    CORECT !

    Refunds,discounts,money back… let's hit them in the pocket ! ;)

I spent too much time on them over the summer:like seven different 10GB cards, optical cables, patches, switches, SFPs,enough.

Then, once with WX and the new "Digital Prison W11", decided to improve my security & privacy.

Running protection and i'm confident it slows down the WAN speeds downwards toward the local network:

IDS/IPS, CyberGateway, DNS filtering, wireguard, portmaster, AV,all slowing down traffic…secure compromise.

Lodge the complaint and mention comreg, take it from there. I'm 100% sure they are watching this thread and other on the likes of Reddit and by now they know we have evidence of what the sales team said at the time of purchases and still are saying today.

@ Virgin … Hello, I've contacted a few Tech journalist, one of whom owes me a favour :-) Come clean to your customers, is this decision forced by an infrastuture issue or is it a corporate mis-step ? Your highly promoted 5Gig package was amazing, your crippled one not so much. Get your head out of the sand admit there is a problem/issue or deliberate change. Offer a reasonable solution/compensation to those who are affected. I don't think Tony will appreciate getting questions refered to him from some gobshite in Patrick O'Donovan Department when the PQ's start coming in. Get it sorted. Thanks in advance

I was able to lodge a complaint with comreg without a complaint to VM. I just informed them that I made my complaint last week but that VM never lodged it as an official complaint. And that currently I had no access to their online chat(disconnected me saying they were too busy)/online complaint form (wouldn't load) and that after an hour on hold that I gave up trying to verbally give the official complaint…. after that they said they'd accept the complaint. They said the fact 500Mb or 10% upload isn't specified in writing anywhere that they might be limited as to what they can do. They still said its very underhanded to have their sales team advertise 500Mb over the phone when its just not available but he'd have to do more research to see what options there are for us since its not in writing anywhere.

I could see this gaining some traction considering the minister is currently trying to get new consumer rights for broadband customers.

Consumer win for me at least - Looking like mine is restored - https://www.speedtest.net/result/18524654698

Real world uploads which crawled to just 24Mb are back up to 60Mb which is what I require.

I've no doubt if things hadn't of been noticed, if certain people had not been contacted it would have silently been left as it was.

Lets see you all have been restored and what they offer new customers going forward.

    back to 550…Confirmed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,664 ✭✭✭Thor

Same. Back to 500. Just happened to run test.

Thought it was **** download speed for a second.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 SizzleQuote

Mine also back to 500. Downloads got down though - around 3300-3900 among multiple tests. Likely due to time of the day.

    Well done community!

Yes back at 500 here also.

Can I ask that consider documenting the entire process and starting a thread about it on here? There's going to be more and more cases of people being moved off DOCSIS onto VM's fibre, and they won't get proper ONTs. And the more technically capable people such as myself would find a guide for this useful over the coming years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,446 ✭✭✭NotShero

That's basically what this thread has been, you can go back to the start to see people going through the process.

You can follow this guide -

    https://fttppro.co.uk/replacing-the-hub-5x-with-a-was-110-sfp-module-on-virgin-medias-xgs-pon-broadband/

Then on your router - IPoE/Dynamic IP/DHCP as the connection type. VLAN ID 10 in VLAN/IPTV settings. Clone the MAC address of the Hub 5x to your router.

But in his case he's already tried that and had it fail. There can be more to learn from an example where things have gone wrong rather than smoothly according to a guide.

Just a reminder, you can switch to Sky or Vodafone through Virgin FTTP for an ordinary ONT to be installed.

I'm still not completely sure if you keep using the ONT if you switch back to Virgin. They would presumably send out the ethernet WAN version of the Hub 5x, like they do for SIRO & NBI.

I'l give it a go tomorrow,as im getting another line installed by Vodafone,2gb dl and have time to play with the VM SPF. Thanks for guide... ;)

    Hi
I'm currently on Vodafone over Virgin Media fibre.

I will be switching to Virgin Media proper as soon as my current contract is over and this place seems to most 5gbit users, so I would like to ask for some info …

Any of you willing to run bufferbloat test, if possible would be nice to get results from both people using VM 5x and also SFP ONU (if you can also say which router)?

I'm currently using X-ONU-SFPP, with VyOS in a VM, on KVM. I get 1080mbit down and 108mbit up on 1G service, but I'm using CAKE to trade a bit of bandwidth for more responsive service.

    waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat

Here is my result, please share yours if you can.

