Finally got fibre broadband yesterday from eir, they gave me the tv package with it ( got very good deal, tv for very little extra ). Quite impressed with the tv, plenty of channels, all the important ones in HD, all the main streaming apps, including RTE Player, though it's not preloaded, you must download it yourself from the Playstore and you can record from almost all channels, including CH4 which I was surprised at. Of course no recording of any BBC or RTE channels, which is a drawback, however the availability of RTE Player does help. If something could be done about some access to recording or some kind of on demand for the BBC channels, it would be quite a good basic tv service for small monthly subscription.

Android box. It's a tiny little thing, about the same size as a Sky Stream box I'd say. Free Amazon Prime Video is a nice addition also.

How much are you getting the TV for, out of curiosity?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭galtee boy

I'd prefer not to say, it was a salesman at the door, we did quite a bit of negotiating, but he left happy with the sale and Im happy with the deal. I have to complement eir so far ( eir, please don't make me eat my words! ), they have been a pleasure to deal with, the broadband speed (1gb ) is lightening fast, the tv worked within 10 mins, they set up my landline within 24 hours, the installer was a gentleman and did an extremely neat job. They kept me informed by phone, text and email of the progress of installation from ordering to installation. Just do a deal with RTE and BBC to get recording back and it will be the perfect service !!

Any chance you'd tell me via PM? I work for eir so I'd love to know! As far as I was aware the FOTS team have no access to special pricing so I'd be curious to know.

I'm sales myself, just retail though so I'd have no way to find or change any special pricing given to you. Not that I'd want to anyway!

Can an eir app be put on another android box so I can use it in another room?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭galtee boy

Yes, multiroom is supposed to be two boxes I think, but I have it on the two android boxes they sent me and I tried it on an Apple 4K box also and I can get it on that also.

Is the interface suitable for an older person on the android box? I'm just thinking of moving an older relative over from VM streaming.

The Apple TV app would be WAY too much for her.

I saw previous answers in this thread suggesting that yes, you can put it on another Android box or Apple TV box and login from another room, but I don't have direct experience of this myself.

I have a related question - I'm getting ready to place an order, but it's not giving me any option to add a second Android box for multiroom before I place the order. It does say that multiroom is €9.99 a month but doesn't seem to give me any option for this.

What's the best way for me to achieve multiroom? I know I could pick up a second-hand Apple TV, but I don't want different remotes in the two rooms.

I would say yes, its very user friendly I think, the Android box comes with a proper "old fashioned " type remote, with clearly marked buttons etc. The tiny silver Apple remote would be a nightmare for an elderly person in my opinion. The epg is simple and well laid out, not as attractive as the Sky epg, but it does what it says on the tin.

You could buy a "Strong"made android box on Amazon and remotes should be similar

I'm wondering if anyone else has a problem with being logged out of the eir App on an AppleTV box. It happens us from time to time but is normally solved by inputting the credentials or rebooting the box.
Yesterday we were logged out of the box in the living room and couldn't get back in. Our other two AppleTV boxes were working fine. Today, everything is working fine again, once we put in our username and password.

I just force close the app and restart it again. This sort this problem out, only happens occasionally.

Same as above. Rarely happens, but just force the app to close and open it again. Have never needed to login.

That always worked for me, or telling wifey to turn power on/off. Not this time - it just hung on a blank screen, nó matter what I did. Monday I tried again and I got the login screen. Once I logged in all was good.

I don't really care, but wifey gets annoyed (really annoyed) if she can't see her soaps.

We're up and running on Eir fibre and TV since Monday. There was supposed to be a technican calling to install everything, but I didn't get any details of an appointment, so I went ahead and muddled through it myself without too much difficulty, The wifi is good, definitely getting noticeably better speeds through the house than with the Virgin cable broadband and wifi. It might help that the router is in the hall rather than at the TV.

I was able to pick up a second hand Apple TV/remote, which is better value than getting it through Eir.

The Eir TV works fine. I still reckon that Sky Stream had the best product concept, as it was designed to let the user forget which streaming service they were using, and search worked across all services. It was just too buggy though. With Eir TV, you have to explicitly switch in and out of the Eir TV app for the main channels, to the separate app for Netflix or Prime or whatever. Eir is a bit more restrictive than Virgin in not allowing me to jump back and forward on current shows, but that's not the end of the world.

