Two brilliant shows in 2 nights at the Ulster Hall. The Saw Doctors were on great form last night and tonight was the last show of the year for Ash who were joined for the encore by none other than Graham Coxon!

Moncrieff - Haven Hotel , Dunmore East , Waterford.

Such an incredible , emotional, evocative signer. 115 minutes in front of about 300 people in a venue a few minutes drive from his home. He played a 4 night run of gigs.

A great night, the crowd engaged mostly (apart from the usual cnuts that wont shut tf up).

This man should be bigger than Dermot Kennedy…

Drink The Sea gave value for money in the Button Factory last night. 2hrs 20mins, 26 songs and €26 ticket. Enjoyable for the most part, they could have skimmmed 30 minutes off the set and i'd have still been happy. Duke Garwood's vocals have always troubled me though as he uses the same phrasing and intonation as Mark Lanegan, so in my head i've always just replaced Duke's voice with Lanegans. Peter Buck's playing was very minimal but he did provide plenty of lovely, chiming Rickenbacker sounds. Found it a better live experience than on record. For me the most succesful songs were the ones that were slow, hypnotic and sounded like the Mark Lanegan Band. We got one cover each of Mad Season, REM, QOTSA and the Desert Sessions. Must admit i was surprised at how popular the Mad Season cover was! Not a band that ever meant anything to me. In saying that nor did REM or Queens for that matter.

Only dampener on the evening was when i asked someone to stop talking i got some choice words back and was told to move. It was only then i realised how pissed the two lads were and there was to be no reasoning with one of them who appeared to take my request very personally. He went to the bar and threw some more comments my way on his return. His mate wasn't arsed. Tbf, their chat all night was about the music coming from the stage but after putting up with it for most of the gig i couldn't take any more and had to say something. Christmas eh? Lots of tense people about. Myself included!

    Loved it.

Sound was fantastic. Real high level production all round. And bumped into The Edge a couple of times.

Isn’t it sad the amount of times we mention people talking during gigs. That’s an opportunity in the making for someone.

China Crisis superb in the Ambassador last night. Seriously under rated band. If you like intelligent pop/rock catch them next time. And Gary Daly is the ultimate showman and very funny

Drink the Sea miles better live than on record. Super gig, a fave of mine this year for sure.

Made it to the Gaza benefit gig in the Grand Social tonight but I was very late so missed Bold Love*, sadly, and only caught one song from Basht who sounded good

Cliffords though, were absolute class! I think I've got received cynicism about them, don't really know why, so I wasn't expecting much but I thought they were brilliant

Couple of other bands but nothing really stood out to me

*don't like to complain about a benefit gig, but if doors are at 7:30 having the band 4th of 7 on the poster on at 7:30 is a little annoying

Sunday saw a trip to the grand social for Merchy Christmas, I've worked every weekend this has been on for the last 3/4 years so was happy to finally get in to check it out, which of course meant it was the first year the scratch weren't there.....

All levels of Irish artists were represented and giving the music slots to lesser known artists was a genius idea, captive audience with cash on the hip and looking for a new favourite artist.

Finally got to see Ispini na hEireann as god intended, stuffed in the corner of a packed pub, really good trad without some bollox with 3 day old stew in his beard telling you to hoosh up now, just what I needed

Last night saw a trip to the **** box that is opium for spike and the gimme gimmes, I hate opium, but as a recent convert to ear plugs they made it slightly better, support was all girl punk band bad cop/bad cop, who are an enjoyable listen, Spike and the gimmes played an almost identical show to last year in the academy, but if you're going to this show for variety or deep cuts I have questions about you. A big shouty sing along on a Monday night.

Kneecap in the 3arena tonight for what should be my last gig of the year.

I was at Ed Sheeran in the 3 arena and the Coronas monday night in the olypmia.

While the Coronoas get lambasted, the lead singer has far more charismasand stage presence than Ed imho.

Also as a person who doesnt go to a lot of gigs, there seems to have been a massive increase in the amount of people yapping(shouting) during gigs.

Anyone know stage times for MayKay tomorrow? I'm heading to my 1st ever solo gig, after decades of going to gigs.

