    That's exactly what I was thinking. If they have figured out the problem/miscalculation, then they can just adjust for it. But if they haven't figured out the problem then they might need to go conservative which would give Max the opportunity to win the next races.

    It's hard to see him win the championship without a DNF for the Mclarens which is outside of his control. But winning the remaining races is within his control.

    I have to say I'm not a fan of Max. He seems like an unpleasant guy. But he's really impressed a lot of people with his attitude and approach to the championship this year. Great racer.

    Do McLaren now need to designate Piastri as #2 for the remainder?

    I.e. This weekend say Max is 1st.. Piastri 3rd and Lando 4th with 2 laps to go… do they give the swap order?

    Piastri is unlikely to be ahead of Lando at all.

    1. They have developed the car to suit Lando as far back as the run up to Canada race.
    2. Allegedly turning down Piastri power unit. Mexico.
    3. Breaking papaya rules in Monza.
    4. Vegas. Ordering Lando to coast but not doing likewise for Oscar. Being OK with an Oscar DQ to save Lando.

    There's an internet conspiracy theory in action!

    No. But if Piastri is out of running for Abu Dhabi and Verstappen is still in with a shout then they will make him become a number 2.

    They have been too open with their need to have 2 number 1s all season to change it now. Zac Brown has apparently said that he would prefer to lose the driver's championship than pick a number 1 which is commendable (if a little naïve).
