The site is safe for 14 months, the rest is speculation.

Owners said €100k needed. €30k (ish) was raised. In meantime owners worked on agreement with vanilla (hosting platform) and, as a result, the money raised as well as advertising changes/etc has resulted in the site being safe for 14 months at least.

People have questioned what the longer term plan is to make the site viable, owners have indicated they will engage with the membership to see what can be done.

Sounds great! Thanks for the update. Always good to see improvements being made, and an ad-free option is definitely appreciated. I’ll check out the subscription page and see how it fits. Thanks to the team for keeping the community going!

long time poster just back. It’s great to see the site survive for another while. What’s are the chances that defunct/moribund/moderator-less forums are closed or merged with more active ones? In motoring and transport there are a few sub forums like the insurance ones and classic cars that get one new thead a month a only a few posts total. I’m sure there’s more areas like this two.
I think a forum needs 2 mods at least. Otherwise it’s what I says goes’ when you’ve one mod only which isn’t ideal for anyone, mod included.

My subscription is up for renewal in January .

There is a new consent page blocking access to signing in which I am unhappy about . The whole point of subscribing is to be adree and I don't ever consent to my data being used by random websites .

Can this be sorted please before January @Boards.ie: Mike ?

While I agree with the sentiment, when you post anything on a public website, what you've posted is effectively in the public domain and accessible to web-scrapers for use for whoever wants it. I'm guessing the consent thing is just to make you aware of what was always going to be the case. Less of an issue on sites like boards where your identity isn't exposed than social media where you have your name and photograph, what you say won't get attributed to you personally nor have any direct effect on your profile elsewhere.

Boards.ie has changed its ad campaign host. There is some outstanding bugs and quirks that have popped up that need to be addressed. As you have mentioned the paid member role is now being served ads which is not expected. This will be resolved as soon as possible. There are absolutely no guarantees that this will be “before January”.

The consent form for that s also an exception extend request for each user on their first login since this change over. It is possible to select what you are served or not served. I completed the form yesterday myself.

Have a great Christmas everyone! Best, Mike.

This is nothing to do with what you post. It's about hundreds of advertising cookies.

PITA and if you clear data when you log out (as you should) you have to do this all over again (and scroll down to the ones that are hidden)

IMO any cookie form that does not have a prominent "Reject All" button is not compliant and it is forcing the user who doesn't want this crap to jump through hoops.

There should definitely be a reject all option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,283 ✭✭✭ForestFire

This is another "change" that's going to drive users away

@Boards.ie: Mike you ask for feedback and I think this is a big one.

I have to unclick around 50 toggle switches to turn all tracking off. Not sure if your new ad provider is US Based, but can you confirm you are meeting the EU regulations on GDPRe for this. Here's what Gemini gives as a summary, especially related to the default settings and the reject all option.

If fact we should not have to opt out, we should only have to opt in!

How can I find out when I subscribed, and when my next subscription is due?

I've had a look at my profile page and can't see anything there.

Current status should be really easy to find, no? Especially if another DD is due - or will I get an email in advance of that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,348 ✭✭✭xhomelezz

Email? I get reminder by email good bit before my subscription is up. It's not that hard to find it.

Hit the switch to keep the lights on.

Do you still get the cookie if you never get served the ad? e.g. if you're a subscriber. I would have thought not but am open to correction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,189 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

I get that you won't have it sorted before January . I wasn't getting at you personally but apologize if that's how it came across .

You didn't say how you completed that endless form with any ease .. I don't want cookies saved so would appreciate some guidance on it .

After that a happy Christmas to you too .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,189 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

    This exactly .

The previous form was detailed but after rejecting legit interest on 5 paragraphs it then progressed to object all vendors which was doable . This form has no general objection and multiple individual companies that are expressing legit interest in saving data and applying cookies and is not something I agree to normally .

I usually avoid sites that do this but on the case of boards would hope to have some sort of workaround especially if paying a subscription .

    I am a subscriber .

I logged out, cleared my cache as I regularly do which helps with bugs , do usually have a simple two page consent form to complete as described above , when logging back in .But last night after returning from a relative's funeral down the country , was faced with an almost impossible new consent form again as described above before I could log in at all .

I don't think it was an unreasonable request to know why this has been applied and at this time of year when nobody will be around to fix it .😳

As I posted in the feedback, Please don't sell my data, this particular cookie seems similar to Admiral designed to frustrated with overtime misdirection a simple reject all is needed it seems overkill to covertly selling data like this with some of the cookies lasting very long.

Sad that it has come to this.

Mike is gone for Christmas and in fairness this is not his fault . It's this shxt hosting site

Happy Christmas to all and to all a good site !

@Goldengirl Was wondering what the fuss about the consent form was about. My security prevented it from showing.

Had to disable my DNS settings on router, Portmaster (on windows) and had to clear my cache on mobile when temporarily disabled my private DNS to not see the consent form again. (Options nextdns.io or adguard dns using the free account versions of them.)

It is a chore to go through and I didn't even do so. Just blocked again so I don't have to consent or not to them.

@smacl When your logged out, the site doesn't know your a subscriber.

Understand this, but boards introduced this 2 days before Christmas, not me or any other user, and without really testing, or at least thinking about potential consequences, it seems?

Unfortunately Mike, and anyone else with a Boards user name, work or represents boards, and it just happens Mike was the last to post looking for feedback.

Now, I personally don't mind if this takes some time to resolve, but this is normally a big turn off on websites for me, and not everyone maybe as patient as me, and again Mike asked for feedback.

Also for further inf, I've not had to repeat the process yet, so it was just a once off, on my side, and I'm good ...for now.

As a result of this though, I have also noticed, in the mobile site at least, if you click on the main menu , the consent link doesn't work.

    1000026681.png

And If you select desktop site, none of the links at the end of the page work, including cookies...another bug to be addressed in the new year, but again quite significant due to the new changes and just letting the powers that need to know aware.

Absolutely. Same here . Not a case of shooting the messenger .

It's not on really having this over the Christmas period but nothing more can be done unfortunately until everybody back in January as he said .

This will affect how people feel about renewing subscriptions though some of which would be coming due because we were promised improvements and instead we get this !

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 16,305 Mod ✭✭✭✭smacl

Fair enough. I only clear my cache if something goes wrong with my browser which is very rare indeed. Don't tend to use many sites with much in the way of ads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,189 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

    Yes . I don't either .

Thats why I am not happy about this .

There is no way short of logging out clearing my cache now to get rid of this as it stands as the " consent " toggle on the mobile anyway does not work at all now to change preferences . I see this is being discussed elsewhere on the site by others too .

For this to happen just before Christmas is very annoying.

I feel my only option here is to log out , clear the cache of cookies etc and not log in now again until the New Year when this convoluted new consent issue is sorted out .

    That's me gone 😐

Edit : just to follow on from this, it took me 5 full minutes to scroll down turning off consent until I finally got to Confirm Choices and I am still not sure I have a fully completed refusal .