Meryl Streek was grand in the Academy tonight. First time i've seen him with a live drummer and it makes for a more satisfying experience than him running around the stage with zero means of production on display. I'm still not entirely convinced with him but i'd watch him at a festival no bother. Tbh it was the support act, The Chisel, that was the deciding factor in me going. Debut Irish appearance and they didn't disappoint, a proper Oi/Punk set. I hope they return.

That's me done for 2025 now. I'd like to cut down on gigs next year and travel instead but i probably won't!

Anyone at Kingfisher last night? What was the sound like for it in 3Arena.

    Going tonight. Can't wait.

Managed to get one of the last tickets to see Gurriers tonight in The Button Factory before they Sold Out. How lucky am I?

Major mosh outbreaks throughout, three crowd surfing band members (including a skirt-wearing bass player - a very brave thing to do IMHO), ear-blistering sound, crowd adoration and a Hillbillies Snack Box after a lovely walk home.

I say it so many times, we are so lucky here with our homegrown musical talent, we should count our blessings and go to more gigs at every opportunity!

Roll on tomorrow night, whatever it brings.

I went to see And So I Watch Yoiu From Afar play with the Ulster Orchestra in the Ulster Hall last night. What an incredibly special gig. Total one off. Tickets were 30 pounds which seems crazy cheap when theres around 80 musicians on stage. They played an after show in Voodoo which was probably on a par to be honest.

I thought Sabaton were my last gig of the year but I went to see an Organ concert in St. Francis Church last night and the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra at Tyn Church tonight, in Prague. Both were beautiful experiences, with exceptional musicianship and superb sopranos, and honestly, these shows were the highlights of my trip.

St. Francis has a 300 year old organ, which Mozart has played, while the organ at Tyn Church is even older.

Classical evening here too at St Patrick’s Cathedral to hear pianist Conor Lenihan play an hour of Beethoven, DeBussy, Chopin, Liszt and Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin.
Playing was flawless but not sure the acoustics in a cathedral is the best place to hear a piano recital.

Final two gigs of the year this week. Wednesday night in Whelans saw the newly slimmed down Mik Pyro. He's looking fantastic and sounding great as always.

Last night caught Gurriers in The Button Factory. Seathrun had implored me to go see them in Woodsies at Glasto, but I just couldn't get out of bed early enough, so this was my first time seeing them - and it certainly won't be the last! Great gig.. Atmosphere was electric. Perfect way to round off a great year of gigs! Happy Christmas, everyone! Hope the New Year brings many more great gigs for you all!

Maykay on Thursday night in Whelans was great. Lots of family and friends there so was a total love in. I loved her eponymous album this year, which formed the bulk of the tunes, but she played some FLA stuff too. A great night, from a star of Irish music.

Also saw Gurriers on Saturday. Brilliant gig and atmosphere. That was the last gig of 2025 for me so nice to go out on a high with a sold out gig of an Irish band.

It’s been a vintage year for live gigs.

Went to the last ever Tebi Rex gig last night at The Button Factory. Been a fan of the two lads since 2018 so was very bittersweet to know there won't be any more music from them.

Tebi Rex were prolific in just 10 years across 3 albums, an EP and many features. Notably having music featured in Normal People and an eir advert using their anthem 'I Never Got Off the Bus'.

They performed songs from across the decade and credit to them, they gave a platform to many other artists last night like Bobbi Arlo, Awkward Z, Greg Tisdall, Monjola, poet Natalya O'Flaherty and more. Each guest performed a song of their own and then a song that they collaborated on with Tebi Rex.

An emotional gig saw the energy grow and grow throughout the 2 hour show and it culminated in a furious finish complete with a mosh pit - no easy feat for an alt hip-hop duo from Kildare.

Was at Based festival in Button Factory this evening. An alcohol-free rock festival so it was mostly teenage bands making their debut performances and the audience were teens most probably enjoying their first gig experience. The old codgers like myself in the audience stuck to the back with the proud mums and dads while the teens were moshing like crazy at the front.

Eight bands in five and a half hours with an average five minutes turnaround between bands, it’s amazing what can be achieved when selling more booze isn’t the venue’s main priority. (Was at another festival last week in Workman’s when it was a ridiculous 30 minutes between acts - I left after two bands).

The bands today mostly played covers with a couple of originals each, we had to wait til the last three bands before the talent really started to shine through - Red Union, Nitrogen and worthy headliners Juggernaut but good luck and well done to them all.
