I remember a time when banks used to pay businesses for choosing then to be their financial institution.

Now they charge businesses for being their financial institution.

What did that tell you about the link between banks and law makers??

Absolute bollox, most taxi drivers take card or cash as they cant refuse card payments.

If it were affordable for them, yes. But again this is a very small rural pub. It wouldn't have a huge turnover.

A pub I go to in West Cork is cash-only because of bank charges.

Otherwise, stalls at farmers' markets, festivals etc are able to take card payments more and more now.

Avoiding bank charges is fair though, imo.

I remember going to Iceland about 15 years ago and the coffee dock at the bottom of a waterfall in the middle of nowhere was card only. The whole country was card only. Taxis, bars etc. It was an eye opener as to what was to come.

We definitely have to retain it without a doubt. I've been interested in a lot of hobbiest things over the years and buying and selling stuff is always done in cash.

It peculiar that this crops up every now and again. You virtually nevery see a thread a pit businesses that are card only and there is a few.

Many small businesses in rural just about survive by having cash customers whether its pubs, food, hairdressers or barbers. Many have gone cash only due to the preference of younger customers to use card only. I always try to support them by paying cash even if both options are available.

It's not just banks that take a cut if the action, insurance companies charge by turnover to some industries for public liability

Last cash only mainstream business I knew of was the Gravediggers pub in Glasnevin… however I see now they take cards, sensible… was a sort of quirk and charm for them… no cards, no tv, just good pints, good food and good craic…I suppose with the onset of contactless payments being so prevalent their hand was forced….

Covid was a turning point for card use as people didn't want to be touching notes and coins, one food trailer owner I know said prior to covid 90% of there payments were cash and afterwards it was 10%

As soon as Covid ended, I went back to cash. It's my preferred method of payment. If a place is card only, I'll go elsewhere.

Only use cash if there's a price reduction.

If they're not paying income tax on it then the price to me should be reduced imo.

sunup charge 1.69% and no other charge.

You gain more customers when You take cards.
you also don’t take in counterfeit notes, give out wrong change or get robbed.

So it’s far more beneficial to take cards

    Starlink works well.

They all have a once off fee for the terminal. There cheapest terminals are suitable only for businesses that take once off payments for bills. The reality is if you are taking regular payments throughout the day you need the more expensive card readers. The cheaper readers do not provide printouts so are not suitable for small businesses. There is I would guess why most businesses that accept card payments use the more expensive machines.

As well for all the BS about it costing the consumer nothing small sole traders like trades people are factoring in the extra cost to there pricing structure. As one tradesperson said to me he just added a tenner onto his callout charge.

As well the card charges are on total turnover. Therefore a small rural business taking 5k in card payments will have a vat bill of 600 euro, utility bill for water, phone, electricity of 500-1k, insurance 50-100 or more per month, accountancy fees 100-150/ month, Bank charges premises rental etc and the card company wants another 85+ per month.

No. Assuming guilt without proof is a wrong road to go down and goes against the political culture that made us free.

I want financial freedom and financial privacy with the assumption of innocence.

You could in theory wipe out all crime with sufficient totalitarianism. A financial dictatorship is perfectly logical in one sense, and no doubt many (most?) Irish people now support total surveillance of all transactions.

A particular Nail salon in county town. The owner refuses to take debit or credit cards and is fully booked out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,098 ✭✭✭growleaves

There is counterfeiting of debit cards through card cloning, theft of cards etc.

For every new method of payment there are new methods of stealing and defrauding.

Yes and in the case of a retailer taking a fraudulent transaction they get caught for that transaction.

The card fees line that is trotted out is a complete red herring. If you lodged notes with aib they charge 0.45c for every 100 lodged while it's 2.00 for coins lodged.

The reality is it's not been lodged it's going under the matress as a tax dodge and the revenue won't be long going after you.

Same situation here, I've 2 sides to the business, commercial and private, commercial is always bank transfers etc, private is whatever, I find people will always look for the without VAT option,.

While I do use my credit card a lot (paying off the balance every month), definitely a Covid development, I do like some cash on me for micro payments (coffee and the like) or if my card refuses to work inexplicitly which it has on a few occasions. I also like to keep my PP a/c topped up for the odd low value online purchase.

People don't realise that Visa and most other card companies are American owned making billions worldwide. So you might think you're boycotting Trump's USA but really you aren't.

Very few small rural business lodge coins. Locally 20+ years ago the local pub, shop and take away bought a coin counting machine. The chippers and shopping had too much coin, the publican required it. Local barber and hairdressers take a small bit of coin as well. What is lodged is miniscule. Local GAA and Soccer club borrow the coin machine after a fundraiser. It was just another expense rural businesses had to get rid of. Along with the fact the nearest bank is 20 miles awaw

Cash is only used by aul lads

Imo I use cash for nipping in for small shop, chip shop and barber .I love knowing what I have spent and not buying stuff that is not needed. With a card you can not really see the value of money unless you budget to spend only x amount like 50 euro for diesel.

I think if people are paying by card they buy alot more then is necessary ,no wonder nearly every house is full of junk ,people buying stuff on the spur of the moment that they have no use what so ever for! If you only have certain amount of cash in pocket this concentrates the mind a bit better!!

I dont mind cash but I never spend the coins, I have a 20 litre tub that I throw all my coins into, at the last weigh in I had around 60 kilos of coins in it. Its a handy way to save a few bob for holidays or something thats not budgeted for

Cash only businesses without a transaction receipt is definitely a tax dodge. Maybe all are not, but the majority are. There is no justifiable reason to be cash only these days.

Top of the list are the food stalls selling over priced coffee, ice cream, burgers, issue no receipts and pay staff in cash.
