Probably one of those fancy American ones, like a Yukon Gold 😂

    My kindred spud 😆

I'm trying to play some of the indies on GP for some quick gamer score!

Welsh Hunter has a 90 min 100% guide on this one, so that's probably worth the 1,000G

Finished Dispatch last night. Absolutely loved it. The story, the characters, the writing… it was just a really fun time.

I still think the general 'dispatching' gameplay was great, but there were some frustrations in the final episode. There can sometimes be a mission restriction where you'll fail a mission if you send heroes whose skills exceed a certain value (eg. you fail if your heroes points are more than 8 in Combat), but to succeed in the mission, you also probably need to get your points close enough to that to give you a better spread. The trouble is, when you've been min-maxing your skill points for different heroes along the way and the final stretch of gameplay is so hectic that half your heroes are resting or busy, you end up either easily exceeding it (which would be a definite fail) or being nowhere near it and likely failing. It wasn't so bad in the earlier episodes, but it really hampered me in the final episode.

Still though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Far fewer choices than previous Telltale games overall, but the writing is so damn good that it really doesn't matter, you can really just enjoy the ride. And even without the writing and story, I'd love a DLC where you can just do the dispatching, sort of like Inscryption's Kaycee's Mod.

Actually just played through the first episode of Dispatch last night. Most striking thing is that one of these games has finally hit the level of production quality it really needs to sell the premise. If it wasn't for the QTEs, occassional dialogue choices and '…will remember that' notes in the left hand corner… this wouldn't at all look out of place as an animated show on a streaming platform. Not just the excellent cel-shaded art style, but the cinematography and dialogue framing is cinematic and organic in a way these kinds of games usually aren't. What you gain in style you lose in interactivity, but given a lot of these narrative games were basically interactive films anyway… this smartly locks in and keeps its main gameplay element entirely separate.

I enjoyed it so far, even though the dispatch gameplay section was just the tutorial. Some of the writing grated a little bit, with occassional moments of modern smarm that didn't hit quite right for me. But for the most part the conversations flow really well and the characters are well established right out of the gate - all helped, of course, that it doesn't suffer from the rigid dialogue direction that plagues many games.

Deeper into Ninja Gaiden 4 and a little mixed on it. Moment to moment, it can feel great - the most confident Platinum have been in a while I reckon. But the levels are superrrr long without a whole lot of variety, which I don't think is great for a game of this ilk. A typical mission - if you go off the beaten path for the handful of predictable side missions and collectibles - lasts around 45 mins I reckon. But that is mostly remixes of the same enemy encounters in different allocations. But that doesn't tell the full story, as really levels are 3-4 missions long of going through the same biome. So really you can spend 2-3 hours in what can feel like one long level with occassional chapter breaks. The second major set of levels is particularly egregious in this case, as you're climbing through a mountainous region to a temple only to get knocked back down to a lower level twice. This really seems like it could've been a great 8-9 hour game rather than the 12-15 hour one it's threatening to be.

The platforming / rail-riding / wing-suiting bits between the combat are too simplistic and repetitive to really make a lot of difference. At least, like the combat, they're extremely fast-paced, so they don't waste too much time.

The first two weapons are also very samey, with no real need to switch between them. Third one I just unlocked but could be a little different, while I've heard the fourth is a lot different. Still, 6 or so hours in and there's been no real need to switch between them mid-fight or mid-level.

Still fun, just doesn't quite have the elegance of Platinum's best games or the sheer brutal focus of OG Ninja Gaiden (as I said earlier, the sheer volume of combat options feels too busy).

Playing some Pokemon Z-A and you'd swear I was playing a different game from the one YouTubers are talking about. You'd swear it was the second coming of Rise of the Robots. It has issues but it's also loads of fun. Nobody hates pokemon more than pokemon fans and they hate it so much they'd rather play **** like Palworld instead of pokemon.

Lumines Arise really is incredible.Even better on PSVR2.

    8 hours in.

