Ioane is contracted until the end of the 26/27 season. He could be bought out etc but his younger child was just born a year ago - if I was him, I wouldn't want to leave ahead of schedule.

Yes, Gavin has been the plan for 13, and has done pretty well so far, but he is being transitioned from 12 and it may take some more time. In terms of defensive reads, Ioane's outhalf eyes should help him read an opposition's attack.

I think it's important that we commit to Frawley at 10 but Ioane has been so good with ball in hand that we should think about how he could be redeployed.

That was my thinking… Ulster players caused the penalty and then escalated it…

Bundee reacted by pushing someone on the ground and he said Connacht guilty…

Jackman talking again about Devine to Ulster or maybe France. When Connacht go on so much about grass roots to green shirts and developing their own home grown players it seems like madness to allow a situation to develop where a 23 year old scrum half is let go while we keep a 31 year old scrum half. No offence to Blade who's been a great servant but if you are keeping one surely it's the player who is 8 years younger. Or even keep Blade and move Murphy on. Keeping all three seems unsustainable as they all want to play.

I think all 4 of our 9's are out of contract at the end of the season.

In an ideal world we would sign Devine to 3 years. Id personally like to retain Murphy but as you rightly say the Green Shoots etc

The problem with retaining Devine over either Murphy or Blade is that he can't box kick to save his life. He's an absolute livewire in other aspects of his game and is a reasonable passer, but if he can't improve his box kicking under coaching here then he may well be the one to cut. Green shoots/shirts or none.

He was dogshit but he wasn't the reason we lost the game.

I know the game today is all about players having to be able to execute every skill. It’s like there’s a checklist. I don’t know if Devine is particularly terrible at one thing or perfectly competent at another. For example, I thought his pass was pretty good. But he does seem to be fast, highly instinctive and pretty attack minded. It’s like he knows he can make things happen. Not arrogant but very sure.

He may be far from the finished article but if Connacht were to lose him, it would be a disgrace really. It would be against all they claim to try to do. We were outraged about Tom Farrell but that would be nothing on a local young man with such potential.

At last match, Devine made a try and an assist by good passing to Jansen. On the other hand, Murphy missed a crucial tacling to Ward (who suceeded 2nd try). In fact Murphy's hands touched Ward's legs. But it's only touching and not helpful for stopping(or making to delay) Ward's running. I want to know which do you select as a SH? And in this game, Devine box-kicked 4~5 times and one of them was obviously too short, but he jumped and caught his own failed kicking by himself for fulfill his own responsibility. And I think that other SHs of Connacht are not good kickers as same as him. I want to know who is best box-kicker in Ireland. JGP or Casey?

Frawley confirmed on a 2 year deal. Not entirely show how to best use him but improving the quality of the squad can only be a good thing surely. The more player turnover the better from my perspective.

Frawley strikes me as a guy with a winner's mentality, which we seem to need more of.

Couldn’t agree more. Can’t see him not playing ten and maybe fifteen if injuries. He may not be perfect but he is a big signing.

Super signing! Huge asset for Connacht.

Murphy could have done better but most scrum halves are going to struggle to tackle a 100kg winger one on one. A good defensive system should limit such mismatches. Just from that try I would be more concerned about:

    • All three front rows on the short side. This means that there is no scramble defense in place to cover for Murphy's missed tackle, whereas a back row may have the pace. The highlights don't show the preceding phase but this could have the result of the front rows not working hard enough to fold around the previous breakdown.
    • A terrible read from Daniel Ryan, gets caught in absolute no man's land. That's fine, young players make mistakes. But where's the fullback? My understanding is that if the blindside wingers shoots, the fullback should fill his place and the openside winger should cover the backfield. However, I'm not an expert on backfield cover.
    • The halfbacks are the two last men. I'd have to look in more detail to see if that's by design, but it seems to happen quite a bit. Having your two smallest players two on two with the opposition's most dangerous attackers is asking for trouble.

He is the fastest SH we have…

I don't seem to remeber his box kicking being that bad… Murphy has the odd bad one, like every SH..

