This looks great from promo videos and prices in the UK look competitive vs the BMW IX3. Question is when will it be available here and will it be paddy spec’d completely (everything taken out to get a bottom of the barrel spec/low entry price but ultra expensive options (double, triple uk option prices) or will they make it competitive?

I really like Mercedes cars but cannot justify the price gouging (especially in options) here vs other brands. They cannot go to the direct to customer model fast enough IMO. Be great to see more of these on the roads!

I saw a couple of video studio reviews and it does look good. Apart from removal of hyperscreen I dont think it will be stripped out much at all because its always going to be over grant threshold anyway.

Its the stuff struggling to keep under 60k that gets less spec, a big problem a few years ago with very mainstream mid 40k cars today (look at the amount of low spec Audi Q4s and small battery enyaq for sale with 22/23 plates for example)

looks really good. You would have though they would have to compete on price here with ix3 but it looks like they are holding out to see can ix3 keep up with demand, ie they may not have to really compete on price if a car can’t be sourced for a year or two anyway.

I was told no Irish prices available until sometime in December. If you go on Mercedes website you can fill in your details to go on a list to be allowed to order when the order book opens. It’s as if they are anticipating more orders than cars which is a bit presumptuous.

could be that they know they don’t have a big allocation also so can set the price to suit that and other marques availability also. December seems a long way off though considering uk prices have been available for a while.

Prices available. They don’t seem to be Paddy spec’d and seem to compare decently well to UK. This is great if it’s the end of the paddy spec days

does look like they’ve decided to properly compete with the ix3 which is great, looks that like for like it’s competitive with it for price, but with the reduced range. Certainly a decent spec with fancy roof and some kind of full width display although the 3 different size displays sounds like a bit of cost cutting.

You would have to think this would have started at more like 85k before the ix3 was launched. Great for the Irish market

although there is a weird dichotomy now in the market, you can pay 50k for a top spec new leaf with 600km range or just 25k more for a 4 wheel drive GLC with more range.

starting at 75k is still a lot of money, I miss the days when a new A6 costed under 50k

In real terms they are getting cheaper. Needed after the crazy jumps around 2020

  • Subscribers Posts: 17,114 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

indeed but this is cheaper than a current a6 etron avant and about the same as a normal a6 avant neither with AwD. So it’s all relative but it’s very good value compared to those, especially the a6 etron avant which is wildly overpriced relative to this. Not sure if non all wheel drive variants will come and bring down price for starting in mid 60s like the ix3?

Big price drops coming for a6 etron and q6 soon , I was taking to sales guy in Audi. Can see the configuration for those models is down for over a week now too.

Ha, just checked and they are back up now with new pricing. Basic q6 starting at 62k.

the Q6 pricing was out before Christmas, mentioned on ix3 thread and etron thread, not seen the same ones for A6 etron are they up too?

does seem that not only are more models coming but there are 3 full models below the 400:

The GLC 400 4MATIC with EQ technology, the GLC 250 with EQ technology, the GLC 300 4MATIC with EQ technology and the GLC 300+ with EQ technology use a nickel-manganese-cobalt battery (NMC) designed for maximum range and high charging speed. It has a usable energy content of 94.4 kWh or 85.5 kWh and is characterised by a high energy density in a compact installation space.

so next down looks to be the AwD 300, then 300+ 2 wheel drive, then 250 2 wheel drive. You would have to to figure at least a €5k drop per model if not more, so

    GLC 300 4MATIC starting 70k

    GLC 300+ starting 65k

    GLC 250 starting 60k.

The quote above from Mercedes seems to say they’ll all have the same battery, so a 2wd version like the 250 might approach the 800km range. Although some reports say the 300+ is the ‘long range’ version. Looks like some car for that money.

nothing much on lower spec models, but embargo on driving reviews must be up today, piles of them now up on YouTube. 400 model Appears have incredible actual amg like performance, combined with ultra quiet and comfortable ride on the air suspension, the rear steering seems a great option too, starting at 73k here for this base one.

