Liam McNamee involved after playing for Spain in the u20 RWC.

Good to see Devine and Naughton paired at half back. Young team.

Nice Connacht side, but the lock options look very callow compared to Ulster's options there (Charlie Irvine and Joe Hopes starting, with Matthew Dalton at 6).

I don't know anything about Oisin McNicholas, and only know of Liam McNamee because of the Spain link. I have heard Leo Anic is very highly rated, but he's pretty young here.

Would be keen to see Cian Brady off the bench (alongside the obvious talents of Sean Walsh & Daniel Ryan), he looked good at underage I thought. Connacht are bringing through some good young options at centre.

Early try for Matty Dalton, after a dreadful missed tackle by Finn Treacy.

Close range try for Oisin M Nicholas after an extended period of pressure in the Ulster 22. 7-7.

Ulster try on kick return, Ethan Graham set up by a great break by Bradley McNamara.

Finn Treacy finishes a lovely try, Connacht's midfield has been excellent. 14-12 to the hosts.

Bryn Ward try breaking off a maul, 21-12.

Another Dalton try, 28-12. Our defence is awful, Ulster look like scoring every time they get the ball.

Matthew Devine try, showed great pace to follow up an Oisin McCormack kick. 28-17.

Niche comment here but as someone who uses the Connacht website all too much, their new one is beautiful.

Eagles game finished 28-22 to Ulster, 4 tries apiece. A good effort against a much more experienced Ulster team, and pack in particular.

    Any forwards impress?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,444 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Forwards were outmatched to be honest, which is to be expected given 7/8 of Ulster's pack were senior pros vs two of ours. Best performance imo was John Devine with Oisin McCormack maybe the standout forward if I had to pick one.

Leo has been a monster underage. He's a giant of a man, 6" 5" or 6 and his younger brother Anders is already 6'4" at 16.

Anders plays soccer as well and it's awful funny the amount of free kicks given against him, they are given because he's a giant not because he's fouling. If a guy tries to shoulder him he bounces off him and falls down about two feet away from him. 😁

You don't want to be throwing a kid in at the deep end but Leo is already physically strong enough to play senior rugby.

Their dad is not a big man, big shoulders but he's only about 6' tall.

He didn't look out of place physically, and scrummaged at tighthead lock which is quite impressive considering he's still in school. I imagine he'll go straight into the academy next summer.

Liam McNamee has a bit about him, at over 2m he has the height and seems to have the frame to carry the necessary bulk. He's also a decent athlete considering he was playing junior rugby last year and probably didn't have much exposure to serious S&C until he joined the Spain set up. Perhaps worth taking a look at considering how few second rows we produce.

Cian Prendergast was the most impressive player in defeated Ireland. If possible (probably No), I hope to watch him at Dexcom.

Every Irish player made a mistake yesterday. Some very established players made severe mistakes.

Cian did well. He’s abrasive with a high work rate. He will be better for these games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 313 ✭✭Paddy_Mag

True, but to say Cian Prendergast was the "most impressive player" is utter nonsense. He dropped two restarts. They were awful mistakes to make at this level.

We all have our player bias! Let Kita enjoy his eh!

Lineout work looks particularly impressive and put himself about alright. Pity about the restart because otherwise looked very good. Quietly working his way into the reckoning, think we will see him become a regular feature in the Match day 23 fairly soon

    .

Those drops were unfortunate but to be fair to him I don't think he would have much if any experience as part of that lifting pod, as we wouldn't be expecting to lose both Ryan and Baird. It's a minor detail that can be ironed out, more importantly he showed that he can have a positive impact at the highest level and I think finally made the step up to legitimate test match option after a couple of years in and around the squad.

He's clearly won Farrell's trust, as he could easily have picked Henderson or brought Conan on instead.

Prendergast was excellent yesterday. Fair enough he wasn't perfect, but he absolutely did not look out of place physically against the worlds best. I hope he has many more appearances in green in the future.

The restart was a poor mistake but he won a massive turnover penalty not long after when the Boks smelt blood. Himself and McCarthy spared our blushes a couple of times off the bench.

Hansen has injured his foot again another recurrence of the same injury from the lions tour. Seems to be struggling to fully recover from whatever it was. Hopefully he won't be out for too long

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 Lancey Howard

Perhaps, for the longevity of his career, a long layoff is exactly what is needed. It seems that this injury is 2 years old, since NZ in Paris. If he can come back fully recovered I have no problem waiting until next season. I especially hope he is not put back into the 6N unnecessarily

Seems like an age since we played, what sort of team will we have for Sharks?

Hansen out but will Prendergast, Blade, Bolton be available and is it too soon to expect to see gilbert.
