Has anyone been successful converting their clear mobile sim to an eSIM via the option on iPhone? I presume it’s there as Vodafone offer eSIM but don’t want to risk it unless others have tried it.

Ah that explains it so, as I had the VoLTE option when I was with GoMo, thanks for the explanation

The VoLTE option can still show with providers that have a supported carrier file, like GoMo & Sky Mobile. It's up to the provider afaik.

I received SIM card today but my old number will be ported next week. Is it worth of inserting the SIM today? Is it active with temporary number as my billing period already started 21 Nov?

Yes it is active…insert it and just contact them on chat…mine moved in a minute from vodafone.

They can only move port date/time for Vodafone and AnPost customers. For other networks you'll need to wait until your scheduled date.

I am with 48, but I understand is it active with temporary number on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 353 ✭✭MadDogGreener

Unlike other networks, the sim isn't provisioned with a temporary number.

Can also confirm this. No life from the sim until my number was ported over to it. Port took less than 5 mins coming from sky mobile.

And I had a family member porting from vodafone and sim had life in it prior to porting strangely.

So I'm now using the clear mobile SIM in my broadband router for a few days (swapped from 48) and initially had a bad download/upload number. So I forced the 4G download band onto Band 3 and suddenly got n77 band for 5G and now having a solid performance all the time.

Now how solid performance translate into speed is different depending on where you are but I'm getting about 15% more download speed than with 48 and my upload especially went up by 50% which is nice.

Saving 3€ over 48 with better speed.

And as it's a used only for broadband it was easy to test as there was no porting involved.

Now let's see if this stays or if I get throttled after a while (not using that much) but as they can not dictate what device I use to access the internet it should really not happen unless I start downloading gigantic amounts.

The only reason I'm not moving my Phone over is that for 10€ on a Lyca Long Term plan I get 100 international minutes just in case, once that expires, I will shop around and see what I can get.

Well giving how Lyca is now on Eir (which has good coverage) and 10€ including international calls is better than 9.99€ plus another provider, at this time there is no need for a 3rd party.

Eir having good coverage is a funny joke.. their "99% 5G coverage" is just 4G being cranked with maximum power and set to display 5G using DSS which results in worse 5G speeds than if you just used their 4G.

Tried it before and can confirm it didn't work. A suck it and see approach!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭biebiebie

    @pfftdetail

You really have it in for Eir mobile don't you! ;-)

All jokes aside. Going to get a GoMo sim on Monday and give it a whirl. I've done some local research and it could be good in my home location. ClearMobile being the benchmark to beat.

I think as with all things it depends on where you are. I have an Eir Mast near me that is not that busy and similar on most of the routes I take, so my Lyca/Eir experience is fine.

In fact, I used Eir Mobile Broadband for nearly 1 year as my main broadband, as I only can get the up to 100 crap via landline. The only reason I am no longer with eir is that 48 offered similar for way less money.

Really as with all mobile it depends on where you are / go.

I live in Cork, but work in limerick. Switched from gomo to clear. My gomo sim would get nearly 1 gig speed on 5g in limerick, but reception around Cork where I am was poor so switched. My clear sim on the other hand gives me better and more consistent speeds in Cork (never a gig though), but I found out I have essentially no network in work.

I was with Eir / GoMo for years, it would always show full 5G bars but websites would refuse to load. 3mbps speed test results on 5G with full 5G bars was terrible. Eir's DNS would also block a **** load of domains, including iCloud Private Relay, which really annoyed me.

I found the very same with GoMo particularly over the last 12 months, like yourself, I've been on the Eir network for the last 10 years or so, so I am in a good position to give an opinion. I see people saying that @pfftdetail has a agenda against Eir, I'm assuming he is just trying to give his experiences with them, similar to what I am saying.

@Yggr of Asgard does make the point that all networks have problems in different areas, so one's experiences with a particular network more than likely won't be the same for someone else.

I will roll in behind Aquos76 and pfftdetail, the last 12 months has seen slowing of gomo even with full bars on 5G. I do concur that reception with eir can be better in certain locations but the 5G using 4G network was a pure tactic

Thanks everyone for the Eir/GoMo feedback.

I'll be ordering and testing a GoMo sim next week to see for myself. Possibly I'll end up in agreement ;-)

I got one 9.99 sim the past few days from Clear for my backup 5G router and it's doing great - 350 down and that's in a particular spot where I couldn't get above 20 or 30 down with 48.ie, GoMo or Three so very happy with that.

Now, I'm thinking of porting my phone sim from GoMo 9.99 to Clear but I'd like to know if Clear has any problems with sms codes from banks, revolut, paypal etc, other services etc?

    I tried a search but ya know…

Anyone try and order a sim from Clearmobile today? My payment wouldn't go through (via PTSB app, I was getting a verification number not assigned error which doesn't make sense), tried a second time, same issue.

However, I ended up getting 2 emails from Clearmobile with contract summary attached, no payment confirmation and their online chat is offline. Any ideas?

you'll get the summary email by just going from stage 1 to 2.

Got my bill, 9.99 plan and they applied it from day I asked so there was adjustments to make it 9.70.

This one is the account that shows 9.99
