We'll be missing 2 of our better players this season for 3 of those 4 games though. I'd have to take that into account.

One thing that really doesn't surprise me is that a 20 year CM that the manager has made clear he doesn't rate, hasn't been pulling up trees in his 12 minute cameo appearances.

Like Nicky Butt said, its a real shame that Mainoo has lost a year of development at a pivotal age/time in a players career.

Hopefully there is a possibility he can go on loan in January.

What's funny enough to me is that if you look at the underlying data United are actually comparable with Arsenal and City right now, sitting 3rd in the expected points.

I'm not a massive fan of pure data driven metrics for obvious reasons but it is interesting and an indicator we are moving in the right direction, and something I can see the hierarchy at United holding a lot of stock in. That type of analysis. Our issues tend to stem from a lack of intensity and urgency on the ball, anyone who watches games can tell you that. Of course if you don't watch games you just focus on "ThE SYstEm" because they have no idea the system changes throughout the match quite often and certainly in and out of possession. So I understand the data only takes you so far and the eye test needs to get you the rest of the way.

"People say ‘go with the flow’ but do you know what goes with the flow? Dead fish."

I'm not a big fan of our current midfield, under Amorim.

But if we're being honest, Mainoo's performance levels had already dropped off before Amorim arrived. He certainly lacks the kind of athleticism needed to be one of the two CMs playing in this system. Obviously the coach hasn't seen enough in training to convince him Mainoo can do it.

I think Mainoo's future at Utd is very much tied to Amorim's.

Still a lot of games between now and next Summer and I would say the Coach is really not guaranteed to still be there in 6/7 months time….if we see many repeats of the Everton & West Ham games.

The cry out for Mainoo to start reminds me of that cry out yonks ago when half of Ireland wanted Andy Reid to start when he wasn't up to much.

Different circumstances I know, Mainoo is a youngster still from the academy but the Andy Reid situation always comes to mind.

I think we need a different type of midfielder to strengthen what we have...and get Sesko firing

Ha, I was on the Andy Reid side of that divide too!

Nice parellels with the stubbornness and inflexibilty of Trap too!

Tbf Mainoo looked excellent in 23-24, and played for England in the euros. I totally agree he has dropped off, but also hasn't had a decent run and probably feels the manager doesn't rate him which can't be helping him confidence-wise. Some people are talking about him like he is Championship level.

Its not even a case of "This is the answer to all problems he needs to play".

Its "We have a great midfield prospect and a huge problem in midfield, why not try and do something with him…".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,144 ✭✭✭jayo44

Maybe he has and Mainoo hasn't responded. He could of given him a set of training targets and Mainoo didn't hit them.

We don't know but I think amorim has shown that he will give anyone a chance so long as he sees it in training so there's something up behind closed doors.

Heaven was an 18 year old we signed for fek all money and he gave him chances straight away because he liked him on training. Chido obi was same last year he gave him chances, this year Chido has gone of the boil for whatever reason but he never showed much at senior level either.

One thing I dislike is that there is now a narrative developing that Mainoo must be a problem behind the scenes. Another Garnacho, too big for his boots, thinks he made it etc etc. You can see that seeping in now.

Maybe the manager just isn't good at developing players.

Mainoo, Heaven, Chido Obi, 3 highly promising kids, how are they all getting on these days? How is Yorro's form? How has Dorgu come on since signing?

I was wondering about this in an exchange of posts with someone on here a couple of days ago…. I honestly don’t think Amorim is leaving Mainoo out based on his ability or him not suiting the “system “ ( as everyone keeps calling it) alone …given our issues in midfield there must be issues with his training or attitude, I don’t know obviously but I think there’s more to this than we know.

He has tried him there loads of times, this season and last. He doesn't do the things required of a CM in a 2 man midfield very well. He was brought on when we were 3-0 up v Brighton and it ended up at 3-2 shortly after. I can't see him succeeding in this system so he'll be sold if Amorim is still here in the Summer, which is a big if.

Fair enough…. ( you seem to be very angry)

I bet if you offered most United fans 8 points out of those four games right now they’d take your hand off.

Of course I’d love to take more and will be delighted if it happens but an average of two points per game gets you top four easily.

