Your a merc dealer. You need to sell x amount of cars to retain your volume discounts. Your going to miss the deadline, it's crunch time.

You buy and register a bunch of cars to meet that number. They sit on the lot, no interest. Now you have a loan or lots of capital tied up in these cars, you need them gone.

If you sell those cars on your lot, at or near cost price or even taking a hit on them, you might piss off your existing customers who paid normal retail for their cars. And they might be less inclined to buy from you or expect a better price in the future. A lot of car brands like mercs rely on repeat customers, it's probably a large part of the decision here.

So you send them to a auction. They are not linked directly back to you, so no pissed off customers. And to be honest, auction prices here are a bit nuts. They might even make more from people who think they are getting a good price then selling them discount on the lot.

Also, those electric mercs are depreciating like a stone. It's bad enough to have fears over extremely large repair bills for things like battery packs, but those Mercedes electric repair costs are allegedly eye watering.

Are the Merc warranty repairs in Ireland capped to the market value of the car like in some European countries? Seen as the list price of packs can be eye watering that may affect the repairs should a pack need to be replaced.

    Not from the manufacturer.
You could in theory have a €30k car requiring a €30k battery replacement (I know that figure is unrealistic) under warranty and the OEM will replace the battery. The manufacturer cannot write off your car based on an OEM failure under warranty. (Not without offering you a payout to buy the car anyway).

Most likely the manufacturer would buy back the car in such a circumstance. Toyota did it many years ago with KP60 Starlets that had an issue with the rear axle. Many ended up living a second life on Bere Island until the tin worm got them which didn’t take long.

Nowadays I’d fear the cost would be too much IMO. But not beyond possible I suppose.

What sort of money will the mercs go for €50/60k?? Not a very desirable motor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,205 ✭✭✭joe1303l

I’m guessing €15K off list price whatever that is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,022 ✭✭✭✭Cuddlesworth

85 to 95k, few 2025's around 65k, it seems like the dealers are trying to offload them. Just general prices without really looking at the spec.

They seem to loose about 20k a year in depreciation. Seems like some 2023's could go off the lot for 40k. Although with new cars going for 65, why bother.

Not sure if this is normal depreciation for these types of cars. Seems harsh.

List price is over €100k and the cheapest 2025 on DoneDeal is €80k.. You are getting mixed up with the saloon version which is cheaper

What EVs are overpriced at current retail would be a good thread actually, whatever your views on the ix3, it's price point is making a lot of stuff look expensive, anyone who bought a q6 or A6 etron won't like Audi's response 😕

within days was rescinded and the old regime of 3 months was reinstated.VRT employee confirmed this to me in

    the office on Friday,

Thanks for sharing, but obviously not very reliable info. Is it too much to ask for these rules to be made public? Not a rant at you obviously!

Now Unkel you know as well as me that they will never make it public, but as the old saying goes

you can take it to the bank.

    Post #5508 https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058056834/importing-from-the-uk-definitive-guide-q-and-a#latest

    By @Gumbo Just to update.
Im just out of VRT in Ballymun.
3 months is the reasonable period. Revenue rolled back on the 6 month rule and issued the guidance to VRT staff on 3rd December.

The 6 month rule was in place for a few days!

Gumbo, only clarified now not last week.

I had it clarified to me in person last Friday. As per my post on the 5th (last week) 👍

Revenue won’t even give you a straight up answer to your face or by email. I have it in writing that the reasonable period is subjective and is on a case by case basis.

It should be clear as it’s a customs matter so shouldn’t be any room for subjectivity.

Maybe it depends on the contents of the brown envelope. I had hoped Ireland had left these banana republic antics behind half a generation ago…

This exactly. Drop the subjective BS which can be used as a stick when suits.

Imagine the craic if the tobacco and alcohol limits were not set. What’s reasonable for some is enough to fill the car boot. They’ve clarified the limits in the last week and say that anything over the limit will result in the limit being zero and all your smokes and drinks will be confiscated.

They said it’s to rule out circumnavigation of the customs process and to allow for abnormal situations, forced sales etc

For the moment anyway, it’s 3 months.

The whole NI rule is set up exactly to circumnavigate the customs processes😂

I'd say a lot of money is being made in NI on this legal smuggling business…

The whole NI rule is set up exactly to circumnavigate the customs processes😂

If we weren't being illegally charged VRT and then being shafted for customs and VAT, there would be a lot less circumnavigating. This is an area where the EU needs to drill Ireland hard. When the fine is less than the gain, where is the disincentive? It's like not paying motor tax and the max fine being €20 for the year and a snotty letter.

I'd say a lot of money is being made in NI on this legal smuggling business…

Absolutely. It's a buoy for NI dealers and private sellers. There's also friends, relatives and just some decent folk in NI willing to help out us out of a hole.

I was considering picking this up for my Bro or FiL, but it's too close to Christmas to be spending a couple of grand on something I don't personally need. Just saw it popping up today.

2015 Leaf with 11 bars for 2k. Needs a serious bang of a hoover!
