    Hi All,

Anyone have recent experience of this? Eldest girl almost 17 and I'm looking into getting her insured. Most likely on my wifes car (nissan leaf). Birthday is in Jan but wifes policy is up in mid Dec. I'm looking at what company in best to go with for the renewal in anticipation of having to insure my daughter in january.

Aviva have an option of €660 for 6 months insurance including 12 lessons which seems good.

I phoned my company (axa) and they can't give me any idea of cost until she has the licence number, but the mood music wasn't promising as my yolk is a 2 litre renault trafic and the guy in the phone suggested that i would have to suspend my no claims bonus when adding an inexperienced driver. The cost of the policy would then be based pretty much solely on my daughter, like she was the main driver. Thought it might be good to get her on my policy so she could learn in the manual so that is at least an option for her in the future.

Wife is currently insured with allianz but i can't get through to them on the phone to query their policy.

Online quote suggested about €750 for my daughter with her own policy on a fiat 500 so that might be the best way to proceed.

Anyway, any advice on recent experience would be gratefully received.

750 on her own? At 17 as a learner? Can't be.

I was ringing around last week for mt niece (18 with test passed). quotes of 2200-3500 in Limerick.

The 660 with 12 lessons is a bargain. It'd barely cover the lessons @ 50-60 quid a pop.

Yeah, seemed very cheap. I made up a DOB that would have her just 17 now and starting the policy in md december. Got me looking at cheap small manual cars!

Yes, i think i'll move the wife's policy to aviva anyway and we can start with their 'educate' package which is the mentioned above. The policy is €100 more expensive than he renewal with allianz but as i can't seem to get in touch with them to see what they would offer Aviva seems like the best plan at present.

We found Aviva to be the only option.

we’ve just done this with our 19 year old, the Aviva driving school worked out really well. You can also extend for 3 more months including 3 lessons and pretest, the wait after the EDT is quite long - he was waiting 5 months for his test so the accompanied driver cover was great for getting him out between lessons.

He passed his test (today!) and looking around now for own insurance. Looking between 1800-2k between Allianz and the AA.

No. 3 passed the test recently — Aviva package + extension. Which with experience across three learners, the Aviva deal works out the best.

OP, with No. 1 we were in the same scenario — policy renewal a couple of months before 17th birthday so it was difficult to get a quote at that point — two cars, one was a small auto the other 2l manual. Wanted them to learn on the manual. At the time, I think it added ~€150 onto the policy to go with the bigger manual so that's what we did. To be clear that was just the extra for the larger manual. The price increase on our policy overall was 😭.

No. 1 was in Covid times and we could not get the Aviva deal. Like you, could not get an accurate quote until we had a driver number but the person we got talking to at Aviva was very helpful. If you go with this option, as others have pointed out, you can extend after the 6 months. The bit about suspension of your NCB is total BS.

IMO whoever quoted you €750 for a 17 year old learner was either on drugs or thought you were looking for cover for a tricycle. No 1 got her own car policy at 19 with a FL for 2 years, no points and 2+ years as a named driver for €1,800. Some wouldn't quote and at least one was double that.

If I recall correctly, Aviva wouldn't quote for her own policy which seemed very odd as they do the best learner package and her named driver experience was with them. I can't remember who that was with but she changed to Achras the following and they are very good.

The Aviva system is very good. If you have two policies with them the learner is covered for both cars at no additional cost and after the rest is passed there is an option for a third package for 6 months with further lessons that teach them to drive "properly". If they pass am informal test with an Aviva instructor they can have up to 3 months of the 6 unaccompanied.

Thanks a million for all the replies. Aviva for the renewal it is so. We will start her in the Leaf and worry about the manual at a future date. my policy is not due for renewal until august so maybe look at it then. In the mean time she can get some experience etc in the leaf.

Be warned, you may find it difficult/expensive to her insure on the Leaf. From the insurance company's point of view, the acceleration of an EV combined with an inexperienced driver = higher risk.

That would be annoying - its significantly safer with all the driver aids than my Renault Trafic - but i assume that will be a no go as its a 2L, albeit slow and steady. The leaf would certainly leave it for dead. Anyway - January will tell its own story - for the moment moving the leaf to Aviva so we at least have an option of their driving school offer. After that we will see how we go.

Try everywhere, and/or get a decent broker trawl the market.

There is no universal answer ever.
