We do, as we’ve seen with what Ireland have achieved over the last 3 years.

2 six nations (incl a grand slam) and a triple crown in the other year ? With this batch of players and coaches

If James Ryan was anything other than a Leinster player he'd have been cast off years ago. He shouldn't be pulling on an Ireland jersey any time soon if right is right.

Listening to Malcolm Marx he makes a great point, team environment is everything.

Ireland has an environment where mediocrity & excuses are accepted, which has undoubtedly fed into the sloppy, illdiciplined performances we’ve been getting.

Don’t fool yourself, nothing will be done about it either. The only way to solve it is the cut the culprits out which are POC and Fogarty. Otherwise we’ll be having the same conversation come the 6N.

why POC and Fogarty? Why not Goodman and Farrell?

Me too, in a massive way.

I've just read an article with Farrells post game thoughts. We've just had our backsides handed to us by SA and he's talking about how Ireland had a Lions front row and how the scrum "has been" world class. Talking about learnings and lads getting experience etc..…

This team peaked in Oct 23. We lost a QF because we persisted kicking to the corners from penalties with a non functioning line-out. That continued and we somehow managed a 6N win. We did well in SA that summer but we are seeing a trend here in terms of our performance levels. It's not like it's happened overnight. We are on a downward trajectory.

But its beginning to feel like, the coaches and team themselves are immune from many genuine criticism. I am going against the grain here but I think we have print journalists here who do question those involved but it's evident the disdain the Irish management have for those journalists. It's grand spouting "team of us" positivity and drivel when you're playing like you are the best team in the world. Our performances are getting worse.

Any genuine fan knows that, the NZ team beat us in Chicago is the worst they've been in a long time. We had a run out against Japan and won and we beat a poor and exhausted Australian team at home.

I am hoping that the Andy Farrell we see in front of the cameras is very different than the one away from it. If he isn't, then we're in for a tough 2 years ahead.

Because our set piece and work upfront is what’s costing us, there isn’t much Goodman can do if the forwards can’t secure any clean ball.

If this area improves and our attack is still rubbish then Goodman would be next on my hit list.

New coaching setup will be O’Gara, POC, Flannery and Felix. Lancaster will be involved also but will stay as head coach out west.

O'Connell, Best and Cronin all made their debuts more than 15 years ago so aren't relevant to this discussion. I'll give you Ross and Henry though.

The following tweet is also interesting, phog:

Iirc, when Ireland played France in the 2023 6 Nations it was World #1 vs #2 in the rankings. But not only that it was the teams with the best discipline, in terms of cards at least etc.

So if I'm reading that correctly, in that time, we've gone from being the team with the best discipline, to the team with the worst.

    It's a massive issue now.

Poor discipline is a byproduct of being beaten in literally every facet of the game

Hansen is out with a reoccurrence of the foot injury which caused him to miss the Lion's test matches. This is what comes of playing unfit players. He was reported as being a doubt last Thursday or Friday but managed to come through the Captain's run, albeit with quite a lot of strapping. Now he's out for who knows how long. A ridiculous situation.

If only the provinces had a specialist FB available

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Could be wrong here, but I thought the reason he was a doubt was in relation to a finger injury tho?

It was his hand that was strapped in the captains run due to a finger injury, I don’t think there were any worries over his foot last week.

A disappointing series overall for Ireland. Lost to New Zealand, taken apart by South Africa.

We beat Japan, but they are a tier 2 nation so there's limited credit for that, and we beat Australia, but then again, Australia lost every game of this tour, including against Italy, so perhaps not much of a scalp after all.

What do we have to show for it? The positives are that Ryan Baird took it up a level, and Paddy McCarthy has emerged as a good prop. Other than that I am really struggling.

Ireland are going backwards at a rate of knots, Farrell gambled that familiar faces who he has relied on in the past would get the job done for him and this gamble didn't pay off. We are coming into the 6 Nations now and I think 3rd place is firmly on the cards, and that's mainly because we won't lose to Scotland, Wales or Italy at home (if we do, it's time to panic).

Our pack will improve when we get Joe McCarthy back, we miss his bulk. Baird should not play lock for Ireland IMO.

In the outside backs we have problems all over the place and this needs a major rethink. Aki and Henshaw are done. McCloskey and Farrell are stop gaps at best and McCloskey can't seem to stay fit. He absolutely needs to bring some fresh faces into midfield.

On the wings, I think Lowe has to be on the way out, he has lost at least a yard of pace and is quite slow, and I think TOB, while pacy, is a pretty average player. Maybe average is harsh, but he strikes me as a fairly rudimentary player who is rarely going to do anything special. Kind of reminds me of the guys who used to get picked on the wing for Ireland based on how well they hit rucks.

And he needs to stop picking a centre at 23 and having Crowley cover FB. It is stupid.

Ringrose is our best 13, Hansen is our best 14, Keenan is our best 15. These are the only 3 lads in the outside backs that I think should be feeling comfortable right now. Outside of that, everything has to be looked at.

If it's getting to the stage where we are the worst disciplined team in the world, then it's a byproduct of poor coaching.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

I'd agree entirely awec, with regards Baird not playing lock.

If you take the 2 heavyweight packs we played against this calendar year (SA and France) it's interesting we had pretty different approaches in terms of our bench.

Vs France, we went 6/2, McCarthy and Beirne starting, with Ryan and Baird on the bench (as well as Conan).

Va SA, we had 2 back-rows on the bench (Prendergast and Conan), with Baird from 6 covering lock.

    Neither approach worked particularly well.

It's not just poor coaching tho. It's poor coaching and poor execution by the players.

    It's both.

i don't think Ringrose is any great shakes these days. I'd happily see him replaced.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,811 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

We shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater, Ringrose is still the best we have at 13. We also aren't going to suddenly change the entire back line, there has to be some level of continuity.

He's also only 30, he has 2 or 3 good years left in the tank.

The other positions are far more urgent issues.

Ringtone plays 13 like a crash all 12. He's a terrible distributor, rarely passes to his wings. His defense has been exposed repeatedly this autumn, and every top team will know to target him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,010 ✭✭✭jacothelad

He is the most talented 13 but he is playing poorly by his historical standards….and if only he could pass ……😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,048 ✭✭✭TRC10

I don’t think the issue is he can’t pass. He’s thrown some beauties over his career. The issue is he doesn’t pass for whatever reason. Be it by instruction or selfishness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 615 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

    Good summation!

A new younger face needs to be included for the 6 nations squad at the expense of one of our centres. McCloskey, Aki, Henshaw and Farrell are all probably deserving of their involvement but collectively it seems negligent not to prepare for the future. Alternatively add a full back so that we can prioritise 12 for Jamie Osbourne. Cathal Forde, Dan Kelly and Postlewait look like they could be decent options for consideration in the centre at least bring one in for the series. At full back we are a bit thin on the ground around the provinces.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 398 ✭✭Bart97

We’ve shown poor dicipline in every game so far. The whole reason we only led by 5 at HT v Australia was thanks to our inability to defend a pretty ordinary driving maul repeatedly…7 pens in that half alone despite being on top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52 ✭✭shimmieandshake

Perhaps the best unintended consequence of the autumn: Mack's emergence as a viable back-up 15 should free up Osbourne to play 12 moving forwards.

Ringrose should remain at 13 for now, but I'm hoping the Wales game in the Six Nations can be used to blood Gavin or Postlethwaite at 13 too.

Its what most fans are calling for yet Farrell doesnt really see him as an option at 12 yet & tbf neither do Leinster when they are fully stacked, he gets moved to wing or 15 too much for my liking
