Recommendations for cameras for safety please

Hello. I know this has been discussed before but I'm wondering if there are any updates on good front and back cameras for safety and reporting dangerous driving etc (please don't clog up the thread with "there's no point" etc etc - I'm just interested in recommendations from people's experience).

I have looked on-line a bit and my first impression is that they are expensive.

I'm also looking for front and back that will work in combination.

And I'm also looking for something a bit discrete.

    Any thoughts will be appreciated.

    here for the replies.

I’ve been hovering over the Insta360 for a while now.

my biggest issue is my own ability to a) charge the camera and b) download footage. I’ve had helmet mounted and handlebar mounted cameras before but either drifted away from using the for either reason a or b.

in reality, I can see myself getting the meta rayban glasses as I will wear them as I do my current sunglasses, the software is meta, charging will happen as I charge my watch (maybe🤷🏼‍♂️)

Any half decent camera is expensive unfortunately.

I have a Cycliq Fly12 (front) and Fly6 (rear) cameras which I use whilst commuting (they double up as a light). You buy direct from cycliq.com. However, you can an occasionally find a deal from them. The footage is good quality (HD) and make it fairly easy to capture a passing reg no.

Garmin also have camera Varias but I've not used them and they too are pricey.

All that said, I've had some successes with camera footage in getting dangerous drivers punished but in my experience, the gardai generally don't want to be bothered with the hassle of dealing with a close pass or whatever.

Cycliq is grand, hopefully they have improved their image stabilisation but I found it good. GoPro is the best image stabilisation, you can set it to auto upload if you pay their subscription but it's easy to transfer via cable when you get home or to work.

Insta looks good but from a safety perspective, not sure it accomplishes any more than a front and rear, not a fan of helmet mounting, even though I had it for years and it meant you could look where you wanted it to shoot. NorCal Cycling on YouTube has a few reviews and mounting opinions.

Plenty of cheaper options available with a quick Google.

I have a MagicShine SeeMee DV light on rear. Cape than Cycliq and battery life and quality of footage is decent enough.

Garmin just launched a new front Varia light & camera. Like a lot of people, I love the Varia radar so assumed I would buy the rear camera immediately. Reviews were not great so I'll be waiting to see if it has improved and how reviews of the front camera look

Also in the market. Also put off by the minefield that is price-v-image quality-v-ease of upload.

I’ve been down the cheap route - no great issues with image but functionality was a head wreck for a technophobe like myself. Haven’t used it more than a couple of times for that reason and in reality it’ll be for the bin.

Not really prepared to pay Garmin-dollar for front and rear. Esp. since the radar function doesn’t really hold any appeal.

Was tempted by cycliq but so many bad reviews over the years have me unsure as to whether their price is worth it.

Don’t think there are many other big names in the game? Really I just want it for event of incident rather than for reporting close passes etc. Purely for an insurance and peace of mind perspective.

If you’re in any way tech savvy I’d say set a budget, have a look on Amazon and try a well-reviewed budget option as a starter. I’m still waiting for the smoking gun option before buying again. Intuitive functionality is critical for me - I just know I won’t use the thing if it’s a faff to set up and upload etc.

if I had the spare money I’d go Garmin without much hesitation.

The Ghost Drift XL is a good option in terms of price, battery life, quality and discreetness and was top of my list until I picked up a Cycliq Fly6 from a fellow boards member a number of months back.

The Fly6 is good quality, discreet but the battery life isn't great and it's expensive new. With flashing light set to it's brightest and camera rolling I get about 2 hrs from the batter which doesn't quite last me two days so it's a bit of a chore having to charge it each evening. Annoyingly you can connect the Fly6 to your phone (bluetooth) to update settings and check batter life but not to review video, this has to be done via cable and laptop/PC.

another option: buy a second hand/used Garmin Varia?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,829 ✭✭✭Paddigol

This is true. If from a known/ trusted seller I'd say that could be the best option. But whenever those ads appear I'm generally skint, so timing is key too 😂

I'm considering this too, just for 'just in case' evidence, but prices are putting me off a lot of the mentioned options.

I'm toying with the idea of the chilli-tech options, but could easily see another two things to charge up on a regular basis meaning that I just don't use them….!

Any updated recommendations for a rear mounted camera to catch a$$holes :( ?

Two nice long spins the weekend and a thousand perfectly fine overtakes but one malignant tumourous f**stick has me googling rear cameras all morning. Rocket-close-passed the two of us single file on that sh1t narrow twisty section beyond Brittas on the way to Tallaght.

The Garmin Varia seems to be the most suitable and integrated solution for 4-5 hour spins. Go pros seem to only have a couple of hours battery life which is no use.

I'd have thought at this stage that there would be a zillion cheap Temu versions but, I'm not finding them.

I've been through a few cameras over the years. My current is DJI OSMO 4, which is available at a good price now that they've released the OSMO 5.

    https://store.dji.com/ie/list/handheld?category=101%3D101.201.304&from=shop&_gl=1%2Am9y9do%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_ga%2ANTUxMzcwMDgyLjE3NjMzNzQ2MzA.%2A_ga_HXRDE344GS%2AczE3NjMzNzQ2MjkkbzEkZzAkdDE3NjMzNzQ2MjkkajYwJGwwJGgw&tab=102&sort=recommendation&page=1

I got mine from Bermingham Cameras in town, or you can buy direct.

