Neser gets Crawley. Short delivery down leg, Crawley nicks it.. jeez that ball should have been heading to the boundary like a tracer bullet…real bonus for Australia…

Anyone know where to listen to TMS commentary. They used to link on BBC website for the you tube channel. I'm in work and I cant use VPN because it doesn't work well with my work software (when I actually do some work 😁)

    196-4 at lunch dinner.

Working today and tomorrow so glad to see England might take it into the weekend at least.

47 overs bowled in two sessions. Was there a delay, just ridiculously slow, or is the night session longer in a day/night match?

I think that you tube link is only when England play at home unfortunately. I went looking for it too, TMS is not available outside of UK as afar as I know - VPN aside.

This looks like a great opportunity for Root to get his elusive century in Australia. 29 needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,503 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Root is going to run out of partners here before he gets his century.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,970 ✭✭✭MFPM

Two wickets in 4 balls...England were going along broadly untroubled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

England will have been hoping for 350 before that Jack's dismissal. Probably still is the target. Australia will be disappointed if it goes above 320.

    Nice century by Root.

Now the English can badger us all with something only they were obsessing over.

Root has his hundred in Australia. It was nonsense anyway that he couldn't be considered a great without it. Hard earned after coming in at 5-2. He could go on now and have a great series.

Root gets his century, hard fought knock. Starc has 6, Australia so reliant on him without Cummins and Hazelwood..

Australia taking the piss now time wasting. The urge to declare must be high with Stokes seeing this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,970 ✭✭✭MFPM

Terrible bowling by Australia, had the opportunity to keep England under 300, but bowling rubbish at Root and Archer on 28 off 19 balls..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,503 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

That was a fun final hour or so. 74 overs in the day, was there really no delays? Must be a record low, or close to it anyway.

It's not really slow if there's no spinners is it?

Ah yes, forgot Australia aren't playing Lyon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,703 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Surely they're looking at a wtc points deduction. 74 overs with only 9 wickets falling and no long delays for injuries. Pink ball test of course is when they could say you have to bowl the 90 overs, no matter how long it takes.

England's day, that last hour could prove very costly for Australia. Leaving Lyon out was a mistake, Boland off it today, Green in effective, Neser has some good balls but he's inconsistent.

the over rate is a disgrace, if a member of the fielding team picks up a run the mill injury there shouldn’t be any on field treatment. 12th man should be in the stand, fully ready for action and the injured player leaves immediately for treatment or leaves to be permanently replaced.

I think a major issue there was the weather. Around 30°, so what should happen is in advance an extra mini drinks break added to each session once temperature goes 26°+. But literally just enough time for each player to neck a bottle of water, change gloves / shirt if required and dry themselves. 3/4 minutes…. That wouldn’t be a big deal a DRS review and subsequent change of batsman might take roughly the same time.

Losing 16 overs in a days play for no good reason ? 😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♂️….almost 18% of the scheduled overs not bowled , wtf, umpires, players come on the fukkk, stop short changing people.

be interesting to see how long Root and Archer can hang about for and how many they can put on. Also be interesting to see if England can manage to create a first innings lead…. Interesting test so far….

The previous system was anything over 60 overs would be subject to slow over rates and in the last Ashes series in 2023, Usman Khawaja complained directly to the ICC that the the punishments were too severe and they decided to up the threshold to 80 overs. Smith knew that today and tried to keep overs in the bank for the final session, safe in the knowledge that they would fall below that and that any time delay would keep their batsmen away from opening in the dark. If England bat for 6 more overs tomorrow, then Australia will be punished.

Valuable 50 runs in the last 30 mintues or so which gives England a decent score but it looks like a very good pitch and the only real difficulty batting seemed to come when the light started to fade and the floodlights came on. I would say it was honours even but who really knows. It was really only for Starc that Australia are in the game. Neser and Doggett are of course a big step down from Cummins and Hazlewood and then to leave out Nathan Lyon who has all those wickets, England really should be taking advantage of that.

Apart from the brilliance of Root, there were a number of soft wickets. So many of Starc's wickets comes from wide balls that England can't resist. It's such a poor way of getting out. Great for Root to get a hundred after all those tours without one. Didn't need to cement his legacy with a hundred in Australia, but he did so anyway.

Guerilla Cricket is available online. Witty and knowledgeable punditry.

What an arbitrary rule that is. Go as slow as you like and you can get away with it if you finish the innings in under 80 overs. Zero consideration for the paying fans in the stadium today then.

I guess England will do the same tomorrow. Drag it out and try and have the ball as new as possible for the twilight phase.

Saw an interview with Nathan Lyon now that was recorded just before play on day 1 with a domestic broadcaster and a very savvy reporter asked him when he found out he’d been dropped and what his reaction was. He said he found out 20 minutes after getting to the ground that morning and he described his own reaction to that decision as ‘filthy’. He was still filthy going by his attitude in the interview 😵…. That and the rest of the chat quite direct and candid from Lyon….. wonder is there a bit of an issue behind the scenes beyond being dropped that he felt the needed to be so frank..

90% of the time, “ well there is great competition for places, but naturally disappointing to not to get the nod as I love playing for Australia and…. “

so England just put on 11 more runs to the overnight total. Archer a bit unlucky, that’s a candidate for catch of the year, that ball was hit like a rocket and dying on Labuschagne as he ran full pelt in at the ball.. Labuschagne drops that nobody would have apportioned him blame….excellent take.

England bowlers… this be very very interesting. Fielding and catching needs to improve on the first Aussie innings.

But Smith puts down Head… not a gimme but not a difficult chance. This is the Ashes Jamie, those need to be taken…. Conservative start to the innings but Australia starting to motor now. Carse first change and goes for 14…

After very slow start, Australia moving along now, scoring around 5 an over, Weatherald getting some runs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,970 ✭✭✭MFPM

Head makes a mistake and is caught by atkinson, wicket for Carse...77/1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,605 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Aussies cruising... scoring quickly.. rate is 5.71 an over… inexperienced Weatherald with 50 off 45.. been far too easy for Australia.. England bowling poorly.. 17 off Carse's 5th over, desperate... Cook rightly very critical on comms, Aussies throwing the bat at anything short / wide of which there is plenty… run rate 6 an over now.. jeez ..

Big wicket for England, Stokes having being knocked around the park gets Labuschagne who was batting well. Aus 138 behind.
