This is a problem that has or allowed to develop from the biggest war in Europe since ww11

The drones are similar to previously reportes around europe and by very experienced operators possibly originate from a ship well outside our 12 mile limit.

Their survival is paramount so they cannot be identified they are apped at evading.

Interception is made difficult by their size and movability.

There was a possible leak in security knowing arrival time so it could be very embarrassing if this had tried to hit the plane.

Wake up call for our lack of defence we need a ship or 2 with modern anti air detection with systems for interception possible upgrade or new which ever costs less

Lasers are less effective in cloudy or fog and not yet deployed unless with other systems.

If an modern day frigate similar to the French one to be used during our EU presidency the aggressor would not have chanced this act.

Our flight path to Dublin is open to this targeted operation and now we have to address it.

I disagree. If you read my proposal you will see that I propose doing patrols and intelligence with drones. We don't need fighter jets to do patrols.

Nor do you need large vessels with large crews burning 1000 litres of diesel an hour to patrol the sea. A few long endurance UAVs would do the job. And if any interception of a vessel is needed, then the small lightly armed go-fast-boats or helicopters can swoop out and fo that.

Long endurance drones with advanced sensors make traditional aircraft and ships obsolete for patrols.

Well then Europe can go and defend it if the need arises.

Someome said we are freeloading our air and naval defence off of the UK and EU. Yeah. Good. It means we are getting it for free and don't have to pay for it, organize it, or otherwise have to bear any of the headache and bother of doing it ourselves.

Long live the freeloading I say, it is a bargain.

And the EU and UK would never pull out and leave it totally undefended for an adversary to get a foothold into. Why would they? It is not in their interest to do so? We are luckily well placed to be able to piggyback on their defence.

So you think people should relish the idea of joining a "real" military so they can have the delight of getting shot or blown up, ending up dead or worse, maimed and severly disabled for life?

I'm sure the the ukrainians are loving it.

Also genuinely spare a thought for the hundreds and thousands of russians being marched out every single day to absorb bullets in the meatgrinder. A lot of the time the are hoodwinked or intimidated into it, or were unlucky enough to not get out before getting conscripted.

I think the best defence against this type of thing is to keep our nose out of international wars and geopolitics and don't be inviting over people who would effectively be putting a target mark on the country.

I have al sympathy for Ukraine, but Ireland isn't a global power and should stop trying to pretend it is. Keep out of all of this stuff. Keep out of anything to do with Ukraine, gaza, israel, the middle east or any other international clusterfúçk. Stop doing UN missions. Don't worry world won't fall apart because of Ireland's absence, someone else will be compelled to step in to do peacekeeping.

Sure Iceland has no army, no air force and no navy. They just have police and a coast guard. They are doing grand and they are dead right.

i think the announcer was lying to you? or am i reading you right?

it's 530km from galway bay to brize norton. to do that in a minute would require them to have flown at about mach 50.

In honesty there's not much that could be safely done in short term ,

Something like a skynex mounted on the back of a patrol ship , would do it , but obviously you couldnt fire in direction of the shore , bullets do t just go up ..

Heavy duty jamming is obviously possible, but the airport and anyone else with radio transmitters / receivers would freak out ..

Soon it'll be buying interceptor drones ,

But they're not exactly available in numbers at the moment..

Absolutely. If you go back through the years it is always the poorer and least educated of society who are sent to be slaughtered in the front line whether that's a Tommy from Sunderland, Sergey from Tolyatti or a bible toting hillbilly from the USA. Sure they will showcase the token royal like prince Harry and of course bow their heads in memory of the fallen but the certainty is that those in high elitist places don't give a f**k about these wretches. The most recent gratuitous insult to these misfortunes was when the commander in chiefs, who of course will never suffer a scratch ,started donning combat fatigues with their surname stitched on the front, getting all down and homey with the yokels, BUSH was the first I noticed doing this. So in an era when a college graduate in a pencil skirt can click on a laptop and detonate a bomb 2000 miles away we need to completely rethink our approach to our defence forces.