I think if we had one to go it should be Blade… Great servant but youth is more important… He would be very good in Ulster, kinda suits them…

If it became between Murphy and Devine, I would probably swing towards Devine… Murphy in fairness has a home in Leinster or Ulster…

I think the defence was so bad when Lancaster came in that he could use young lads as well as old lads…

Connacht have been 2+ years without a dedicated defensive coach, yet we have two forwards coaches…

Might be best we move towards n more Irish structure in coaching…

    Generally it is :

    Head Coach

    Attack Coach

    Defence Coach

    Forwards Coach

    Performance Analyst

Some have a Senior Coach but I couldn't see Lancaster not wanting to do that… There is also a skills coach which is taken as an extra role as well..

I think we need a couple front five signings for next season also. We are obviously quite light in the front five. We have smallish props who are also now getting on in years. Barrett is a big lump in fairness but inexperienced. A good solid prop and a big powerful second row would probably do wonders for this team. Just to add a bit of thump up front.

Does anyone have a list of squad members and their contract durations (where known)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭Joma4good

I honestly think it would be criminal to let Devine go, he has more X factor in terms of speed and alertness than Murphy even if both look a bit physically light for today’s game. We probably can’t keep both and satisfy their need for first team minutes (I’d love it, if we could) but I’d happily settle for Devine with Blade as backup. Bringing in Frawley and playing him at 10 with Devine alongside at 9, Cathal Forde and Gavin at centres would be great to see.
I think Bundee is on the wane and even if he can still raise his game for Irish camps, he’s just not offering anything like consistent performances at URC level. I’d like to see us say thanks for everything you’ve done and move on.
Not sure where we get the front row replacements we need, but worrying when DTM replaced Heffernan the lineout wobbled so badly that we resorted to choosing a scrum instead of a lineout.

If I had my way, we get new starters at 1 and at 2 and at 5. Squad additions won’t cut it if we are to kick on imho. We are very weak there currently. Many of our current options are just not good enough. Now where we get them is another matter!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,663 ✭✭✭FACECUTTR

I completely agree we need decent players in @ 1, 2 and lock. Squad players are not needed. Frawley is a great signing but the backline is decent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

    1, 2, 5 and 13 for me.

I would like to to see Cathal Forde and Seamus Hurley Langton resigned as a matter of urgency.

Agreed on those 2. We need back up to Heff as neither DTM or de Buitlear are good enough. McKee or Gus McCarthy from Leinster or Lancaster to go back to Racing for their hooker we had here for pre-season training might work. We have to hope Lasisi can come through to back up Dooley as Bucks will surely retire at the end of this season and Duggan doesn't look URC standard. At lock could we persuade Roux to finish his career here? If not then O'Tighnearaigh from Leinster or Jack Dunne back from Japan. Joyce and Dave O'Connor likely to be on their way at the end of the season. Great to get Frawley in to start at 10 next season and if we could get Larmour in too that would be a result.

Question for you all. If we had the funds for one major marquee foreign signing, what position to you fill it with?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

SHL out until March after shoulder surgery last week. I thought he was on his way back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,054 ✭✭✭Zeugnis

That's a heavy blow. He was already out for two months prior to the Black Lions game and without him our jackal threat is minimal.

Once Cian takes off for Ireland camp that will leave Sean O'Brien with the 7 jersey. In case of an injury it would be Oisin McCormack or Max Flynn.

Tight 5, props and locks needed to strengthen the squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Agreed. Loosehead is probably more realistic, they tend to command lesser salaries. Tighthead locks are hugely in demand and tend to be top earners, particularly in France. Our best bet is surely Quinn Roux, as he'd get sportsperson relief if he retires here and apparently has a house in Galway, which would make relocation simpler than in France. I've seen Jack Dunne mentioned but tbh I don't think he'd be an upgrade on Dave O'Connor. If he had significant potential I think he would have realised it at either Leinster or Exeter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

John Madigan and Daniel Brennan from france please and maybe Kelliher from Leinster and I'd be happy enough.

Quinn Roux is ancient, I'm expecting him to announce his retirement soon.

I think that Comac Daly is better than Dunn (if he is OK to short term contract =1year). He plays at Cagood line-out operaternon (not Cannon) Eagles currently since last season, but watching the situation of the team where he plays, maybe he will have little chance to remain. I don't know what happened within him and Connacht in the past time he left, but now he looks healthy and good line-out (and defensive maul) operater. So if he want to continue to be rugby player, he may be a good selection. I think he is better than D.O'Connor (too short as a lock) and Dunn (looking injury-concerns).