Video quality is great, mountings are very robust, magnetic mount is easy to fit and remove.

Downloading process is still a bit clunky, but it seems that all brands are the same. Wouldn't it be great if it just appeared as a network drive over wifi to allow downloading? It creates an LRF (low resolution file) for each video too, which is a bit intrusive. It would be great if this was an option rather than mandatory.

It doesn't have an option for a burnt-in timestamp on screen, which one Garda has suggested would be important if going to Court.

Varia still on top of the pile I think.

Also struggling to find throw-away emergency backups on Temu.

Had a Fly6, old version, image stabilisation was not great but apparently that has been improved. I had a Tooo from someone here but it only lasted 6 months. It was good, but they are out of business AFAIK now so I wouldn't recommend. I currently run an old GoPro on the back. Great image, easy uploading (can do auto upload over wifi but I actually just plug it in to my laptop to charge and take the footage). Expensive is really the only negative to it.

Are there low power modes on the gopros? 2 hours battery life is no use. Has to be 5 hours or more. It's very often towards the end of a spin coming back into urban areas home later in the morning that you get traffic interactions

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 26,373 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

GoPro would only be useful for Commuting or CX races. You can increase battery life but you aren't getting 5 hours out of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,356 ✭✭✭Dr_Colossus

The Ghost Drift XL is supposed to be up to 9hrs recording. It's a camera only so no additional light to drain the battery like with the Fly6. There's a Ghost Drift XL Pro version also but recording in 4k cuts battery life to 4.5hrs.

Bring power bank and charge camera if you are stopping for coffee

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,225 ✭✭✭_CreeD_

I've used a mix of front and back over the last couple of years. Starting with a cheap HD on the front and a decent mix of camera and light on the back - both sub 100 and decent image quality for the prices but stabilisation was awful on both. I swapped the front to a GoPro Hero 13 this summer before some nice Greenway runs and the Horizon lock alone is a game changer, it's god tier image stabilisation on a bike and being able to run it live from a power pack solves battery life issues. I had installed a rear view (non-recording) camera a year or so ago due to a health problem that made turning an issue and then upgraded it to the same with recording a few months back but at 720p for the recording at least it's hard to make out details like license plates. All of this has an inherent issue of multiple devices, differing battery life/charging units/clarity and file download options. It's a PITA.

So after all that I'm going to replace both with an Insta 360 X5 and try a right side handlebar mount to capture front and back in one go. It being on sale right now on Amazon (459) helped with that decision :) . I'll update here with results after it arrives if there's any interest.

You can run modern GoPros from 5v/2a capable USB power banks. Pop out the battery and just plug the power bank into the standard USB charging port - you can also get a magnetic cover so you don't have to leave the side cover open while doing this. Bonus points for also reducing heat build up this way. The longest I've used one this way was about 3 hours straight. Insta can do the same (afaik).

Look on YouTube for insta 360 discount codes, they are heavily sponsoring different channels like NorCal, Nero Cycling and others

This Ravemen rear camera/light could be a decent challenger to Cycliq's Fly6...

I took the 360 for it's first spin today. Overall very happy with it but for faster moving cars coming from the front the license plates were often too blurry to read, rear was usually ok. I think it might be because I was using 8k@30FPS so next time will try dropping the res and upping the frame rate to compensate.

Can't find any reviews of this, is it brand new launched? It's extraordinarily cheaper than any of its rivals.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 44,541 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

I think it has literally just launched so probably no reviews just yet (which I guess is a surprise).

I've a few different Ravemen lights and they're all good quality, with good battery life. I've also made use of their support twice and they've been really good, replacing a TR500 that developed a fault after a year and also sending replacement Garmin insert for my FR160 (I just had to pay the postage) .

In contrast, Cycliq's support have you jumping through hoops before they'll tell you where to post a faulty unit.

I need a replacement camera and had been thinking of another Fly6 but even with the Black Friday deals, they are crazy money. The Ravemen offering looks to be good quality for a great price.

I am noticing a pricing difference between ravemen.com and ravemen.ie. I've bought from the .com site previously so posting to Ireland is not a limitation or a factor. Both sites are priced in Euro but on the .com site, the light is €99.99 compared to €139.99 on the .ie site.

I also see that their EP01 electronic pump is €89.95 on .com whereas on .ie it is €109.95.

Not that it matters in this example but postage on the .com is free when you spend over €49.94 whereas on the .ie site it is free when you spend over €100

Import duties factored into the .ie price?

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 44,541 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

I've bought from the .com site and taxes are included in the price (just needed to add postage which was free over ~€50)…

Right, so a pure Paddy tax then.

My order from the .com site was sent from China.
The .ie site is based out of Rathnew (Wicklow) which is the same location that warranty items are to be sent to.
Can't see any other reason aside from a Paddy tax. That said, they are still good quality products.