Aside from the faster than light travel, Lets not worry about the fact that Salhill airshow ceased in 2007, the Red Arrows last performed there at 2006. Not exactly a few years ago. They were based at RAF Scampton at the time, nowhere near Brize Norton. If they needed fuel then surely RAF Valley there at Holyhead would have been the better option.

Pretty sure they always do an announcement like that. I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously.

Also, they are based out of RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, not Brize Norton.

The current RAF interceptors are Typhoons (Eurofighter) and I think the nearest are 1Sqn out of Lossiemouth in Scotland. They could be here pretty quickly though; they're on QRA which is 15 mins readiness.

Iceland is a founding member of NATO and is protected through a 1951 bilateral defense agreement with the US because of its strategic location.

Yes you want to look the other way but we are under threat and must be able to protect our economy primary protected radar NOW.

Depending on which report was accurate the ship that was hovered over was far beyond the range of shore. In Ukraine they are taking out drones with assault rifles and shogun's with anti drone rounds. Those rounds aren't going very far at all. The counter to jamming is optical cable guided drones.

It doesn't seem they were prepared with any sort of rules of engagement for drones.

You'd want to be some shot to hit a drone with a rifle or light machine gun , especially from a moving ship ,

Shotguns are last ditch very short range weapons ,for when a drone is coming at you .. even with an automatic shotgun you wouldn't get very many rounds off ..

A lot depends on the type and size of the drones - unlikely that they were fibre-optic controlled , no need to be really, unless the jamming is heavy ( and it wasn't )

Somewheee mentioned that the drones were in the air for a couple of hours - which seems , extreme,

They also were running lights on , again odd , would have thought they'd try conserve energy.

The lights were on deliberately, let them see we're here what you going to do about it!

They have anti drone fragmentation rounds for shogun's and assault rifles. You could be half blind and hit them.

You either learn from Ukraine or stay stuck in the past.

Just like AA from the the last 100yrs Ukraine use layered defenses. Missiles, larger radar controlled guns down to medium calibre down to small calibre at the infantry squad level. I think they are looking at grenade rounds as well like giant buckshot.

Same lessons seem to relearnt after every conflict. The concept of Canister rounds has been around since artillery was invented.

The Irish Vessels have a 0.5 and GPMG and small arms. Yes they are not currently trained in their use against drones. Or have any standing orders around drones. But lessons have to be learnt from this and use the equipment we have and see what others are doing.

Most navies are struggling to deal with the drone threat. It's not any criticism of Irish Navy that they are in the same boat. They need to be supported and encouraged to adapt.

In which case, why even bother to be a sovereign nation anymore?

The way I see it, we have the best of all worlds. Free defence due to being luckily located right in the middle of NATO, and we don't have to pay one iota for it or contribute in any way with personnel or money.

I think we're on the the pigs back. Nato would not just pull out and leave a gaping hole around Ireland just because we won't play the game with them.

I think it's a master stroke in cute hoorism.

Firstly le me put my cards on the table - I think being a soldier is the lowest form of human existence. The thought that a mother would bring a child into this world, nourish & nurture him/her just to grow up with one ambition - to kill another mothers son ….and the more of them the better.

I know that's very simplistic and our little troubled planet is somewhat more complicated - but the above is the essence of a soldier.

But in relation to our Dad's army and their lack of practical experience as killing machines. Imagine a young lad whose dream is to be a motor mechanic. He completes all the required training and courses and eventually becomes a fully qualified motor mechanic. Then every morning Monday to Friday day after day week after week, year after year he pulls on his overalls, PPE etc. but never ever gets to work on a vehicle of any description or put his skills into practice. The only consolation a few euros that's falling into his bank account every Friday. A sure recipe to turn a good decent person with a work ethic into a idler, loafer, indolent, slothful, lazy waster.

We should be talking to Ukraine on how to shoot them down. They have loads of experience in this.

Heard on the radio today that drones become outdated after about 3 weeks as the other side finds countermeasures. We need someone looking at this full time, not ad hoc.