    Dan

Few things to consider with this… I have a server running that will use up some bandwidth. I also use a UDM Pro with IPS/IDS set at max… This drops the download speeds significantly.

I can tell you that I don't find this test to be a good representation of buffer bloat… but maybe I just found a strange use case. I have VPN connections running on my line also (confined to specific docker containers). They are split tunnelling though so not all traffic is using the VPN. When the VPN is maxed out, roughly 300Mb download, I get colossal buffer bloat. My pings will go insane if I try to game while my VPN is under heavy use. It doesnt make sense to me why it works that way since my normal use traffic should not be going through the VPN. But I mitigate this by limiting the speeds on my VPN. This probably isnt something you will ever experience but just wanted to share just in case.

I also use VPN, both directions … containers downloading and have road warrior clients connecting in to the network. (both are Wireguard)

Regular traffic uses native WAN gateway.

I do not have inline scans like you do.

Without SQM (CAKE in my case) I could definitely tell when something else was happening on the network, this was all ironed out and you can be downloading full speed and be in the video meeting at the same time without degrading voice/video quality.

I'm looking forward to Virgin Media since PPPoE on Vodafone and in general is not great experience, it is basically a single core protocol and with high speeds you need to have a very fast single core performance to use it and then on top of it you get VPN CPU penalty …

I used to use a passive x86 small computer and OPNsense when I was on 500M DOCSIS with VM, but that had to be replaced when I got fibre and PPPoE and 1G with it.

I appreciate your reply and I will be following this thread carefully.

    Regards,

    Dan

What firmware is on your X-ONU-SFPP? Is it 8311?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 danij3l

    using 8311 firmware

I ordered Virgin 5Gbps through a Switcher.ie promo, it's getting installed tomorrow. During the Switcher process, I checked a box that said I wanted an installer to come. It was a €50 charge, but I thought it was necessary because VM has never installed an ONT of their own at my house.

I currently have a Vodafone 2Gig connection using Virgin's network.

Two questions, if anyone knows the answers:

    1. I'm not sure if Virgin will be installing something else, or if they can reuse Vodafone's install since it's on their network?
    2. I use a Unifi Dream Wall in PPPoE mode to bypass the need for Vodafone's router. Can I do something like this on Virgin and skip using their router?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,446 ✭✭✭NotShero

If you had ordered Virgin through Virgin FTTP first, then you wouldn't have had an ONT installed and you'd be given the integrated ONT Hub 5x. But you've gone with Vodafone, so an external ONT is installed.

I'd be interested to see whether you're given the ethernet WAN version of the Hub 5x or if they revert back to the integrated ONT Hub 5x.

If the ONT is not removed by the engineer, you'll be able to easily connect your router to it and use IPoE, VLAN ID 10 and you'll need to clone the MAC address of the Hub 5x to your router.

It could be Vodafone through SIRO or OpenEir. Are you sure it's Vodafone through Virgin FTTP -

I'm sure it's on Virgin. When I ordered it, the 2Gig was only available at my home through Virgin. OpenEir and Siro only have 1Gig at my address

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,446 ✭✭✭NotShero

Okay yeah, there hasn't been any posts afaik from people going to Virgin after coming from Vodafone/Sky through Virgin FTTP.

    It will either be,

Virgin ONT stays in place, ethernet WAN Hub 5x is supplied (This is supplied with Virgin through SIRO/NBI)

Virgin ONT is removed, integrated ONT Hub 5x is supplied

Try and push to keep the ONT, as you'd need to get a WAS-110/X-ONU-SFPP otherwise to remove the Hub 5x and there's no "modem mode" and there's CGNAT/DS-Lite.

I’ll try to push to keep it, though I suspect they will say they need to install whatever it is they have in the truck at the time.

Is there a specific model number or something that I should ask, or will they know what I mean by Ethernet WAN 5x hub? I am not super internet literate even though I have a UniFi system lol.

Here’s what I have currently with the Vodafone 2Gig install. It’s a Nokia XS-010X-Q ONT with 10Gig Ethernet port:

You just want them to not remove the ONT, just say you want to continue using the ONT. Virgin have a Hub 5x that connects to an ordinary ONT with ethernet - Fibre ONT Type 1 in the below link.

    https://www.virginmedia.ie/customer-support/support-by-products/broadband/Fibremodem/

There's only the router to install either way, they'll just remove the ONT and connect the fibre directly to the Hub 5x if not - Fibre ONT Type 2. Let us know how ye get on!