Beat Journey on normal but failed with 37 seconds to go on an hour and a half "Journey Survival" run. Fairly annoying.

Online Burst Battles are tough. Have only managed to win 2 so far from 6 attempts.

The songs could be better is my only complaint. Highly recommend even at the slightly high 40e price.

Are we all set for the Half Life 3 reveal? Seems to be a growing consensus it's happening within the week.

If it's announced soon I wouldn't be surprised by a sharpish release thereafter.

I'd heard it was to be announced in September and released this month and that the hardware was meant to be out pre-Christmas too. That obviously slipped somewhere along the line.

    November reveal and February release?

Doesn't 3 magpies indicate a girl? So Alyx to be the main character in Half Life 3?

There you have it. Lead character confirmed.

Now all we need is a new Valve VR game.

Today is HL2's 21st birthday which would be a good day to announce something. I remain skeptical, but just saying.

They'll hardly do a reveal over the weekend though. Half Life 1 launched on November 19th so perhaps that’s a potential date?

Unusually there is nothing scheduled to appear on the Steam Store top banner between 18th November and 8th December, which has not happened since the Steam Store was overhauled. It's used for major game launches and whatnot. Half Life Alyx appeared on it for a few weeks after it was announced. Probably a coincidence but unusual all the same.

anyone play Tormented Souls 2? I really liked it. Definitely got the original silent hill vibes at the school part. A few annoying bugs that ment I had to reload previous saves so I won’t be doing a no save run for a while.

Eurogamer is doing xbox360 at 20 articles.

I'm going to get my pipe and slippers as my arthritis is acting up.

The 360 is my favourite retro console.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,677 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Only Xbox console I ever had (well, I had two of them since one RROD'd on me).

I really liked the 360 though. Hell of a console. Once the PS3 came out though I mostly only used the 360 for a few exclusives and for multiplayer games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,199 ✭✭✭The Raging Bile Duct

I never had a 360, I bought a PS3 cheaply at the tail-end of its life. I didn't play it after picking up the PS4 and any PS3 era games that I played since then were ones remastered or ported to the PS4.

How do the games from the PS360 era hold up now? Because of the switch in the PS hardware architecture from 3 to 4, you were never going to have the backwards compatibility of the Xbox1 and the remasters or ports are going to be tweaked or updated for better or worse.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Not mine but a pretty good console all the same and the best of the Xbox family. I ended up preferring the PS3 in the end despite it being a complete disaster for about 2 years. That era had some big performance issues but also the indie side of things was a real shake up for the industry. Things like achievements and digital had Nintendo and Sony scrambling. Trophies were a disaster and the I still think the infrastructure for them is awful and their PS3 shop was a real after thought that looked worse and worse as the gen progressed. Nintendo just weren't ready there either with wiiware being badly managed and the lacklustre amount of onboard memory.

Buying games on the Wii was a terrible experience. I did it once and the game I bought was so shíte, I never bothered again.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Depends on the games. A lot of the library did get remastered and was available on PC as well. Some games run great but like a lot of games from that era there can be performance issues. DF jokingly called it the 15-20 fps era. There's plenty of great games and it was home to the best indie library of that gen.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,109 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The wiiware shop did have one advantage, some absolutely banging tunes from Hip Tanaka. But yeah it was hard to use and downloads were really slow.

It also used to download games and the. Install them, something the PS3 did as well but the 360 would install them as it downloaded, a really great feature. You could tell the 360 UI was created with the shop in mind whereas the PS3 was a crappy html app that crashed all the time.

But back to wiiware, there's a handful of absolute belters on there. World of goo, lost winds, the Konami rebirth games, muscle march. Bit.trip and La Mulana remake got their debut there, although with La Mulana the shops management was so bad it got delayed until after the WiiU came out in Europe. Outside of that though wiiware was pretty barren. At least the virtual console was great especially the consoles were M2 handled the emulation.

Some would argue retro specifically applies to the pre-3d era... with any retro looking games made after this point being called retro-style. Maybe instead of retro, we call the older 3d games classic.
