The section from 12th lock to McEvoy's now appears to be finished. No barriers at either end. The surface is decent - very fine gravel, easily rideable on a road bike.

Is it possible to cycle the canal from the 12 Lock to Sallins on a road bike - aka, are the cycle path upgrade works substantionally finished?

You can now cycle from the city all the way to Sallins on a road bike. The newer sections are a compacted fine grit surface but fine to cycle on.

The12th Lock to Hazelhatch is the only part where you'll be on the northern bank. Some of the bridges require cyclists to either dismount or go over but generally signposted.

Great to see the 12th lock to Hazelhatch is finally open. Looking forward to trying it out soon. Just Sallins to Edenderry to be upgraded now. Hopefully Kildare County Council are a lot more effective than their counterparts in Fingal where the missing link on the Royal Canal Greenway is taking forever.

Great that this is open now. What's the approx distance from Sallins to Inchicore via the Greenway?

Just did it yesterday, it's about 26km. Switching to the North bank at McEvoy's and back at the 12th lock

    @Seth Brundle already mentioned that

Thats very doable on a regular bike and would be extremely easy on an e-bike hopefully it opens that option to the 1000s stuck in cars on the N7/M7 daily!

Quick update on the footbridge over the Barrow Line

Looks like the last bits to do are tie the ramp into the first suspended section, and finish the ramp to ground level

The Greenway (Blueway) is fenced off just before Vicarstown as you head south towards Athy. Seems like they're repairing the stone work at the walls where the barges moor up

    1000035899.jpg 1000035884.jpg 1000035888.jpg

    Detour options (heading south)

1 - At the Courtwood bridge, turn right, follow the Courtwood road to Vicarstown

2 - At the same bridge, turn left and follow the canal on the opposite (east) bank. Be aware, it turns into a slopfest.

3 - Just before the Camac aquaduct, there's a walkway leading out, again, to the Courtwood road. Follow around to Vicarstown. This is probably the simplest route, as it keeps you on the Greenway for the most time

Finally got to head out the Grand Canal this morning joining it at Rialto and going as far as Ardclough. The new section of Greenway is perfect and the surface is well compacted. Two cyclists and three dog-walkers encountered.

Great that this was finally done, it was rough enough beforehand.

Your first image shows the Ballymakaily Lock Keeper's Cottage which is very different to the traditional cottage provided to the keepers. It is likely that it was designed by Thomas Omer who was heavily involved in the canal design from the 1750s on.
It is likely that the ivy-covered ruins in your second photo is also one of Omer's lock keeper's 2 storey houses despite the absence of a nearby lock (according to section 4.1.3 on Page 18 of the SDCC Preliminary Design report).

Thanks for the information SB. The only bridge on that section seems to be an accommodation bridge and Google maps has it as Gollierstown Bridge.

Yeah it looks strange there on its own. However, I think (and may be wrong) it was built in the early days of the canal construction and was used in relation to the nearby quarry which provided stone for the canal (I think this quarry may be why the canal comes swings northwards before it arrives in Dublin)

I love seeing these indentations from tow ropes in the stonework!

Cycled from 12th Lock to Sallins today. Bike got distroyed on the new gravel paths with grit getting everywhere. Be warned!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,840 ✭✭✭cletus

Yeah, par for the course on those gritted paths

Cycled some back roads in Kildare the other day. Bike got destroyed on the roads with grit, muck and cowshit getting everywhere. Be warned!

I shouldn't be snide, and no offence meant but it's January folks, cycling outside except in very rare circumstances means giving the bike a wash down afterwards

Some good news, hopefully it's not just a recycling of a previous announcement, but 6.8 million euro for the Sallins to the Kildare/Offaly border section of the Grand canal Greeway, hopefully this means works will commence soon.

Isn't this why we have winter/beater bikes? Something you mind but don't care deeply for, and perhaps costing sub-5k although I reckon @fat bloke could sorely test those parameters.

I tried the 12th lock to McEvoy's on Thursday evening, and it was great if not windy and wet. It was difficult to get through McEvoys, it was busy and there was plenty of beer garden furniture to navigate around, the car park was full too, with the ramp out blocked. It would have been impossible with a cargo bike, it was so narrow that it was difficult enough on a road bike.

Having taken the train to Monasterevin, cycled to Edenderry and then on to Tullamore on the Greenway a few months ago, I decided to complete the Tullamore to the Shannon section today. The east wind certainly helped although there was no sunshine this time but overall it didn't seem as enjoyable as the sections further east. Other than a few interesting ruined castles and Canal hotels, there were no towns, very few locks and virtually no visible wildlife. The fresh tarmac surface from near Pollagh onwards together with the wind helped the average speed of 26kph.

At Shannon Harbour, it was almost impossible to figure out where the canal stopped and the river began given the amount of flooding in the area. I continued on to Shannon Bridge where I crossed into Connaught and made it to Ballinasloe in good time for a coffee before catching the 1.50pm train back home. That leaves the Lowtown to Edenderry section still to do but I might need a gravel bike for that unless Kildare CoCo get their act together soon.

Anyone know the status / condition of the edenderry to sallins section? Doable on a road bike?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,840 ✭✭✭cletus

Sallins to Digby Bridge is fine on a road bike.

Digby Bridge to Robertstown is not at all doable on a road bike. I've done it on a gravel bike with 40mm tyres, but even that's slow going in spots. You'd probably put a road route together handy enough, though.

Robertstown to Edenderry is similar to the Digby bridge Robertstown section. Not suitable for a road bike, but there are roads you can follow.

If you get to Robertstown, might be worth following the Barrow Blueway heading towards Athy. You could stop and turn at any number of towns; Rathangan, Monasterevin, Fishers town, Vicarstown, or the whole way to Athy. Plenty of options for spots to stop for coffee and food too.

Haven't gone as far as Edenderry but Digbys Bridge to Robertstown can be muddy after rain and has some roots to get over. Grand on 35s but tiring enough if they're slick tyres. 25s would be fine after a dry period but not so enjoyable at the moment.

Was just about to ask the same question? Thanks for description by others. Are there any works going on by Kikdare Cc? Hopefully they can move things along quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭nilhg

There was a 6.8 million euro allocation from TII for these works earlier this year, see near the bottom of the link below

Not sure if there's a contractor appointed yet, or when works might start

What's the deal with the new timber kissing gates at Hazelhatch? Do McEvoys own the towpath here? Every time I pass, it's more difficult to negotiate, not impossible, but definitely not accessible.
