Have Aer Lingus changed the rules about online check in ? Used to be that you could pick some of the seats without paying now it seems you have to select random seat selection in order not to pay seat fees.

Another step on the journey to becoming Ryanair without the low fares and punctuality….

I develop Superior Solitaire when I'm not procrastinating on boards.ie.

A portion of seats are selectable for free, once they are taken you can

    1. Pay to select a seat
    2. Be assigned at random

The system will try to seat all on a booking together

So check in when check in opens, so on short haul that will put you somewhere behind row 10 except exit rows

The exact same happened to me. Flew out last Sunday, was able to select seat. Flying home tonight, tried to check in online last night and couldn't select a seat without paying. Had to tick a box to automatically assign me a random seat that I didn't know which one it was until I clicked to create the boarding pass. I wonder is it the same on the website? I didn't think to try that instead.

If this is a new blanket change it is really ****

Even the seats that used to be free within the 48hr window had the charges now. The only way not to pay was to hit the seat me anywhere option.

To be honest, as the “free” seats historically where in the back 1/3 of the aircraft I’ve typically ticked “sit me anywhere” and usually ended up somewhere before the wing.

They seem to be pretty good at convincing people to check in well in advance where you always had to pay for a seat so this tends to use up the cheaper seats leaving you with the more expensive options (except front row, exit row etc) empty.

Spotted the below text when booking a flight on seat selection page.

    New seats policy

If you’d like to choose your seat, you’ll need to purchase one. Alternatively, you’ll be assigned one for free at check in.

This is really crap. I travel once a month for work and I'm damned if I'm going to pay out of my own pocket for a seat. You can bet my employer won't either, so looks like I will be confined to the middle seat hell gamble every time. Very disappointed in Aer Lingus.

I used to fly monthly or even more frequently in fact, are you collecting your avios and aerclub points ?
FF Status would grant you more seating choices

If you have status you will not be allocated a middle seat ex Dublin if you know how this works

Anyone checked yet if you pop quickly to a kiosk in the terminal to “reprint” a boarding pass can you select a seat from there ?

    Used to work previously

Kiosks in DUB no longer print boarding passes, they turned it off to increase capacity for people checking in bags (they were having problems with large volume of passengers due to the free 10kg bag EI provide)
