Do you think its fair to assume that any business that is "cash only" must be up to no good ?

No it's fair to assume they don't want to deal with external financial institutions. As long as they adequately forewarn their customers it's OK with me.

BTW I find cash only businesses are pretty common in Portugal and imagine there are other countries in mainland Europe where they're more common than in Ireland.

Yes. The dog groomers near us is 'cash only'. I get stuck with collecting the dog, aka paying the bill. The lad who runs it always rings up and says the dog it ready, but you must pay cash. I asked does he take cheques, did not go down well. Lucky the dog is now barred, as she is 'too vicious to even get a muzzle on'. I bought a clippers for half the price as a cut, and the children cut her hair in the garden.

The only ones I have seen locally are takeaways.

Yes. Some of them look like they don't actually want any customers, they'd just get in the way of whatever the real purpose of the business is

Well, when banks take a 4% plus take on using the card, why would they?
    Cash is king.

If you care about customers you would give a choice

Is it really as high as that. I always thought it was 2%

As far as I’m concerned, they fall into one or more of the following categories:

    • Up to no good, be it as a money laundering operation or simply tax dodging.
    • Paranoid/conspiracy cranks - More common in Germany, particularly eastern Germany, but I’ve met some of those over here as well.
    • Only a few years away from retirement, so they don’t bother with making the move.

Now, there is a fourth category, he only one where i can actually somewhat understand it, and that’s traders at farmers markets and the like. Often, those don’t want to deal with the logistics of having a card terminal around, keeping it charged, etc.. But that’s about the only case.

On a more personal level, I find “cash only” businesses irritating and exclusionary in general. For the last month or so, I’ve been dealing with a somewhat restricting neurological condition that produces the function and sensory capabilities of my hands quite considerably. For me, the ability to not just pay by card but pay contactless with my smart watch is quite frankly a lifesaver, as I find both coins and notes really hard to handle at the moment.

I also don’t really buy the argument that cash is more reliable than card payments. True, cash might come in handy during short-term system such as the ones that we’ve seen at the Aldi or this year, however any long-term outage of global payment systems would very quickly cut off the supply of cash as well. Because when it boils down to it, all of the back end systems that control card and contactless payments are also the same systems that control ATMs, automated deposit machines and interbank transfers in general.

So yeah, cash only businesses will not be seeing any of my business if I can at all avoid it.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

    Not at all.

They are in business you are a prospective customer.

As long as they make it clear before you decide to buy from them there isn't a problem.

Should be a discount for cash, 1%, win, win for both sides.

All businesses that are cash only are shady in my opinion. In my experience they NEVER warn you in advance and it's always a "gotcha" when you try to pay.

A local barber does quality haircuts and I like the place. All staff are Moldovan and although they take cards each time I try to pay with one I'm told "OK, but cash next time right?" If you offer cash up front you get a big smile.

The American-style sweet shops are a different beast, I am 100% sure they are fronts for gangland figures.

I hate getting into a taxi and seeing the Cash is King sign, always a red flag that this is some gubbernmint moaner who is guaranteed to start going on about Mehole Martin any minute.

I don't really care if a business is cash only.

    I've two rules tough.

Always have change for your customers and don't complain if they hand you a €50 note.

Have a sign on your door saying "Cash Only" no need for all this rubbish saying cash is king.

Tried to pay cash for a couple of low value purchases during the week, trying to save them on fees if they were fixed. Both times was asked did I have exact change when I offered a tenner, ended up cancelling and putting it through again as card

Ive got jobs around the house and have been quoted more expensive prices if im going to use a card rather than cash. Never knew why but of course will always take the cheaper route. Can't blame the tradesman if hes getting stung by the bank preferring cash

If your business is cash only then you are probably losing business which makes very little sense.

I don’t tend to carry cash so if I went to a shop or something and they didn’t take card, chances of me going to an ATM and coming back are slim.

Hes not putting it through the books and saving you and him on vat.

In the past couple of years, my hairdressers have been regularly claiming technical difficulties meaning cash only. They send out a text the day before telling you cash only. Looking through the texts, it's been 4 out of 8 times in 2025 and probably the same last year too. I find it very awkward to have to get the cash out and yes, also suspicious. It's a large chain of salons (not quite Peter Mark) and I just think it's nonsense. I am going to find somewhere else in the new year because I'm fed up of the hassle. So yes I think it's mostly dodgy but would believe it was down to the fees for a small business maybe.

A couple of the local pubs in my village are cash only, and I have no issues with that! Their business, their rules……. If customers don’t like it, they can choose with their feet, it doesn’t seem to be an issue for them for the last couple of years anyway!

Cash only places are usually run by auld fellas "Trying to beat the system" types!

A sure fire way to get a visit from the Tax man.

It's all about hiding money from the taxman. Most taximen are cash only and only declare the bare minimum to avoid paying little or no tax. I suppose why not if you can get away with it.

A small rural pub in North County Dublin is cash only. I enquired of the bar lady why after paying for our round. She told me the landline into the pub can't support a DSL signal it's so bad. There's no fibre nearby either. The location is in a known low spot where mobile signals are also bad. Thus there's no way to provide the required connectivity for a card machine.

my local chinese takeaway is cash only. I have no issues with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,251 ✭✭✭Greyfox

Thats the complete opposite to giving the customer a choice and also the way to put yourself out of business

The Glimmerman Pub in Stoneybatter is cash only, think it's the only cash only spot like that in Dublin I know of anymore.

ATM in the door as you walk in. It's actually quite nostalgic to take a 20 out of the machine and buy a few pints.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,676 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

Cash is King, no sign of the Glimmerman going out of business I bet.

I run a business and most of the time when you give a price plus vat to people most of them will ask about a cash price without the vat, everyone wants a cheaper deal and some older people will often complain about having to pay the vat.
