It's almost certainly a glitch but some people are happier with a conspiracy theory.

    Something about sandwiches

I'm seeing a few speakers over the last while in the bargains thread. Here's a question:

Does anyone know of some dampening material i can put underneath the speaker so the bass doesn't travel through the house?

For example, if i have a speaker on the floor in the corner of a room upstairs, how do i stop the bass being heard downstairs? I've seen those foam wall pads on Amazon but they're too big for these speakers. They'd need to be about the size of a coaster.

It's frustrating try to get anything from customer service. They just say "oh no that's what it is, you get the deposit back". So I have to push and ask what's changed since saturday explaining that the Irish VAT is already calculated and on orders under €150 there shouldn't be an other duty. The supervisor then just coped a spiel from the terms….I asked to speak to somebody who knows and understands VAT and customs law…my case is passed on to another team and I'll get a response in 48 hours….

Had the same response all I got back was an email with a links to all their policies. Followed by a how did we do email, needless to say it didn't get a glowing reply.

Wake me up when it's all over.

yeah it's very frustrating as it's quite a big deal, potentially losing a lot of business. Surely if multiple people are complaining they should realised it's an issue. were you able to reply to that email? They don't seem to complrehend the "What has changed since saturday" part of the question!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=G202016890 That page should be the way to get to the explanation of VAT etc ( paragraph 5) Good luck. I have zero trust in Amazon these days.

Mercusys MR80X Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 gigabit router lowest ever price again. 29.99 GBP delivered to UK address, 30.74 to Irish address.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09X6XHD6Q

Does anybody know if this can be used instead of the standard EIR/Virgin broadband routers?

You could plug it via ethernet cable to the VM/Eir box then switch off the wifi from the ISP box.

If you're talking about 1:1 replacement; the answer is no.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,119 ✭✭✭daheff

yeah i was hoping for a 1:1 replacement. dont have room for 2 boxes where the router is currently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,981 ✭✭✭mp3ireland2

No thats the generic responses i get from customer service. Nothing changed on those terms on Saturday when the deposits started appearing. For goods under €150 there's no customs duty, so they should not be charging a deposit. They charge VAT at the irish rate of 23% so there's no further Tax or duties on items they sell. That's how it's been working for years. I think there has been a coding glitch. Off the phone with a guy from amazon who rang, he was helpful but not a tax expert. I sent him on the link showing the €150 reference on the Irish revenue site. As a UK prime customer it's a bit of a faff. Thankfully had Christmas shopping done.

Is that still the case with fibre though (not sure if the OP has fibre or talking about DSL)? My fibre connection has the termination box feeding into the "modem" from which it's just a straight ethernet connection to the Sky router. I'm not sure if that does anything special - the DSL routers had to deal with DSL signalling.

I'll hold my hands up and say it's not something I've tried as my internal network (which needs some simplification) means I usually just plug the providers box in and WiFi remains handled by Unifi access points.

To come back to the OP, Mercusys gear usually gets decent reviews (it's the budget brand for TP-Link)

Came here to ask the same thing.

Eir fibre, box on the wall taking the signal in, then the Eir modem attached to that via ethernet. Plus out the Eir box and in the new one? Rename it to the old name, and everything automatically reconnects?

so based on my experiences, if you have fibre broadband without phone it’s very easy to switch out routers. You may need to request credentials from your provider but it’s a relatively simple process. Lots of posts elsewhere about this. With phone service it can be different and would depend on the info your provider is willing to give (Vodafone wouldn’t for me) and the functionality of the replacement router.

I don’t think the mercusys is an amazing deal or anything but it’d probably be better then the eir or Vodafone provided rubbish.

Move to digiweb fibre. Get a great AX router (fritz!box) as part of sign up and no yearly price increases tracking the CPI.

They don't give the fritzboxes anymore. They give a cheaper Huawei one now.

If you get a replacement item sent out but do not send back the original do they charge you what it originally cost or what it currently costs? Waiting on a replacement for something ordered on Black Friday and thinking I might actually want two now (replacement was for a superficial thing). Fair price difference to order it new now.

You get charged the original order cost

Just going back to the import fees deposit conversation, I placed an order for multiple items for approx 200 GBP and was charged a chunk for import fees, the majority of the order landed today and my Revolut payment was reduced by 35 euro and the order shows a lot less on import fees now.

So it looks like they had some bug and are correcting it on delivery

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,629 ✭✭✭SourSessions

I also just ordered a printer over £150 and there was no import fee deposit whatsoever.

I just see almost everything on amazon uk and ie has an earliest arrival time of the 28th of December. Earlier on today nearly everything was the 22nd/23rd. Are they just covering themselves ? Had a few things in my basket but unsure whether to buy them now if they wont arrive until after christmas

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 10,271 ✭✭✭✭mik_da_man

Personally I wouldn't chance it now if it's for Christmas, if it wasn't packed and sent today you couldn't be sure when it will land

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,681 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

Have just spent an hour with three chat agents in relation to an item that was sent back as it broke. There was an approx 100 charge on the original order for import fees. I had received a refund minus that amount. They were insisting that it was a shipping charge and non-refundable. Sorted now thankfully, but something to be aware of and to check if returning anything for a refund.

ordered one of the sound bars from amazon Spain a couple of weeks back . I didn’t really need it for Christmas would have been nice to get it but it’s on a tour of Spain and France 3 stops in Spain on second stop off in France, I presume it has to get to U.K. before Ireland.
Original delivery was 20th then 23rd and now 24th which I can’t see happening.

Ive an item that is currently doing laps of the country. It's coming with UPS, it has gone from Finglas to Galway and back to Finglas 3 times since Monday. It's an XL dog crate too, so would be a pain in the arse to load/unload.

What's worse is I only live about 3 miles from the m6, so it's been within 3 miles of my house 6 times so far this week 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,919 ✭✭✭✭con747

I know the feeling, I live in a rural area that has 3 county borders and the main town is split between two different counties so my UPS deliveries always go from Finglas to Roscommon back to Finglas and then updated to wrong address and sent to Santry and finally gets delivered.

A google search by the eircode drops you at my house but it's all automated now so the computer sees it as me living in a different county and sends the parcel there before it gets redirected to where it came from to send it back out to the correct address.

Don't expect anything from life, just be grateful to be alive.

almost the exact same, except I need it to go to Roscommon 😅

We call it the UPS dance, but it normally only happens once.

It seems absolutely crazy to me that a company who's job is to deliver stuff doesn't have a system in place to mark an address as "next time we see this eircode, send it to Roscommon" for their sake even!

Thankfully no big deal, if it was kids present I'd be bricking it, but the dog will just have to squeeze into the smaller one for a while more 😅
