The UK is becoming more authoritarian.

Time to put childish things aside.

Isn't there more chance of being arrested in the UK for what you say online there, than even in Russia?

Yeah, they bitch and whine about JD Vance criticising the UK for it's lack of free speech and then this happens proving him to be 100% right.

Got so worked up he had to be brought to the hospital with high blood pressure. Man some people really are in too deep with this culture war shte.

Whatever about British authoritarianism I honestly think the Graham Linehan story is one of the saddest in Irish entertainment in recent years.

The man is, or more likely was, a comedy writing genius. But there's a fine line between genius and madness that he has long since crossed, leaving him largely isolated and destitute.

His recent opinions and actions on a range of issues - particularly for me regarding the Middle East (I steer clear of the transgenderism debate) are so at odds with the man he once was that it's difficult to watch what he has become. And there's no way back that I can see, he's gone off the deep end and - if anything - seems to be getting worse. I think he'll end up being sectioned.

Mod - thread locked as Linehan is before the courts for another matter.

This is a victory for common sense. The judge accepted that Linehan gave credible evidence and the complainant's evidence lacked credibility. The finding of 'criminal damage' to his/their phone was judged to be based on heat of the moment anger on Linehan's part, perfectly understandable IMO and hopefully will be successfully appealed.

The OP was about his arrest at Heathrow following complaints by a trans activist over posts he made on X. After a long delay it was decided that no prosecution would follow.

Hopefully both these events will give the British police some backbone in future dealings with trans-activism.

Imagine going from being probably Ireland's greatest ever comedy writer to this.

Imagine going after what is probably Ireland’s greatest ever comedy writer on this sort of trumped-up nonsense.

No, never would have have foreseen him going from Irelands greatest ever comedy writer to Irelands greatest ever anti gender-ideology activist. Who'd a thunk it.

So who's 'Ireland's greatest comedy writer' now that Graham Linehan has been 'cancelled'?

BBC: Speaking outside court on Tuesday, Linehan said there was "a group of dangerous men who are determined to bully women and girls, and to misuse the courts and police in furtherance of a misogynistic agenda".

He added: "I'm proud to have stood up to them and I will continue to do so." 👍️

He's supposed to not get stressed or panicked about being surrounded by heavily armed police and arrested as soon as he landed at the airport?

It does look like the individual who claimed harassment by Linehan specifically went to that event to create a scene. The clips of what they were up to don't look good for them.

Funnily enough, on the Six One news, they opened the story with referencing his conviction for criminal damage, which doesn't seem to be detailed in the online story.

Did he say anything about his conviction for criminal damage to the property of a child?

Father Ted was released in 1995 and lampooned a former sacred cow, it would have been considered blasphemous even 10 years earlier.

Fast forward 30 years and there's been numerous new ideologies that have parallels with religion - zealots who lecture and call non-believers bigots, people who quietly believe, people who quietly roll their eyes and people who openly speak out and mock these beliefs.

There has been some rolling back on transgender ideology - concerns about puberty blockers and children being rushed through surgery, the IOC rolling back on the inclusion of trans women in women's sport and trans women prisoners in women's prisons.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a Father Tedesque comedy based on all this in 10-15 years time.

Is it breasts and willys we all need now father? It’s just that I’ve brought my new Christmas 3 piece suit and I don’t think the breasts will fit in there when they grow.

He's put up some clips of the day in question on Twitter.

He shouldn't have thrown their phone on the ground but the person in question was there to provoke people.

Whether you agree with Glinner or not, I think it's safe to say that he has developed some sort of mental illness around the whole thing. His actions are not those of someone of sound mind.

It could be studied in the future as one of the worst cases of 'Can't log off, someone is wrong on the internet' in history. Man seriously needs to go into a digital detox retreat.

I disagree with your assertion. You can disagree with me. Thats how normal conversation and discourse works.

If I find out where you will be tomorrow afternoon and show up there to ask you to repeat your assertions while I film you, would you still be saying that you are the one with the case of "Cant log off because someone on the internet is wrong"?

    Serious question.

I imagine Oisin was probably speaking more to Glinners terminally online activities over the past few years (rather than this specific harassment case) which have seen him p*ss away his entire career/marriage/life in general.

Well JK Rowling has been doing similar but mostly speaking sense in my opinion. Yes she's kind of been cancelled, but lots of people agree with her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,510 ✭✭✭✭volchitsa

Yeah, it's inexplicable that a MAN should decide that he cared enough about women being harassed and children being given experimental treatment on very dodgy grounds to put his head above the parapet and get the same sort of treatment as women in the media and publishing got when they spoke up.

I mean, he was a MAN. What did he care? 🙄

You're missing my point, I'm not talking about the case, I totally agree that the person was completely out of line with the camera and seems unhinged.

I'm talking about Graham Linehan and his descent into madness.

If I was on the internet so much arguing with everyone under the sun about a topic that I lost my wife, my family, my job and still was literally posting about it all day, every non stop then yes, there might be a case of me suffering from an extreme version of this:

    image.png

Or do you think his actions around this whole subject and the lengths he has gone to (including practically ruining his whole life) are that of someone sound of mind?

Is it not possible to debate something serious without ruining your life, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,758 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

I got the reference the first time you referred to it. I am a regular visitor to XKCD.

Ive not been following the Linehan "case" in depth. If you believe in a notion strongly, then I do not consider it unhinged to post about it regularly. I dont know what happened with his wife.

If you want to give me a summary of his views, I can tell you whether I think he was unhinged or not.

JK Rowling is the absolute antithesis of Glinner when it comes to communicating about this subject. He's a raving madman in comparison.

OK. I am going to leave it there. I personally don't care enough any more.

"The finding of 'criminal damage' to his/their phone was judged"

Her phone not him or that her.

Oh by the way common sense my arse. Linehan is a nasty, small minded, transphobic, horrible, vile person. Enough said.

That evil person speaks no sense. She is a nasty, horrible person. I am glad I never gave her a single cent or watched any of that trash she made. She is a small minded transphobic bigot.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
