Here’s how that WSJ article starts:

Make Money Not War: Trump’s Real Plan for Peace in Ukraine

Three powerful businessmen—two Americans and a Russian—hunched over a laptop in Miami Beach last month, ostensibly to draw up a plan to end Russia’s long and deadly war with Ukraine.

But the full scope of their project went much further, according to people familiar with the talks. They were privately charting a path to bring Russia’s $2 trillion economy in from the cold—with American businesses first in line to beat European competitors to the dividends.

At his waterfront estate, billionaire developer-turned-special envoy Steve Witkoff was hosting Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign-wealth fund and Vladimir Putin’s handpicked negotiator, who had largely shaped the document they were revising on the screen. Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, had arrived from his nearby home on an island known as the “Billionaire Bunker.”

Dmitriev was pushing a plan for U.S. companies to tap the roughly $300 billion of Russian central bank assets, frozen in Europe, for U.S.-Russian investment projects and a U.S.-led reconstruction of Ukraine. U.S. and Russian companies could join to exploit the vast mineral wealth in the Arctic. There were no limits to what two longtime adversaries could achieve, Dmitriev had argued.

So the president’s son in-law is intimately involved in peace negotiations with a foreign adversary that could benefit the family enormously. Par for the course these days.

No need to blow up refineries when you just have to turn off the tap at the port. More bang for your buck 😁

A meeting between US and Ukrainian officials in Florida was "very productive", US secretary of state Marco Rubio has said, but more work remains to be done towards ending Russia's war in Ukraine.

"There are a lot of moving parts, and obviously there'sanother party involved here that will have to be a part of theequation, and that will continue later this week, when [Donald Trump's special envoy Steve] Witkoff travels to Moscow, although we've also been in touch invarying degrees with the Russian side, but we have a pretty goodunderstanding of their views as well," he said.

US and Ukrainian officials talked for roughly four hours.

Later this week, Trump's special envoy, Witkoff, will travel to Moscow to meet Vladimir Putin.

And round and round we go. Ukraine won't budge on conceding land, Russia won't stop until they have said land

Turkey has condemned Ukraine's sea drone attacks on two Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea.

Its foreign ministry said the attacks on the Kairos and Virat vessels took place inside Turkey's exclusive economic zone.

Spokesperson Oncu Keceli said they "posed serious risks to navigation, life, property and environmental safety in the region".

He said Turkey is holding talks with the "relevant parties" to prevent the spread of the war in Ukraine across the Black Sea, and to protect Turkey's economic interests.

You may be correct or maybe they are operating without ais to make it more difficult for drones to target them.

Kherson and Zappy for Donetsk and Lusack needs exploring.

Could be a deal there to be done. Both give up land, for an equal loss.

Russia never talked of wanting Kherson and Zappy before war started.

How do you mean this type of deal represents an equal loss? You only mention what sound like parts of Ukraine which Zelenskyy has no constitutional right to give away to anyone. Ukraine's armed forces continue to strike at putin's terrorist state and putin isn't offering anything that looks like it might make that stop.

How did Belgium end up as a haven for all those dodgy Russian "assets"?

From a strictly military point of view, Putin could end this war any time he wants - Ukraine has no interest in taking Moscow. However, he would have some explaining to do to people at home in a devastated economy and soldiers returning from the front who were fed lies from start to finish. He completely misread Europe where the resolve to resist him is stiffening. Even Germany has woken up which is bad news for him. A parallel with Russia in 1917 could start to emerge next year.

Apparently, it’s the location of Euroclear which is not a proper answer:

Often described as a bank for banks, Euroclear traces its roots to the late 1960s, when it grew out of the Brussels office of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York, which later became JP Morgan. At a time when financial transactions were speeding up, Euroclear enabled the electronic exchange of cash and securities (a stock, a bond or some other instrument to raise capital), rather than moving around piles of paper.

Today, Euroclear handles a mind-boggling amount of money – every four weeks it claims to process transactions equivalent to global GDP, or €1.3 quadrillion (meaning 1.3 plus 14 zeros) a year. None of this is held in cash. But Euroclear is security conscious. At its headquarters a pair of security cameras are trained on every corner.

Euroclear’s agreement with the Russian government dates back to October 2012. A few months earlier Vladimir Putin had secured a third term in office and cracked down brutally on opposition forces that had mounted unprecedented protests against his rule, but Russia’s integration into the global economy was marching on.

At the time Russian banks were looking for connections to western investors. “Probably all Russian brokers, banks, and even the Russian state held funds through Euroclear,” said Roeland Moeyersons, a business lawyer based in Brussels.

When it comes to dodgy Russian assets, though, which country has clean hands?

