Yeah it is very efficient. Sure it weighs only 1100kg or thereabouts 😂 Needless to say for the above hypothetical trip to Galway, you would not want to be driving at the speed limit. Something this car isn't the best in anyway because it is so light and tall, it suffers from strong winds at speed

It really is a city car. It excels at that. Afaik the first car in the world with proper 1 pedal driving too, years before the Teslas got it. Such a pity that asshole Krüger bullied the brilliant i team away

Strange that BMW axed the i3 project alright. It was selling well and acted like a lighthouse into the emerging electric range from recent years, at a time when their major competitors were doing nothing in electric.

Probably wasn’t profitable enough compared to other higher end models in the BMW range to warrant a successor or revamp of the original. Sales tapered off in it’s final years which most likely prompted a boardroom decision to axe it. Maybe the electric Mini was meant to be it’s spiritual successor ?

Krüger reckoned the future was diesel and hydrogen, not electric 🙄

Thankfully BMW got rid of him, maybe just in time to save the company. If I have ever been a fanboi of any make, it is BMW (and not Tesla)

Bit like the Model S demonstrating Tesla's commitment to and progress with electric vehicles. You don't necessarily set up to make a profit but to get a product into the mainstream marketplace so that customers queue for what's next and your organisation gets into the mainstream news for the right reasons.

An Post might want to spend a few bob on driving lessons

Not bad driving more couldn't give a damn. I didn't pay for it mentality.

    2020 40kWh Leaf €5750 asking, likely to be an ex-taxi and high risk though;

Couple of Mercedes B class for around €8k, probably get them for about €7k. We have discussed these before, it is basically a Tesla drivetrain and battery. If something goes wrong, neither Tesla nor Mercedes will want to know, you have to take that into consideration. And they have no DC fast charging either, so limited to being a city car. That said, nippy comfortable car. A relatively new Mercedes for not a lot of money

I'd be genuinely interested in one of those LDV vans if they can be got that cheap - at least, if they didn't need too much in the way of dent repair! After all, you could pay similar for a decent 8x4 trailer, but the van would be a whole lot easier to use - plus I might be able to think in terms of increasing the range with extra battery modules if the notion of a camper conversion really took my fancy. It's a pity they're all limited to 100kmh though - I wonder would it be possible to derestrict them? Even an extra 10kmh would be nice to have, regardless of the effect on efficiency.

Living in NI, I'd be importing it from the south, so the complete opposite of what most people have been trying to do with EVs!😀 But any I've seen on UK Autotrader start at around £10k plus VAT, the few times I've looked. I don't know whether any customs duty would be payable for bringing one north - the UK's .gov website just says to call HMRC which I don't want to do at this stage, if for no other reason that I've no wish to faff about on hold or being transferred from one call handler to another. Anybody know the score?

Forget about extending the range of the van unless you can do it yourself 😂

And a van like this is a massive brick with terrible aerodynamics. Increase your speed and your range will drop off a cliff. I'd say at 130km/h with a 30km/h headwind, you are probably looking at about 30-40km range. Is that really worth the extra speed?

They have the original Tesla Model S motor design which eventually fails with an internal coolant leak similarly to Audi Q7 and Mercedes EQC motors (that copied the rotor liquid cooling from the early Model S motors). Aftermarket solution is either to remove the rotor cooling or improve it but I would not rely on this service being available in Ireland.

120km range or is it more?
it is tempting at that price

Never driven one, but probably something like that alright. I'd say considerably less in worst case winter conditions

Ah I know the range would be hit, but I'd almost never take it further than 30km from home anyway, especially if using it as a load lugger. I'm only thinking in terms of wanting to keep up with traffic on the dual carriageway near where I live - always good to have the option.

Tbh I'm mainly fantasising about converting one to a camper - could be a nice option at some stage in the future, but if I ever did take that step it'd be preferable to get a bit further than Dundalk before having to stop for a 90-minute charge. Obviously adding more range isn't just plug and play (I wish!) but as I said one time before, at least in this vehicle lack of space for battery modules wouldn't be a barrier.

Did we get any updates on whether or not Revenue are expending the "reasonable period" cars have to spend in NI from 3 months? Or was it just rumours?

A chap in the main motors forum said he produced car recently after 4.5 months being registered in NI and was turned away.

This could be the new rules i heard a few weeks back, but still no confirmation.

The FB post is all that shows when looking and is being picked up by Google AI as the reference. The "reasonable" period of time means nothing. There won't be any confirmation available in any solid terms to the public. It'll just be a memo and the official behind the counter can decide what they deem reasonable.

Risky business. They seem to change the rules within the NCTS organisation quite a lot. Probably told from above what to do. If you just brought in a €30k car and all of a sudden you have to pay €10k in VAT / duty, I bet you wish you had never bothered. Of course you just wouldn't go ahead and sell the car back into the UK / NI. But that transaction will likely lose you a few grand unless you have a good channel to sell it through and / or you got an utter bargain in the first place

Lot of risk, very little reward. Safer to just buy your EV here in the Republic…

I have no idea what car the guy was bringing in, but I did ask.

I've rarely seen an S in the republic I would have wanted to buy (at the right price). Saw one this year, a 7 seater, but when I got close to pulling the finger out, it sold. It had been up for a few weeks at a low price. Easier to find what you want across the water, but it comes with its risks and can be a pain alright if you have to wait to bring it in.

I just bought another eGolf, so the i3 is for sale immediately. I haven't got it advertised anywhere but happy to do a decent deal if anyone is interested. PM me.

Where do you find these great deals? I am sure you are not selling your first eGolf, but if you are I would be keen!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,520 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

He just calls every ad and tells the seller their car is 50% overpriced and waits for one to bite

Any knowledge available on what this eventually went for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,242 ✭✭✭✭unkel

The kids these days. FaceBook and TikTok. Friend of my daughter's (who owns the other eGolf) spotted it. They did all the groundwork, and then brought me in for the kill and to pay the man 😂 The kids even did the test drive and filled in all the paperwork without me 😂

Not as good a bargain as the last time, but this car is super clean and tight, low miles, NCTd and taxed

And no, keeping both these eGolfs but selling the BMW i3. If anyone interested, can do a good deal if it saves me from having the cost and the hassle to put it up for sale
