Just to call out Plan B is no where near the cover of HG2! Particular on the day to day element and lack of cover for Mater Private and Blackrock. But if Plan B suits your needs its a good priced plan.

If she wants to stay with HG 2, if she just signs up via one of those links and gets the new customer discount of 8.33%. This will give her a renewal rate of €1,603.64 (assuming after 1st of January).

Cancel current policy and then call Irish life up and add your two kids to Nurture Plus its only €150 per child from 1st of January, better than half price. You would end up with you on HG2 and kids on Nurture Plus, all for c€1,900. Just to flag nurture plus has limited out patient benefits (high excess) but its expectational value at €150.

At risk of overloading the very helpful Ruddy, can I ask a broader question? Who benefits from the HUGE range and complexity of insurance packages on the market?
I'm old enough to remember the good old days when VHI had Plans A, B, C, D, E and that was basically it. The volume of different packages seems just a little bit over the top. Is it just designed to confuse consumers or is there some sensible reason for this?

Hello Ruddy, thank you for your help as renewing health insurance can be a nightmare for most people. I would be grateful if you could advise me if I should stay on Laya Control 300 create, premium for my husband and myself is €4,813. We are both aged 71 and thankfully are in good health with no underlying conditions. We have a GP card so are only interested in good hospital cover. Laya have recommended Essential Health 300 as an alternative which costs €3,550 for both of us. However, we would only have access to Beacon hospital and would lose our cover with Mater Private and Blackrock apart from some specialist cardiac procedures. Ideally, we would like a policy with hospital cover only, which would include the main private hospitals. Many thanks

Ultimately all the confusion suits insurers as people will be on bad value plans more than are on good value plans. I am surprised that the HIA do allow the insurers continue with such a large range of plan options when there really is no need to have 334 plans access 4 four insurers.

The big losers in this are generally older more venerable people who just pay there health insurance every year and don’t make a change.

Hi @ruddy1987, thank you so much for all the input you've provided, you are helping so many boardsies!

I am a 42yo woman with a 21yo son, and in my previous employment we were covered under Laya's Inspire Plus.

A change in work circumstances how now led to me shopping around for insurance I'll be paying for. Inspire Plus was at around 2400 for us two so I am trying to look for something cheaper. Both of us are thankfully healthy, no underlying issues. We both have GP visit cards and have never been admitted to a hospital. The only time I've really claimed from Laya is for new eyeglasses.

I have had a look at the table you posted two pages back, and I believe MyPlan 350 Day to Day would be a suitable plan. Would you have any suggestions other than this one?

Hi @ruddy1987, thanks for all information provided

    I am a single parent 47 with 3 kids ages 12, 10, 5

I am on Laya signify, the kids are on lay flex 125 explore

I have medical history ( mri showed bulging disc but physio is keeping pain at bay) and have had insurance for years so no loading

Should I switch to another plan

    Thanks

My Plan 350 day to day is great value with the discount. It is a big drop off in cover though so you just need to be aware of it (there is also a big premium saving). But if happy with the cover I would say go with it and use the premium savings to part fund some of the drop off in cover.

If you are happy with the cover I would not be recommending any change as Signify is well prcied coupled with your free child offer. Your not going to do much better than that. The only thing is I would move one of the children from flex 125 explore as its poor value unless its free! Something link Signify care or Inspire Plus for one child, and the remaining kids on the free offer.

Hi @ruddy1987 is there a better value plan out there for two adults 66 & 65 year old plan currently they are on Better Ultra ILH, both relatively healthy and non smokers, renewal is coming in at €4575 and new policy due to kick in on 31/12/25, increase of over €600 on last years price.

Thats poor value plan. If relatively healthy and not loads of Private Hospital admissions ( only benefit of that plan is hospital excess payable on first two admissions only).

I would be looking at either Better Select (only semi private room cover) or Health Guide 3 if you want to keep Private room coverage. These plans have much better day to day cover and are cheaper (note increase in ortho co-pay on HG3).

HIA side by side. Definitely would say make a plan change as current plan is bad value and very poor outpatient cover.

    Hi @ruddy1987

Thank you for your expert advice. This is a very informative thread.

I am 57 and currently on PMI 24 10. I have no health issues and just use it for Day to Day cover (very little).

I think I may be over insured but I am aware my future medical needs may require I have this level of cover to qualify for benefits.

Are there any other policies that would give the same hospital cover for less? I live near a VHI clinic in Carrickmines which has proven handy in the past.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

if you want to stay with VHI I’d be looking at PMI 48 10. It’s very similar cover and costs less (main difference overnight excess in private room).

What plan might suit a 62 year old with osteoporosis, high cholesterol and possible cardiac condition?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

do you have a plan currently ? So many factors to consider.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,051 ✭✭✭Kaisr Sose

    Thanks @ruddy1987

That is one of the plans i had put in the HIA comparison tool. It shows as a little more expensive €2132 v 2103 ?

