Venison roasting joint from Lidl

Have bought one of these venison roasting joints from Lidl with tomorrow's Sunday dinner in mind:

    image.png

Issue is, don't know the best way to cook it! No instructions/cooking guidance whatsoever on the packaging. Most Google results suggest slow cooking is the best way to do it, but then, is it really a 'roasting joint' in the first place?

Just wondering if anyone who's already cooked one of these can please advise on what worked (or even didn't work!) for them?

    TIA.

Have you checked the underside of the labelling?

Yes I have. And as I said, no instructions or guidance whatsoever….

That's strange. Think your best bet is Google 'cooking venison joint'.

Wild Irish Game are the suppliers

Slow roast for 4-5 hours at 120 degrees

Yes. That's exactly what I've done before posting here. Am just surprised to see that slow cooking seems to be the way in most recipes, and I for one wouldn't consider that roasting. Also, the picture in the brochure (that I put in above) looks more roasted than slow cooked. So, I remain confused as to what's the best thing to do with this lump of meat….

And I found that page while Googling, but I don't think that refers to this particular cut of meat, for a couple of reasons:

    • Ingredients list specifies 'venison roasting shoulder', which to the best of my knowledge, would be a much larger piece of meat altogether
    • Step 1 refers to 'take the thawed meat out of the package', and this wasn't sold frozen in the first place
    • Step 7 refers to how the meat 'should just fall away from the bone', and this is a boneless cut.

    But thanks for the help.

Was really wondering if anybody here might have tried anything with this particular Lidl piece of meat, but doesn't look like it…or not yet, anyway….

It's just a venison joint off the bone. Oven at 120-130 and roast for at least 2.5 hours. I don't know what weight you got but cook to your preferred taste.

Having consulted Delia Smith I think you should go for 'English pot roast' sear the meat first, remove then toss root veg in oil and juices and covering the lot and roasting slowly in a small amount of stock.

If you just roast more than likely will be very dry.

Here's the item on Lidl NI

    https://www.lidl-ni.co.uk/p/wild-game-fresh-venison-roasting-joint/p10014374

I'd be near certain it's venison shoulder as 800g fillet would be €30-€40.

Slow cook will give the best flavour and tenderness.

"Hi, I've googled suggestions on how to cook this but I'd like to get some actual personal recommendations, thanks. There were no instructions with the meat"

"Are you sure there were no instructions?"

    "Have you tried Google?"

How did it turn out, OP?

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

    Very nice :)

For anyone interested, or anyone looking for guidance in future:

    • Seared all sides of it in a pan
    • Threw it on top of a bed of carrots & onions in a pot. Used a red wine stock and filled it up to roughly halfway on the meat.
    • 150 degrees in the oven for approx. 1hr 45mins, and then let it rest for about 15 mins before eating.
    • Reckon 1hr 30mins would be enough, but Mrs Pierre here likes to be on the 'safe' side with cooking times! 🙄

    Sounds good.

One for Lidl or their suppliers to copy.
