First of all, I've never heard of the volga being used in the definition of the border of Europe.

But what you are describing is Landmass. And the fact you left Africa out of it says more about you than anyone who's ever used a map of Europe.

    Post edited & toned down.
Yes, I got the wrong river - its the Ural river.
I've no objection to Afro-Eurasia either, but that physical connection is very narrow in proportion to the landmass sizes.

I think landmass is the way people generally use the word continent except for one - which has a political / conceptual division (ie. a geographic concept being defined as if it is two nation states).
Its the political division that is the issue.

Well most people would use the ural mountains as the primary marker of the border not a river that's maybe 5% of the border length, so I'm not sure if I'm happy for you to be the bell weather of what most people are doing.

But why is a narrow strip of land a good divide between continents but a mountain range isn't?

All continents have some debate over them, is it the Americas or North and south America, is it Oceania or Australia? Is Antarctica even included? They are all arbitrary definitions at the end if the day. Even why is north up? Or the Americas on the left?

We just make up definitions that seem useful at the time and if they are, they catch on and become commonplace.

Anyway this will be my last engagement on the matter.

Voga - Don't you mean the Urals ?

Anyway it's only called Eurasia since the Suez canal split Afro-Eursaia

https://xkcd.com/2742/ I always hate dragging around the larger archipelagos, but I appreciate how the Scandanavian peninsula flexes outward to create a snug pocket for Britain and Ireland.

Why keep building on the limited agricultural land?

I know, Dublin cant throw too many stones in that that regard either.

“We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality.” George Orwell.

The idea that one side of a river basin (the Volga) is one continent and the other side of the same river basin is a different continent ….. is surely white-supremacist, nonsense.

It is indeed nonsense, but not for the reason suggested. It's nonsense because neither the Volga river nor the Volga river basin are considered to form the boundary between Europe and Asia, which by convention is formed by the Ural Mountains - Caspian Sea - Caucasus Mountains.

There are no hard-and-fast rules for determining the boundaries of continents; the boundaries are matters of convention. If you want to treat Eurasia as a single continent on the grounds that they touch one another and are not separated by water, well, fine. But would it not the follow that Eurasia-Africa is also a single continent? And that the Americas are a single continent? (We can hardly argue that new continents are crated by the excavation of a canal. And if we do argue that, then we have to assert that a new continent was created in the western half of Europe with the completion of the Rhein-Danube canal in 1992.)

Tl;dr: Continents are defined by convention, and the conventions are inconsistent. The specific practice of treating Europe and Asia (and Africa) as distinct continents goes back to the Greeks, in the fifth century BC. In adopting this classification they can hardly be accused of being white suprmemacists, since white supremacism is a product of the enlightenment, which only came along about 2,300 years later.

If one mountain range (the Urals) and one river (also Ural) can be deemed by convention to be a dividing line between continents (whether convened 3,000 or 400 years ago) then what is to stop any mountain range & any river being deemed to have such meaning.
Ireland alone could contain 7 or 8 continents by such conventions.

People, lets loosely say, powerful people in their day(s), came up with such ideas (for the worst reason(s) : maybe, possibly control ) – that doesn’t mean they have to be accepted unquestioningly century after century indefinitely.

On a map, Panama 67km and Sinai/Suez 120km are noticeable extremely narrow geographic features between vast landmasses.
Whereas from a plane or the ISS, the roughly 2,630km Ural Mountains / river shows no reason why it manifests as a boundary between notional continents – with nothing but similar land visible for thousands of km in every direction.
I’s just like, my opinion man 🙂

Not a single waffle house according to that map in California? 🤔

I lived in San Francisco many moons ago and there were quite a few - including the IHOP chain - in the city!

Waffle House is a chain, not the concept of a waffle house.