Mainoo is great in a 3 man midfield, he needs better runners beside him, he's slow, runs out of gas early and doesn't look all that physical.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,621 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

What about responding to the point about developing him, not merely expecting him perform and if he isn't great in 12 minutes here and there - sell him.

Are we just not going to develop players anymore, especially local players?

The point was made that this is a transitional period and if Amorim's job is really safe, he needs to be blooding talented young players, not running Bruno and Casemiro into the ground. Wouldn't be surprised if Casemiro drops off rapidly now for a mid season break, if wants to ramp up again for the world cup. There's no way he's in top physical shape in the summer if he plays almost every minute in a midfield 2 with Bruno this season.

What reports are you seeing, theres been absolutely no reports or any talk of that narrative with Mainoo that ive seen. If anything, he's been the quite professional.

Has obviously said to his agent he wants to get more game time, either on loan for 6 months or if the club approve, a sale.

He or anyone at the club has not come out and made anything abouthilany agenda.

Its been the media blowing it up because of his electric start to his career, the euros etc.

Kid is only 20, and has a massive carrer ahead of him. Be it at utd or not remains to be seen.

Zero narrative and tbh shouldn't be mentioned the same way as Garna ( not that I have anything against him either but two completely different situations).

Heaven is getting minutes slowly, again, young lad only joined.

Chido is 17/18, hardly a professional pro player yet.

These kids need time and not be thrusted in to the first team just because we've had bad results.

Developing players is fine if they broadly fit the requirements of the position in the system. Unfortunately Mainoo's profile doesn't appear to fit.

Two goals for him at HT this evening.… That was kinda evanevitable, should have backed the hat trick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,049 ✭✭✭Robson99

Not angry at all. Yup 2 points per game is great going, but on the flip side 1 point out of 6 from Everton [ 10 men ] and WH at home is shocking. The pressure is now on to win those 3 home games to keep in the chase for top 4. I wouldn't be betting on us to do so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,354 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

Thats the point, there are no reports, I haven't heard a peep from the player myself. And yet on threads like this you are starting to see comments like:

given our issues in midfield there must be issues with his training or attitude, I don’t know obviously but I think there’s more to this than we know

There are people that were giving him grief for wanting to get out on loan and how that was obviously calculated to leave the club short at the end of the window, as opposed to a kid reading the room and seeing that the manager clearly doesn't want him.

Maybe he simply isn't good enough, or maybe the manager has it wrong, there doesn't really need to be a third option.

So what middle of the park player should we bring in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭17togo

What do ye make of these links to a short term Sergio Ramos deal?! Seems to be more than just rumours. If it's not for too much money and specifically till the end of the season, might be useful to help the defence get a bit more organised, bite and shithousery. Himself and Martinez in defence would make for a fun watch, would also get scousers wound up to see him playing against them again! 😂

Once it doesn't affect any chance of us sorting out midfield in January I don't see any harm in it and could be helpful to the younger defenders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭GolfPar

Should definitely sign him. Amorim would be able to make 3 centre.half substitutions every game then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,354 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

We have 2 attackers going to AFCON. We need wing backs and most definitely need midfielders. A back up striker would be good. We have Martinez back and needing minutes, Maguire due back in a week.

    Better get another CB.

Damn, took me a sec to recognise Andrei here!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭Charlie69

It’s hardly a “narrative “ just because an anonymous nobody (me) on the internet is wondering if there’s something else going on.

And that’s all it is…. me wondering. A couple of days ago I literally posted that I hadn’t heard anything reported in relation to Mainoo having disciplinary issues and asked the question as to whether or not anyone on here had heard anything. I am still wondering though if his application to training is everything that the manager expects of him but that’s all it is … me wondering…. ( he may well be a model professional) no need to get upset about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭Charlie69

Maybe but seven points from those three home games would still be a very good return.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,553 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Ramos a decade ago would have been great. I guess it's just to replace Evans as the veteran CB that (hopefully) doesn't play?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,144 ✭✭✭jayo44

I think the problem here is same as with alot of opinions online. You can't be balanced, if you are not completely Amorim out then you must be amorim in, If you aren't completely against Amorim not playing Mainoo then your issue is with Mainoo.

No balance, no in between it's either happy or full on disaster situations.

That's why I said once it doesn't affect us sorting out the midfield. I'm more asking what do people think of it in isolation as a potential move.
