Enjoying a Dot Brew Brown Ale (5%) from Aldi. Loads of malt, toffee and cocoa and a decent amount of bitterness to hold back the sugar.

Haven't seen them in my local branch yet, must keep an eye out!

On the subject or dark beer, having a Kinnegar Dark Rye IPA. Top notch.

I've been drinking a good few stouts and brown ales lately.

Macadamia nut brown ale from Lough Gill is very good.

Stout wise, O'Hara's Nitro, Lublin to Dublin coffee stout and also Lough Gill Shamrock Breakfast Stout.

Ooh must get some of that Aldi brown ale.

King Goblin vs Abbot Reserve tonight… had them separately many times but this was the first time I'd compared them directly. Abbot Reserve won hands down - it showed up the Goblin as much more sugary, even sickly.

I tried O haras hop adventure nelson sauvin last night. I'd definitely recommended its a really nice IPA

I was interested to try this as I really like the Nelson Sauvin hop but didn't find that it came through. Ok pale ale but didn't deliver as promised.

The Dot Brew Brown ale from Aldi is lovely though. I've gone back for more.

Seconded on the lacklustre O'Hara's effort with Nelson Sauvin. Benefit of the doubt, maybe, that it was handled poorly by Tesco (picked up off unrefrigerated shelf, assumed it was stored in similar ambient conditions for some time) but still uninspiring.

Tree’s up just in time for the Toy Show.

Vault City Crunch (15.0% ABV) - it was… an experience…

What kind of a beer is that?

I had an interesting barrel aged stout from a Northern Irish brewery tonight. Stouts Out from Bullhouse Brew. 8.4%. Impressive that the stout flavours shine through more than the whiskey/oak.

That said, I felt like I was missing something and ended up cracking open a 2024 Pointy Shoes from Wicklow Wolf as well. I think that one had 12.4% mentioned somewhere on the can. Utterly sensational. Two big treats for one night, but totally worth it.

Imperial stout with chocolate and honeycomb. Also the odd waft of acetone 😂. Very rich, very decadent and at the edge of my sweetness threshold but it does retain balance. A sipper for sure and unusually cheaper here than the UK (eg. McHughs selling at €9.50 + DRS vs UK price around £10).

    Bit of a mouthful tonight!

Wicklow Wolf again. Bourbon barrel aged imperial Four Bean Apex. 13.2%, 440ml can.

Described as "bourbon barrel aged imperial cocoa, coffee, tonka & vanilla bean oatmeal stout". Number 51 in their Endangered Species series.

I had the WW BA Barleywine, The Still Hand.

Found it got fairly cloying by the end of the glass.

Just in case the Mother Mac's lads are reading, that Verdant pale ale from the Advent Calendar today was the loveliest IPA I've had in several years. Perfectly balanced from start to finish.

I bought two bottles of Guiness FES in O'Briens Wines last week.

Although the two ABVs are identical, the bottles shapes are slightly different.

One label says: Brewed in Ireland, then the address St. James's Gate

The other label says Brewed under licence in the UK for Guinness.

Does anybody know the provenance of the second bottle?

    Thanks.

That's very strange. I've never heard of Guinness Foreign Extra Stout being brewed in the UK. Do you have a picture of the label?

I've seen reports of US market FES "brewed under license in the UK" recently.

There was possibly some kinda shortage of FES on the Irish market some months ago, I remember you couldn't get it in O'Briens for a while. Dunno if related.

On a similar subject, tonight's standout was Kinnegar Flying Saucer Foreign Extra Stout (6.5% abv). Good mouthfeel and mildly-sweetened espresso flavour.

Siren collaboration with Evil Twin, a big imperial stout called Even More Jesus XII. 12%. Can bought earlier this year in Bradley's in Cork City, if ai remember correctly. Superb stuff. Up there with the 2020 edition of 200 Fathoms I dug out of my stash the other night.

Haven't heard of Evil Twin in years!

I think he's been based in New York for a long time and hasn't been doing his Gypsy brewing projects since setting up a permanent base there. Was good fun reading up about Mikkeler and Evil Twin and refreshing my knowledge while enjoying the stout! 😃

I had a look in the local Dunnes the other day and the FES was all brewed in UK.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

The Grafters Brown Ale from Dunnes Stores. My local branch seems to have trouble keeping it in stock which is a good sign. Outstanding beer for the price. And much welcome since the parent brewer (Rye River) inexplicably binned the equally excellent Crafty Brown Ale from LIDL.

Rye River didn't bin it, Lidl did. And I'm sure it's entirely explicable on the grounds it wasn't selling as much as they wanted it too. I'm delighted to see Dunnes take it over, and I hope people keep buying it there after the novelty wears off. As you say, it's a spectacular beer at the price. I doubt there's a better deal for €2.10.
