This is what I can't understand. It's ready to go so why not get shovels in the ground in 6 months? Why is it taking so long to get anything done?

I’m not sure myself, but I think maybe in part, as they did with the RO application, they could be waiting to get Metro well underway so that god forbid they is further funding cuts, no one can just cancel the metro and call for the Luas to be extended to the airport…

I really hope the Dept of Transport and other stakeholders don't actually believe they have to wait until the Metro is actually being built before any Luas extension

So have TII actually announced that they are ready to deliver this project but they’re just waiting on a bag of money off the dept of transport?
That way Darragh o Brien will have to pass the buck to Simon Harris as minister of finance as his dept not releasing funds.
It’s crazy this has to be done.

It is principally down to prioritising the projects for funding - that is a political decision which the government have taken, noting that they are now also including some road projects in the funding for this five year period that the previous Minister put on ice.

There seems to be a general lack of understanding of how government works.

Unfortunately just because something has got planning permission and is shovel ready doesn’t mean that it automatically gets construction funding immediately. It then goes into the pot for the Department of Public Expenditure (not Finance) to fund and for cabinet to approve once the final business case is prepared. DPER were never going to sign off everything concurrently in any case.

Things can change depending on what is actually spent - that could move projects forward over this five year investment period.

It completely undermines the governments arguments that Judicial Review is what prevents projects from being built however.

It doesn't really. They are part of the problem, even if not the sole reason. Not having any idea of when projects will exit the planning process also does not help in allocating funding efficiently.

It bothers me that they delayed Luas Finglas to 2029 and then immediately said they were thinking of bringing it forward sooner as if they’re doing us a favour.

It’s not a lack of understanding of how things work- it’s a criticism of how things work.
What I’m saying is the amount of money being spent should be increased to speed up the delivery of this critical piece of infrastructure.
Is there anywhere that shows what the breakdown of spend for transport Infrastructure (including road and rail etc) is on a year by year basis?
So that we can see what they’re actually forecast to spend in 2026 and on what.

Yet he we are with a project that is shovel ready, has an RO but doesn’t have money allocated to it.

Nah, it sounds like the project funding was pushed back by DPER, but the local TDs are trying to build up support to get that decision reversed. I think there’s been a realisation that, the way things are panning out, some of these big projects may not be underway by the time the next election arrives…

I think we all knew most of them wouldnt be under way, the pressing question is will any of the projects be under way by time of the next election.