I’d say Ukraine’s biggest fear is that a peace deal with Russia is just a pause in the fighting before a South Vietnamese situation emerges where everybody else declares peace and looks the other way as the country disappears.

As mentioned by Ardillaun, it's because Euroclear is based in Brussels.

They are one of only two central securities deposits in the world and therefore hold an insane amount of securities for clients worldwide. If those clients would lose trust in Euroclear (because for example assets are used for something else than their intended purpose) it could potentially have devastating effects on the banking sector worldwide.

It's been used as somewhat of a threat for years now to avoid using Russian assets to help Ukraine, so in the meantime Belgium has used the taxes generated from those assets instead.

It's clear that it's the countries that know what Russian occupation means who are the most ardent supporters of Ukraine.

Detailed update from Denis Davydov. Threat to Huliapole has been blocked for now. He says Russia has way more fiber-optic drones but he disputes media reports that Russia has advantage in drones overall.

Also Ukraine making changes to its trench system.

    Indeed.

Here are the dragons teeth deployed in Palanga airport 2 weeks ago… also, once I got to the airport, the only mobile data I could get was an Edge connection… I’ve flown from
Palanga airport about 20 times over the last 3 years and never had no 3G/4G/5G there…

Probably part of drone jamming. Russia has used cellular signals for drones in Ukraine.

Does anyone think the theory Russia blew it up could be true? Some interesting theories in the replies too.

Putin : Deport all migrants. We want a white state. All ethnics to be sent to Ukraine first. Migrants cannot work in state jobs.

Also Putin : Bring in Africans to serve in the army in Ukraine and african women to build drones. I'm granting Chinese people visa free entry to Russia till 14th September 2026. Border guards don't stop any Chinese coming in.

Well they have to say that. Hopefully they will do nothing of consequence.

It looks like history is starting up again.

I wouldn't put it past the Russians…but I'm confused as to motive. Breaking Nordstream cuts off a revenue source for the Russians, so it wouldn't make sense.

But maybe that's where I'm making my mistake here…I'm applying sense to a Russian plan. Could it actually be that the Russians are so self-rightious and block-headed that they thought that Europe would buy the idea the Ukraine did it and then turn on the Ukrainians for depriving the EU of the precious Russian gas?

Maybe that's what those nitwits were thinking?

Polish President has scrapped visit to Hungary amidst differences on Russia/Ukraine. The Law and Justice party used to be very close to Orbans Fidesz party because of similar views on cultural issues.

A Norwegian report finds the cost of a Russian victory is double the cost of helping Ukraine.

It's clear that Ukraine is reducing the Russian drone threat to Europe. Ukraine is being hit by 500 drones per day, while 16 out of 24 drones fired at Poland were not shot down by fighter jets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,701 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

I find that performative from Nawrocki. They (Law and Justice party) never halted support for Hungary and protection of Orbán at EU level using the Polish veto (i.e. put their money where their mouth is). I mean it's not a new thing that Orbán is pro Russia.

What do they really think about the sharp pro Russia turn from the US under Trump? I have been wondering that over last year. They must know it will only encourage Putin in future ambitions elsewhere (Putin, when he gets wound up about his history + in lecture mode, talks about Poland as this evil thorn in Russia's side).

Not a peep from them (as far as I know?). They look very, very stupid now, after all those years of crawling up MAGAs backside!

Zelenskyy coming to Ireland tomorrow for a state visit…

This French frigate also arrived today in Cork with what looks like some decent air defence radar systems… I wonder is it related to the visit?

    And in addition…..

At the time the West wasn't going to allow Ukraine to target Russian energy so they could supply oil and gas in huge amounts regardless.

Didn't they only destroy NS1 so probably thought NS2 would still be opened. Remember they were pushing all the Europe will freeze propaganda? And when Ukraine started making progress on the battlefield they really pushed the Ukraine are terrorists narrative through their western propaganda pieces.

The Ukrainians were very hesitant to even attack Russia itself at the beginning because their western partner's didn't want escalation and they were completely dependent on help from Western partners to survive. I doubt they would have carried out this attack.

I wonder if Orwell Rd. will try to cobble together a «protest» or something similarly embarrassing.

Damn…I shouldn’t be giving them ideas…since we know they probably read here :P

The Zelensky's are expected to arrive tonight. They are expected to meet President Connolly. President Zelensky may address the Dail.

He had been visiting France. He is calling in allies to ensure Russia is not rewarded for its invasion.

Also the plan to phase out state funded commercial accommodation in Ireland for Ukrainians has been dropped according to Drivetime RTE now.

Also Cornelius Zanbergen on Quora says that most of Pokrovsk, almost all of Myronohrad and most of Chasiv Yar are still under Ukrainian control. Russia claimed to have taken the later last Summer.
