It's very difficult to see how Putin would agree to any 'peace deal'. He keeps telling the Russian public he is winning the war ; it would have to be some sham of an agreement that gives Russia virtually everything it wants and which visibly screws over Ukraine before he would sign it.

The only reason we keep hearing about these peace talks month after month is because the orange one is in thrall to Putin and Russia and doesn't like Zelensky.

Trump said he would fix it on day one. Ignoring that it's been a year and he hasn't fixed it, but I expect him to get some kind of a deal passed, and then a complete embargo on news from Ukraine, so that the American public don't hear that the cease fire lasted all of 15 minutes and things continued on. Or that, a Ukranian soldier fired in defence at some infringement from Russia and Trump says that Ukraine broke the terms of the cease fire, and so he is washing his hands of the situation.

Id like to think after his demise there will be a concerted effort to scrub his name from everything .. I’d imagine after this maga nonsense is gone the name Trump will be dirt

I still think Putin is the fly in the ointment here and that he will refuse to sign any peace deal with Trump. How would he sell such a peace agreement to the Russians? It would have to be on the basis of 'Look everyone, I screwed over Zelensky and the Ukrainians and left them humiliated'. People are nearly forgetting the context of how and why the invasion happened in February 2022 and what Russia's war aims were at that point.

Oh absolutely. Any deal Putin signs is either going to be heavily in Russias favour or have such narrow parameters it will be impossible to be enforced by normal terms.

Part of me envies the Junior cert history students of years to come who will have to cover the Trump era, but as you say, I suspect it will be get swept under the carpet and anything with his name on it will be forgotten.

The big part for university levels is it upends a lot of concepts like rational leaders in major powers. US foreign policy pretty much becomes a comedy act… I would say the likes of conspiracy theories do end in a weird scenario where they've got a lot more evidence than anything in modern US history.

Zelenski has announced they have reached agreement on security guarantees by the US, for the next 15 years.

Unfortunately considering who is in charge that agreement is not worth the paper it's written on.

Trump says peace is not a "one day" process.... He should tell that to _checks notes_ Donald Trump, who campaigned on ending the Russia Ukraine war in _checks notes_ one day.

I just watched an episode of The West Wing where President Bartlet says "Never quote me to me!". I'd imagine DJT has a similar sentiment.

Are you sure ? The BBC says

"The US president said an agreement on this point was "close to 95%" done, but Ukraine's leader has since said that he wants guarantees for up to 50 years"

I heard it on RTE news at one so who knows how accurate it is.

    From NPR article.

    https://www.npr.org/2025/12/19/nx-s1-5619695/poverty-safety-net-programs-2025-chaos

At HAPCAP, services include Meals on Wheels, Head Start, a public bus system, employment help, and a food bank that serves 10 counties across southeast Appalachian Ohio.

It's an impressive range, but this year that's also made it a big target for federal funding cuts.

In a statement, an OMB spokesperson said these anti-poverty programs fund "radically partisan activities, like teaching toddlers to be antiracist and 'LGBTQIA+ welcoming.'" It also criticized a program that combined affordable housing with clean energy "in the pursuit of both economic and environmental justice."

"President Trump ran on fiscal responsibility and ending wasteful DEI spending in government," the statement says."The American taxpayer should not be made to fund critical race theory."

    FFS!

"radically partisan activities, like teaching toddlers to be antiracist and 'LGBTQIA+ welcoming.'"

Saying the quiet part out loud. They have no shame or decency or integrity. These are the people who call themselves Christians. But of course we knew that, why does this kind of thing continue to be shocking?

"Like teaching toddlers to be anti-racist". Coz, thats such a bad thing isn't it?

Having seen another video of the Media briefing [not the short clip I had seen] where Zelenskyy showed his feeling by facial expressions and hands gripping the rostrum while listening to Trump, I'm obliged to think Zelenskyy was controlling his emotions well.

Roy Moore, I think. He certainly looks the part.

The Oval Office ambush back in February was, arguably, the very best thing that could have happened to/for Zelenskyy. I'm convinced that everyone roaming the "corridors of power" in the Civilised World was so shocked and disgusted at the behaviour of the Trump-Vance duo that it pushed them to provide Zelenskyy with whatever additional diplomatic and statesmanship training - and moral support - he'd been lacking up till then.

In years to come, I think it'll be shown that it was that event more than Trump's general ranting and on-off tarrif wars that rammed home to European leaders the message that the USA had gone full MAGAstan in all its savagery and there'd be no turning back for the foreseeable future.

Yes, Roy Moore it was. Perhaps his notion of discretion was taking off his hat.

Page 24 [comment section] of the Irish Indo, Tuesday 24 March, 2025 covered the ambush with its two page image of the Oval Office meeting. Zelenskyy with his arms folded, Trump in full flow, right hand extended, shouting him down for his "ingratitude", with Vance doing the same, arms and hands extended toward Zelenskyy. A moment in time when the world caught Trump and Vance live being ****.

I think that was the worst meeting of its kind I’ve ever seen.

Putin has accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack on his residence to kill him on the day after the talks between Zelenskyy and Trump, a few days after Trump said he had a good phone conversation with Putin about the talks. I guess I cant help being sceptical about there being any truth to Putin's tale what with Lavrov threatening Ukraine in response to the alleged drone attack. Such peace-loving people, the Russian Administration.

These type of haranguing encounters nearly always happen behind closed doors. But even by that standard, this was an unusual encounter - Trump and Vance were practically shouting at Zelensky, really aggressive and confrontational.

The really interesting thing about this poll is that the numbers for Independents are very close to those for Democrats.

    His "residence"? AKA The Kremlin?

    Somehow I doubt that.

My guess is its all lies. A bit like what i predicted earlier.

Ukraine emphatically denied a Russian allegation Monday that a Ukrainian drone attack targeted one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences.

President Donald Trump said Putin told him of the alleged attack in a phone call early Monday. Trump indicated that he took Putin at his word before allowing, in response to a reporter’s question about the Ukrainian denial, that the attack may not have occurred.

As a result of the alleged attack in the Novgorod region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who first publicly aired the allegation, said “Russia’s negotiating position will be revised” in the ongoing peace talks seeking to end Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Lavrov said no damage or casualties resulted from the incident but that the Russian military has selected targets for “retaliatory strikes.”

He appeared to be referring to the heavily fortified Valdai presidential residence, which is situated on the shores of Lake Valdai in Novgorod Oblast in northwestern Russia. Lavrov did not claim that Putin was in Novgorod at the time.

Putin told Trump it happened. Trump believed him but then conceded that maybe Putin had been telling porkie pies.

If this was a plot of some political satire, people would say it's too far fetched.

    Now Trump has said he believes Putin's version. He heard about the attack from him and Trump is angry about it;
