Be great to have him back, he brings some spice!

Cant see that happening as Newey leave RB because of Horner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,985 ✭✭✭Acosta

He probably deserves it too. I don't particularly like the guy, but he's head and shoulders above the two McClaren drivers. Given how close the championship is, recent races have been awful. Since Piastri went off the boil, it's been really poor.

It's still in Landos hands. If Lando wins the sprint and race, he's champion in Qatar no matter what Max or Oscar does. Rules are rules of course but I don't think the skid wear gave him a big advantage to nurse a sick car home to second. Lando is still well capable of winning this.

    This too shall pass.

He’s managed the pressure well with Piastri chasing him but with Verstappen back in the mix is a different type of pressure, sink or swim time for him now.

If Max wins with Norris 2nd in Qatar sprint, main race and Abu Dhabi race, Max only gains 15 points on Norris. Lando can afford to let Max off into the sunset and concentrate on the other 18 drivers.

    This too shall pass.

Was going to point out same. But I'm guessing Horner's name adds clicks to the article, so no harm adding him to the mix.

I also don't think Laurence Stroll will give up control of team to Horner which is (apparently) what Horner wants.

Still see him leading a takeover of Alpine as the obvious next step for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 315 ✭✭Paddy_Mag

Id wonder if that's true in any way. If AM want to win, they need a winning mentality and Horner will bring that.

Time will tell. There is always that Alpine link but Lawrence Stroll is no fool. If he thinks Horner can bring AM success he will go after him

AM have poached so many people from Red Bull it looks like they're rebuilding the team within AM, presumably as a strategy to get Max.

If Newey won't work with Horner surely that's a hard No to hiring him.

Appreciate the logic but driving like that leaves him at the mercy of a mistimed safety car, red flag puncture etc.

He should be looking to win next week and finish it off mathematically before the last race.

Look what happened last time Max needed to win in Abu Dhabi!

I still expect Norris to wrap the championship up in Qatar but could you imagine if Mclaren managed to lose the championship to Verstappen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,808 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Depends on Piastri imo. If he snaps out of it and finds the mentality to make it a 3 man showdown, advantage swings back to Max. If Piastri keeps his crumbled form then Lando probably wins.

Really shows up red bull's disaster of a 2nd seat. Imagine if they had a 2nd driver who could get involved now to support max. I've heard absolutely nobody even consider if Yuki could do anything to help (mainly because he can't)

    oklahoma…….

Is this the most exciting championship in recent years?

everyone is looking at the 2 papaays?

    come on… Max is coming

Imagine if Lando didn't score points in Qatar, or very little and there were only a hand full of points between Max/Lando/Oscar for Abu Dhabi. That would be an incredible atmosphere.

Hamilton not sounding happy with how things are going or optimistic for next season.

He can be a little down on himself after disappointing races but I still think there's a good chance he'll retire or take a year out at the end of this season

    Red Bull: 391 pts

    Max: 366 pts

So over 90% of the team's points come from him, impressive and also depressing stat that. Shame he's not had a teammate to help take points off the McLaren drivers but if he doesn't manage to nick the title it'll be because the car just wasn't good enough over the course of the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,033 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

I was listening to the Race podcast this morning and they said that when Lewis drove for Mercedes he tended to do his media duties later - which gave him time to come down after the race and it led to more nuanced views from him. Whereas with Ferrari it's straight into media duties with no follow up so you just get the emotional reactions. Thought that was interesting.

He won't take a year out, if he steps away he's never coming back. I think it's all about the car they produce for 2026. If it can compete and if it suits his style, happy Lewis is back. If not, you could see a Damon Hill final season approach being followed (he might want to retire mid-season).

Exactly this. That second RB seat hasn't been there to support Max at all over the course of the season - the relative impact of that can't be overstated.

If Max doesn't win the WDC this year (as is still very likely), I think it will be the clearest example in modern times of the season's best driver losing the WDC. As good as the McLaren drivers have been (at times), Max is on another level.

It's such a coincidence that Mclaren get a double disqualification for skid wear issues in the next race after stories came out after Brazil of multiple teams using skid blocks that expand when heated that reduced wear and letting the teams run the cars lower

Why would it be a coincidence? If there are reports of teams trying to avoid rules then obviously the FIA will investigate further the following race. I heard Jonathan Noble on the Race podcast say that he had heard that McLaren were very marginal (but on the legal side) in Brazil so makes sense to keep an eye on it. It's not a conspiracy…

Its not a coincidence, its how a team choose to setup the ride hight, they took a gamble and they lost

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,081 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Not really, sounds like they were marginal with plank wear in Brazil as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,900 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

I thought the plank was an identical item supplied to all teams. If the teams are making them themselves out of dodgy materials, the whole idea is null and void.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,081 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

It is more how the teams load the cars with DF and where it will wear some of the plank. Plank wear is very normal, but McLaren went past the threshold of it.

What is more intriging though is that they wore more at the rear, and they usually pitch their car at the front to run a very flat aero platform, they have front suspension that really helps with this. It could just be a bad calculation on their part.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,320 ✭✭✭Hijpo

It didn't seem like the track was particularly bumpy. Maybe a miscalculation on ride height and suspension travel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,081 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Possibly yes, also sounds like McLaren have to push the ride height to get the performance it needs. But it is unusual that Piastris car failed the same way, he had DRS open a lot which would keep the rear ride height a tad higher. If there was a miscalculation, it was a bad one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,900 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

They also lost running in Q2 in Vegas and with wet sessions, not alot of time to prove the figures re ride height.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,081 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

This is true, but then so did all teams but the rest didn't have the issue. I think it is a one off, the only potential curve ball now is that they feel the need to be conservative with it for the remaining races, and sacrifice performance over it.

It's lost on some that Piastri should be happy with the DQ
