Virgin Media Cancellation deals

I phoned them today, and got the 6-months half price offer, then having refused that, got 9 months half price - but even the base price for the discounted period is still higher than Sky or Eir, so I told them to go ahead and cancel.

I'll probably go with Eir. I tried the Sky Stream previous year, and it was a nice concept, but frustratingly buggy in implementation.

The cancellation kicks in on Xmas Eve, so I'll need to be certain that the alternative is in place for Xmas, or I'll be getting an ass kicking from the rest of the family.

we did the same, got shot of virgin. the arrogance around no initial offers until it came t the last minute, i posted about it a few months ago here. went to sky. but that will be only until they dont play ball at renewal.

we cant fault sky, tv is ok, stream box works fine, ntflx apps is good, 500mb bb is solid. we subscribe to a few things so dont watch anything mainstream as such pretty much on demand, the ch4 player is good thats inbuilt and they allow irish viewers to watch. The virgin broadband and tv were fine service wise but i just felt being ripped off when i heard deals some ppl were getting. and the fact they made me feel like i had to beg to be a customer , they can and did fcuk right off. if they were the only supplier of tv and bb, id do without. and that utter thrash station of the same name, thats what you're paying for.

our neighbours have eir, you'll see the van out to them now and again, they do have problems now and again so worth considering.

Ended up cancelling in my wife's name and signing up in my own name. Pain in the ass, if they just offered the same deal to existing customers wouldn't need to jump through hoops.

I signed up for two years this time so I wouldn't have the same problem next year. I did end up with a deal of a new 43inch tv so will see if that comes after a month.

Rang them earlier to see what I could get as my contract had gone up to €80PM after having the half price offer for 9 months.

The most they offered was 6 months at €40 and then 6 months at €80 on a 12 month contract for BB only.

I turned it down and there wasn't a further offer forthcoming so I've cancelled.

The service is due to finish on December 25th so here's hoping they call back with an improved offer.

The service is in my name only so i think i can get the new customer offer by signing up in my wife's name?

has anyone got "3broadband Unlimited 5G"?

How does 5G compare with a 1GB VM connection?

Heavy usage household with both working from home and teenagers

Yeah that's what I normally do cancel one and have the new one under my wife's name or mine overlapping by a week to make sure no loss of service. I signed up for 2 years this time to stop the change again in a year.

What deal did you get as a new customer?

From looking at the website they get you to put in your eircode and then seem to show you a dearer price to whats on offer on switcher.ie.

Went to do the same today, was told that because my account will run till the 27th of December, any new account at the same address won't be activated until after this date.

Anyone know how true that is or is it just a scare tactic?

Don't ring them, sign up online about 4 days before the present contract expires, being so close to Christmas maybe do it around the 20-21st, the router usually arrives the next day.

    Hi all,

I ended up with one day between my wifes old contract running out and the new one starting but I think that was I just didnt sign up early enough as the installation took a week to book in. I expected they would have sent it in the post and I just set it all up.

Anyway I got the €67 a month TV broadband for two years with the free TV. My wifes contract had jumped to €114 a month for the same package.

I had the opposite problem, signed up thinking it would take a while to arrive, came the next day so I'll end up with 2 bills in December.

I'm rationalising it as 90 quid for a 43" TV.

The other half rang Virgin earlier today looking for a deal. The best the lady could offer was 35e for 6 months on 500mb, or 40e for 12 months at 1gb, so went with the latter as the total yearly cost was lower.

She said that a new modem will have to be sent out though, so just hope this one can be put into bridge mode, as we use our own.

Cancelled a few days ago (got first year half price, second year 9 months half price after closing down the other halfs account to start again under my name).

Just got email for 12 months half price - happy with that til Eir get the area upgraded (hopefully in the next year)

Virgin have been changing the cables or something the past month (two different sets of workmen have done something with replacing the cables…), wondering if they are upgrading the line and then hoping to get people in the area to upgrade their plans

I got the retention call after cancelling. The call came about 5 days before contract had ended. I got the same as I was previously on, €57 for the year which is half price.

Got a bill last week for €132. Got through to their billing and all they could say was "we tell you at the end of the call that your first bill will be higher."

I understand that would happen if you're out of contract for a few days/weeks, but what's the logic in it increasing when I was never out of contract!?

I can try again and hope for someone better on their side but hoping someone here might know more

I got the half price for 12 months offer as well, would have worked out at 59 for 500mb and TV, instead locked into 2 years at 67 with 1gig.

Your bill should not have been higher if you cancelled before the end of your contract. For us, two years in a row renewing with half price for the full year, our new bill has never been higher than that agreed. I’d ring again and complain, it’s not what you agreed to.

So I’ve cancelled my 1GB BB only plan and it’s due to run out on 25/12.
I plan on signing up in the wife’s name but I see the cheapest they offer is €45 a month for 12 months.
Is that the best anyone has got out of them?

They sent one but if they had of just sent the kit I could have set it up myself as its just a like for like replacement. He had presumed he was to run fibre but I had gotten that last year.

We got onto Virgin yesterday and were able to get 40e for 1gb for 12 months as an offer.

Rang this morning and got sorted, far more competent person this time. Credit applied within minutes. Hopefully the next bill is correct

Do you have an option of Siro at your property?

I dont so im wondering is that why they arent giving me an offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 473 ✭✭smilgy

I have the option of OpenEir fibre at the property, but can't use this as its not currently possible to bring this property from the street due to a blocked duct. My only option is Virgin unfortunately (not that they know that!)

I got a call from Virgin last night saying that they can now offer the same deal as new customers. I politely told them where to go, as it is just too late. I've made the order to switch to Eir and I have some of their equipment in the house.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,202 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

How long ago did you cancel with virgin?
I cancelled on the 25/11 so I’m trying to gauge when I’ll get that call or ring them back and see what they offer.
I don’t wanna be in a situation with no BB on the 25th December!!

My email confirmation of cancellation is dated 24th Nov, so they should be onto you soon!

Contract expired recently, was 52.99 for 500mb and tv. Got a deal for 12mths for 58.50 on phone, 1gb and TV. Not too bad so just went with it.

My retention call came about 5 days before the cancellation was due

wow ya gotta hand it to them no sooner did @AndrewJRenko say I’m due a call soon they rang!
Settled for half price 1GB BB for €40 for 12 months and no price increase.
Im happy with that considering I have no access to Siro in south Dublin area and any other suppliers are going off an eircom/eir/telecom eirann copper line, which I no longer have a socket in the house for.
