So I'm back at the workstation now so I can see the spreadsheet.

My annual elec is 2400… My annual gas is 15067

As I mentioned before I'm not doing Yuno Energy or Bord Gais as they estimate bills… I want the exact usage charged as the others do when they read the meters.

So on EnergyPal removing Yuno Energy and Bord Gais left Electric Ireland and Airtricity (in that order) as top picks for me

    image.png image.png

on Switcher and Bonkers after removing Yuno Energy and Bord Gais top pick was

    image.png

Which is €60 - €142 lower than the ones that were recommended by EnergyPal (sorry not €200 as I mentioned before but still significant)

The Electric Ireland one was 24 hour so there was nothing involving day/night/peak usage that might have tweaked the figures in favour over the Energia 24 hour offering.

The only thing I can see that might be messing up EnergyPal is the higher than standard gas usage ?

    yes

Great info here folks. My dual fuel contract with BG is up today so I'll switch on Monday when I have a few minutes. Flogas are coming in best for me for both - I've been with them before and you get used to their little idiosyncracies.

I've been with BG for two years and never got an estimated bill so I don't know where you got that information?

My electricity is a smart meter so that's accurate. I submit a gas meter reading every month and they use my reading for the bills. In fact, they send an email close to bill time to remind you to submit a reading in the next four days to avoid an estimated bill.

If they'd come down a bit on price I'd have stayed with them as they've the best app and are generally efficient.

Bord Gais do level pay ...so they estimate monthly usage and then send same amount every month.

Im often out of the country so some months I should expect to be charged very little. In fact with FloGas I didnt have to pay a cent for first 4 months as my usage was within the 300 free credit.

I'd go Flogas with the credit again if I could

Always had to before even when i looked a couple of years ago, maybe they've changed it now...anyway my Energia still seemed to be cheaper for me so I'll stick with it

On your gas calculations, you are omitting the carbon tax?

    No carbon tax:

With carbon tax (which broadly matches EnergyPal):

    image.png

I also created a fake HDF file with 2400 units used during the day hours only (night and peak 0) to see what Bonkers would spit out. I got the following which is broadly in line with energypal:

Ah ok, it's a smart plan. That explains it. Thanks anyway!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,874 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

the carbon tax doesn't change per supplier, so no need to include.

I'm not calculating the ACTUAL final figure as it will obviously change depending on usage, I'm calculating the figures that are different between suppliers, i.e. the rate and standing charge and discounts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,002 ✭✭✭bren2001

I understand that alright but my approach was to match EnergyPals figure as a method to find out where the error was. Your calculation matches what EnergyPal has for Energia.

I do wonder was it a case of the site not updating with a change with one of the suppliers because for 2400 units (elec) and 15,067 units (gas), energy pal gives me:

    image.png

As your HDF will have different D/N/P usage, yours may look different. However, energypals figures look correct when I randomly spot check them. I don't see any error.

If you put your HDF back in it, does it still produce the same output?

no idea, it might have been an error ok… anyway I'm done with it all till next year!

Hi @mrcheez, Radek here from Energypal, someone brought this post to my attention.

Would you mind sharing the details of why do you think the website was incorrect and what was the best plan in your case? If possible, an anonymised HDF file (with the MPRN number removed) would be very helpful.

EnergyPal uses relatively simple logic so I wouldn't expect much room for an error there. That said, EnergyPal does account for plan-specific details, such as the 1000 kWh cap on energia EV plans or different weekend peak hours on some BordGais plans.

Thanks in advance and happy to look into this further.

Changed to Flogas's "loyalty" rate (28.54c/kWh 24h) over a month ago when my first year with them was done. Got the confirmation email/letters etc.

They did not apply the rate. They've been charging me just under 40c a unit!

Of course there's a massive call queue today too, I wonder if there's a load of people calling to complain about the same thing.

The gas rate did apply weirdly.

    Hi All,

When coming out if contract and switching provider, when's the best time to do this. Contract up with my current provider on the 1st of January and trying to figure out when to sign up to a new provider. Thanks all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,137 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

The consensus is sign up after your previous contract had ended i.e. on 2nd of January. I don't think any provider has shown themselves to be reliable at managing switches in advance.

Friday 2nd January is definitely the day. They should be "open"

The only issue is that some of those promos might be set to expire on 31st and new promos might not be loaded.

But then again, who knows these days, one needs to check daily anyhow.

Noticed this news titbit - the State is effectively subsidising national energy companies, through method that personal welfare payments keep local businesses afloat. Why would a firm lower charges when there is an effective price floor?

the WFP will become a qualifying payment for Fuel Allowance (€1000pa).. “This means about a quarter of Irish households (475k homes) are actually getting support from the state,” said Minister O’Brien.

If that's your reading of it I'd stay off the sherry.

Was that to switch from the BWG plan to new customer one?

I posted the below in October wondering the same:

"Has anyone on the Flogas BWG plan managed to switch to the Flogas new customer fixed dual fuel plan?

Paying 23.22 for electricity & 7.25 for gas (ex VAT) vs 22.10 & 6.80 on offer for 12 months fixed.

I know I'm fixed and in a contract until September next year so no benefit to them to allow it.

Based on my usage would save the guts of €60."

Yes, they wouldn't do it, wouldn't change me to bi-monthly billing either, not very nice to deal with tbh, as soon as anyone cheaper comes along I'll leave them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,274 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

out of curiosity what is wrong with monthly billing ?

I didn’t request it but they put me on it and I just carried on and got used to it

First time ever having it I certainly never requested it, as you say I'll get used to it.

I am still with Flogas (until tomorrow) and I cannot recommend them, the way they sneaky announced their recent price hike which included a significant hike to the standing charge was absolutely unacceptable.

Sure, they did it in line with government regulations but instead of calling out the individual raises, they just mixed it all together and gave the xx% on an average bill.

When questioning it, I got a lengthy answer that did not even address the point about the standing charge, first telling me there was no hike and then when pressing, they told me it's not required that they announce the details of it, it's good enough if they tell me that my average bill will go up.

I guess the brand new headquarter requires higher prices.

caught me by surprise at first and I didn’t see it anywhere in the contract, strange system but it was the cheapest option for me

Who are you moving to? I'm not impressed with their sneaky behaviour either.

The bill amount taken in December is for usage from mid October to mid November making it tricky when it comes to leaving them.
