Calley getting a slap on the wrist tells you all you need to know after My Lai. The torture that happened in Abu Grabh, Selling heroin to fund a disruption insurgency against a democratically elected El Salvador government, paying agents to overthrow Salvador Allende.

Well, excuse me if I think the US military is some paragon of righteous moral "thank you for your service" bullshìt

Hypocritical religious bullshìt, your country is founded on genocide, by a bunch of fundamentalist freaks kicked out of Europe.

Trump hanging Hegseth out to dry over the acts in the Caribbean.

He was asked on Air Force 1 if he would have wanted a second strike on the boat and he said no, he wouldn't have. He did say he believes Hegseth who told him he didn't order a second strike.

I can't see the military people involved taking the fall for Hegseth if he did order the strike as reported so if that evidence comes out, surely Hegseth will have to resign or be fired for lying to Trump (irrespective of the fact that he did order an illegal act).

If this happens, is it down to the Trump DoJ to investigate/prosecute Hegseth, or what happens then?

Is there any basis or truth to the online allegation that the U.S National Colours were/have not been lowered to half-mast on the death of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom following the attack on her and her colleague in Washington DC? The allegation has made comparison between the honour given to Charlie Kirk by Trump and supposedly not for Beckstrom.

most of the drugs (80%) come across via border with Mexico - according to a Sky commentary today. What ever ‘ this’ is , it will not stop drugs flowing into USA.

Totally normal behavior from the Secretary of War.

He could be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life if he loses his job over this.

I'd have no faith in the US justice system holding him appropriately accountable, but some friend of a friend of those killed? If they're half as dangerous as the administration claims they are, he could learn the hard way.

Q: Governor Walz called for the release of your MRI results

Trump: They were perfect like my phone call where I got impeached. Absolutely perfect. If you want to have it released, I’ll release it.

Q: Can you tell us what they were looking at?

    Trump: For what? Releasing?

Q: No, what part of the body was the MRI looking at?

Trump: I have no idea. It was just an MRI. It wasn’t the brain because I took a cognitive test and aced it. I got a perfect mark which you would be incapable of doing.

The lunatics really have taken over the asylum.

It's difficult to imagine anyone as unqualified to be SECDEF. Out of everyone available for that post, this was the best guy they could get?

Absolutely everyone Trump has appointed to government positions has had absolutely nothing to do with ability in the role as you'd expect - it is all about doing what he wants them to do or because they previously did something to benefit him.

The current MAGA administration and the appointments process is reminiscent of and IMHO even more corrupt than the Spoils system which previously led to political repercussions and even the assassination of a POTUS when Garfield was shot by Giteau in 18881.
In real terms, very little has changed and the notion that political appointees are vetted by the Senate?
Has been shown repeatedly at this point to be a complete nonsense.

The lack of personal and political accountability, and the odd situation whereby the Senate holds more sway than the lower house has trapped the US into a shít storm of systemic political failure.
The revolving door between the political appointments, the senior civil service and private enterprise has embedded graft and corruption within their system.
Couple that with the most utterly corrupt admin since Andrew Jackson and it is a recipe for collapse in confidence in the apparatus and institutions of the State.

While I would not be at all surprised, I cannot find any reference to Kevin Hassett having a criminal record. I found a Kevin Hassett who was convicted of a violent crime, along with his brother, but it wasn't possible to establish if it was the same Kevin Hassett.

Its not helped by the fact that there do not seem to be any free - reliable - sources of information, suddenly every site needs subscription it seems. Wikipedia does not mention any convictions.

Ooo…have you been watching the new "Death by Ligthning" then? Planning to do a watch of that myself soon. Had read a good bit about the story of Garfield's assasination and of the head-banger who shot him.

A bit mad that it took Garfield's murder to get rid of the spoils system, and that Garfield himself used to just walk around DC on his own without any guards. Imagine Donnie trying similar.

Interesting piece from Time in terms of how New York is actively resisting against ICE. The raids are incredibly unlikely to be effecting in New York given the density of the city. Expect outraged truth social posts.

Not even heard of it until you mentioned it.
I'll definitely be giving it a look now though.
Garfield and Giteau are recurring Characters in "American Dad"
My knowledge of US history and politics, limited as it is.
Comes from having a habit of reading history wherever and whenever I can.
Be it a book, an article or a random Wikipedia article, I'll read it.
Not much use for anything apart from quizzing 🤣
And my ongoing politics & international relations degree.
The joys of early retirement mean I get to take advantage of free time to go back to Uni.
It's nice to study for personal interest, rather than future career.

Started off as the usual kid interested in myths and legends, that led on to a love of classics and then as I started learning more?
I realised I really know nothing at all (Ironic especially in terms of US political history 😉).
For me, it's important to try and understand the past of all sides on a political argument.
It helps me contextualise the arguments and understand motivations.
    That said?

Rarely have the motives of Avarice and self protection ever been as apparent in politics as they are amongst current GOP leadership.
I've never seen more clear cut case of person over country.

    Self serving, evasive make believe.

There was no policy of default sinking of boats. It was a policy of kill them all regardless evident by Trump, Hesgeth and Rubio`s own utterances and a war crime perpetrated by anyone who played any part in it for any of those 21 "default sinkings" that resulted in 83 deaths.

As you are still attempting to justify carrying out war crimes as legal orders , I`m left wondering just how heinous a crime you would be prepared to commit if ordered to do so. I suspect the bar is not high when you have advocated for everyone to cease commenting on this until the results of various, a long way down the road inquiries, are made known, when you cannot bring yourself to answer the question of should these "default sinkings" and Trump`s sabre rattling on Venezuela also cease - at the very least, until the results of these inquiries are made known.

Trump must hate the very mention of Jack Smith's name, who is determined to eventually have Trump locked up.

Democrats should sign up Jack and prepare him to become a Presidential Candidate, that sure would put the wind up GOP and Trump, send the Don quicker to his waiting grave.

Something like a school of sharks surrounded the debris so a second strike was ordered to take everything out, mercy killings.

Exactly what I was going to post ,plus a quip about batteries and putting America's reputation out of its misery.(but I thought it was a bit petty and frivolous when people were seemingly murdered in cold blood by the Department of Necessary Cruelty )

Alina Habba is out as US Attorney for New Jersey after decision by Federal Appeals Court.

3 judge panel effectively ruled her doing so in the manner she was, was unconstitutional.

Another kick in the chops for Trump.

No. The State of West Virginia is/was flying at half mast.

👏😊He'll be apoplectic with rage. Two of the presiding judges were Bush appointments so the usual MAGA guff about activist judges and radical leftists won't wash.

How's that 'better to be pretty than smart' thing working out for her?

Ehh. Fox News probably slavering to bring her in to replace "Judge" Jeanine.