My main problem now is that I can't login to my Eir account. I know I have the right email address as I got all their activation emails, but it keeps telling me that my password is wrong, and I'm not getting password reset emails. I spoke to their support line yesterday, and got the impression that they had a general problem with this, not just me. Is anyone else having the same problem?

I have no problem logging into myEir, so it doesnt look like a general problem. Your browser cookies might be directing eir to incorrect credentials? Try opening an "Incognito" window in your browser (3 dots menu in Chrome, etc.), and logging into myEir with fresh credentials. Alternatively, try deleting your cookies, or opening a different browser.

I got eir tv and fibre about a month ago. They gave me two andriod boxes with proper "old fashioned " remotes with buttons. There is a button for Netflix and a button for Prime, one press in and one press straight back to whatever tv channel you were watching. I have an apple box also with the eir app on it, but hardly use it, because the apple remote is a right pain in the butt.

It took a second call to the support line, answered as 'Eircom' I swear. He did mention they had some problem which has since been resolved, so he was able to request a password reset which came through, so I'm in the account now, and was able to set up my Prime subscription too.

I had a good reason for requesting the Apple boxes over Android, based on previous advice on this thread, but I can't actually remember what it was. I'm finding the Apple remote to be fine, it's a bit strange to have no 'back' button and to use the menu button for everything, but we'll get used to that. Buttons for Netflix and Prime would be handy for sure.

    Hi,

Would anyone have a working Eir TV apk for android 11?

    Thanks

Apple seems to get these weird hangups about UI/UX. I can't really see any reason why they wouldn't allow a 3rd party remote with numerical keys - you can see loads of the IPTV operators like Eir, Free, Salt, Deutsche Telekom (Magenta TV), EE and others all adopted that same 3rd party custom remote because customers were complaining about the Apple Remote, but it still didn't have a numeric pad and nor did the app have channel numbers, which frankly with a cable-replacement type IPTV service is just a pain in the rear and means navigating menus all the time to change channel or only relying on up/down buttons.

I assume it has to be some Apple TV design philosophy obsessively rule bound thing, as there's literally no reason why the app couldn't use any Bluetooth controller. Their loss though - just means a lot of cable companies / IPTV operators were enthusiastic and are now dropping the hardware / leaving it as a BYOD option. It's nice hardware, but hamstrung by nonsense like that, at least if it's planning to be a pay-tv cable-like box as an option.

They get similar hangups about aspect of iOS like flatly refusing to let you edit phone numbers inline in the phone app or turn off the touchtone sound effects.

Many TV remotes work with the AppleTV, as well. I have LG, Samsung and LG Tv"s all working fine.
This will still not give you TV channel numbers, at least I couldn't find a way of doing this.

It's a shame that they don't have weird hangups about getting the basics of their own UI/UX right. Look at the **** lack of colour contrast on the Continue button below. And the strange 1-6 layout of the number keys, just looks off. There was something odd with key press sounds as well, only working for every second key, which is off putting when you're trying to put in a long, strong password.

It's a lot easier when you are using the iPhone remote - as you get a full keyboard.

I get the sense they don't really focus on the product as much as they could - it has very slick aspects, just then … you'd wonder.

Another thing we were told in work about the switch from Apple to Android TV was that the majority of people in Ireland use Android so therefore it's a lot easier to deal with Android TV, logging into Google services etc.

Obviously having to pay a premium to Apple for each box vs having a generic Android box helps a lot too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 977 ✭✭✭crinkley

isn’t it like 55% 45% so not a huge difference. Thankfully I still got an apple box but with the eir remote which is not as slick as the Apple one. Since they got rid of being able to record on the majority of channels if I was getting an android box of eir would just say no thanks. Except for sport I never watch live tv but the Apple TV at least lets me have access to bbc iPlayer

Rather small difference. Irish mobile OS stats:

    November 2025

    Android

    51.4%

    iOS

    48.38%

Quite a big contrast to Iliad's home market, France:

    Android

    66.83%

    iOS

    32.65%

Just illustrates that it can be quite risky to take an extrapolation from another EU country on this one. Anglophone countries tend to be quite iOS centric, and Ireland isn't an exception to that.
