m an Irish citizen living abroad and still have close family in Dublin. I’ve thought seriously over the years about moving back, but with the housing situation and where I’m at in life now, it doesn’t feel especially practical. That said, I don’t feel disconnected from Ireland either. I plan to visit, bring my kids over, and spend more time there going forward. I suppose I’m trying to work out what “staying connected” looks like if a full relocation isn’t on the cards.
I’d be interested to hear from anyone else living abroad who’s felt caught between moving back and simply deepening the connection in other ways. Did you find a middle ground that worked for you?

I lived abroad for 4 years. I stayed connected by visiting home at least 1 or 2 times a year. My family were all getting older and were the main reason I came home. For me, the only problem was, while my salary there was very good for there, the money did not travel well so coming home for a trip was a big financial strain.

I wouldnt advise anyone to come home with Ireland in it's current state and 2 of my close friends have moved abroad in recent years.

I would say it's never been easier to stay in touch as it is now. When I was abroad, whatsapp had not been invented yet. Now you can do phone and video calls easily over wifi. As we learnt over covid, you can do a conference call with family members over Zoom and not just talk but do a table quiz or a boardgame remotely. I'd also encourage you to invite your family and friends to go visit you.