Is there anything from other insurers I should also consider? I have a niggly back issue that I may finally go physio for. I think it was Laya that used to offer a Back Up benefit but do not anymore. Is this benefit offered by another insurer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Irish life health have the back up program which include 6 physio visits for €65 and you can claim the physio benefit of that which is very good. Health guide 3 is your similar plan and with the 5% discount is well priced (link in a few posts back).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,051 ✭✭✭Kaisr Sose

    Thanks @ruddy1987

By any chance did you mean PMI 45 10 rather than 48 10? It's cheaper than 24 10 and seems to have the same hospital cover.

VHI is very confusing with their similar PMI numbering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

PMI 45 10 is only a semi private room (your current plan is private room in private hospital). PMI 45 10 is well priced but be careful it excludes hospitals in cork and Waterford

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭TabbyLongTails

family member is on VHIs company plan (which they are paying out of their own pocket after losing their job, ironic name).

Unfortunately has had cancer in the past and many other issues, in their late 50s. They have no job due to medical issues now, so money is tight enough. Reckon it’s a good plan ruddy or is there better value elsewhere? They have a medical card so day to day treatment isn’t really a necessity since GP visits etc are free. What’s important is cancer cover, and back issues.

company plan has very limited day to day cover due to large excess. If that is not a concern you might stay where you are but if looking at VHI I’d be looking at cover on plans like PMI 52 10, PMI 10 11, PMI 45 10. All those plans have little exclusions and depending on where you are in the country that might impact you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭TabbyLongTails

yeah very little for day to day cover is fine, thanks to the medical card.

Will check those plans, they are in Meath so easy to get to main hospitals in Dublin. Maybe they are better off staying put

    thank you

Hello Ruddy, I would be grateful if you could advise me on my query.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

The big question is do you both need full Ortho cover? I would agree with Layas alternative suggestion If you do.

However if you don’t need the full Ortho cover that opens lots of alternatives.

    Hi Ruddy,

My wife (late 30's) and three children (under 7) are on Laya Health Control 600 Connect which is up for renewal at 2,268 for the year.

I (late 30's) hold a separate policy in my own name with VHI on Enhanced Care 350 at 1,174 for the year.

Thankfully everyone is healthy with no health issues.

Is there any better out there for my wife?

Given I have a separate policy, would it make sense for me to stop my current policy and go on a family one?

Thanks so much for your steer.

Hi Ruddy, I’m on PMI 24 10, and have been for several years. It seems like great value - I’ve a few minor conditions and the day to day expenses cover is very generous.

I’m wondering iif I’m missing something on the hospital cover side though, as there are lots of shortfalls. Blackrock, at least, seems to waive most of them, so the risk seems low (I’m in Dublin, 43).

I don’t mind taking the risk that if I unexpectedly need a new hip at age 50 I’ll have a 5k bill to pay. I am a bit worried there might be a whole class of cover missing though, where I could get a big shock and a 50k bill if something goes wrong, or even just no cover at all (other than cardiac 2 which is clearly omitted, and I’m ok with)

At 2k, the plan just feels suspiciously cheap for what is appears to cover! Many thanks for any advice - you’ve been a rockstar on this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

This is truly awful cover and way way over priced for the benefits. Your wife needs to switch and fast! If she wants to stay with Laya I would be looking at Inspire, much better cover and cheaper! For the kids you can get two kids free on flex 125 explore and you can put who ever needs most benefits on Inspire Plus.

if looking to move Irish Life best alternative with adult on Health Guide 2 via link for discount and once signed up contact Irish Life to add the kids on Benefit plan.

There is no benefit to you being on the same plan as your wife.

PMI 24 10 is VHI's best private room plan IMO. Most VHI plans with Private room coverage have a nightly excess which this one doesnt. There is a very large increase in the cost of this plan this year. So its not as good as it was in 2025. Still very good but not as good as it was. The alternative with VHI to reduce cost a little is PMI 48 10 but that has the Private Room nightly excess.

If you were open to a move Health Guide 3 is very very strong. Via the link here that's €1,970.50 versus €2,103 for PMI 24 10. Health Guide 3 has lower excess for day to day and for overnights in Private Hospitals. It also has a fixed co payment for ortho versus VHI's 20% shortfall which is likely to be more.

If anyone is with Irish Life Health on any of the following plans they should be having a look at potential alternatives:

    1. Any of the 4D Health plans (1-5)- Look at Health Guide, Better Select or Health Action plans to save for similar cover
    2. Optimise platinum- Look at Health Action 6
    3. Business Plan Complete, Business Plan Extra, any of the Health Plans, any of the Level 2 plans or Focus plans these are all poor value.

    Laya

Any plans with Company Care are usually bad value. Any plans that starts with Flex 125 or Essential Plus/Excess are all very poor value.

    VHI

Look to avoid plans like Advanced Care's, Premium Care's and Company plan Extra Level 2. VHI's best plans usually start with PMI as these are their corporate plans.

Currently between jobs, previous company subsidised the following plan - Company Plan Extra Level 2 - with VHI, stayed paying for it when I left however renewal quote for two adults and 2 kids is now coming in at €6,800, any recommendations for something that's better value? Way too many policies out there but I will start looking through them early next week, would be great tho if you could steer me towards a few that might suit.

    Thanks