Seems like it’s a proper alternative to ix3 with only really the range, letting it down quite a bit in comparison. Presume it will sell really well for Mercedes customers and possibly to a lot of others when the other variants come along at cheaper prices , which may be below the above guesswork now also

There’s quite a few things on this that I prefer to the IX3. Looks and actual physical controls for a start. The range and timeframe for availablity swung it for BMW though.

it’s actually quite a tricky one as they would combine into a great car! love the merc exterior (except silly chrome trim on flush handles), hate that there is no good darker grey option. Love the steering wheel, absolutely hate the interior screen. Love that all wheel steering comes with the air suspension. Love the properly practical accessible frunk.

Hard to go against the ix3 for the better value and range and calmer interior. I’ll prob hold off changing for 2-3 years and would expect that ix3 would have air suspension by then too. Of course the 300+ version of glc with better range probably our by then also and the various estate variants based on these platforms.

Really to see so many really good cars coming as options though and at not the ridiculous prices we are used to seeing.

In depth review from Thomas there,

Its a nicer place to be than the IX3 imo and most people dont actually need the extra range, but they still want it,

Tricky choice between the two, the merc is the more luxury option but drives very well it appears

  • Subscribers Posts: 17,114 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

I don’t even think it’s that people want it as much as they know the value of the extra range and it makes the Merc seem more overpriced relatively. It’s pretty flashy too even with black pack to reduce all the chrome a little. Why they have the chrome strip on the flush door handles I will never know.

They have definitely gone for the luxury feel and demographic, feels like it’s the s class comfort version but with a fair bit of bling and plenty of go. The ix3 is more driver and utilitarian focused.

Would have thought you will see a great deal of both of them on the road in the future and both great cars. Will be interesting to see the relative pricing when the rear wheel drive models come along. Seems like the 300+ from Mercedes will be the key one with still 400bhp or so and 750km expected range. Or maybe the 200 will be the big seller here with only 550km range but still close to 300bhp and starting for under €60k. If you could spec that with air and steering pack and bring it in under 65k it would look good value.

Thomas reckons its the best car merc are making at the moment which is pretty high praise.

Remove before Race very impressed also, was also disappointed there wasn’t any black on black ones for the press. That’s the classic look for these imo and also what most people here seem to go for!

I’m impressed with the ‘mid’ level screen in this also. Don’t mind the bezels at all.

I went on the Mercedes configurator last night to play with the specs of this. It’s very confusing, even to work out the base spec let alone various AMG packages.
it seemed overall more expensive than the iX3 but I have to admit I prefer the look of the Mercedes. I must be getting old.

ah its a nice looking motor, especially in AMG spec in black!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,193 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Battery warranty possibly better on the Merc if it’s the same as EQE & EQS at 10 years/250K Km’s

  • Subscribers Posts: 17,114 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

hah, never would have considered a Merc, but could drive the black amg. Although no doubt am getting old, have only has a couple of jeeps over the years, always estates for last 3 or 4. Now looking at highish knees in the likes of the new i3 the SUV versions look pretty easy on the back also! Do really like how relatively low they are also.

On the spec, the base spec for me, plus metallic black and amg plus (gets the nicest wheels, black pack, etc etc for 10k) plus the agility and comfort package for the air suspension and 4 wheel steering comes to 93k€. It does let you leave out the comfort access package so you get normal door handles, but no keyless entry. Can quote easily get it well over 100k

93k is madness albeit a lovely looking motor in that spec

  • Subscribers Posts: 17,114 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

that’s without the hyper screen, without heated steering wheel etc. a well spec’d amg plus is 100k. having said that 0-60 under 4s, rides like an s class and great interior space. Have to figure they will sell well here, it’s basically what used to be an actual amg.

If it follows the pattern of other high end EV's , you will be able to buy a one year old high spec UK import that retails new here at over 100k for 70k. Same will apply to BMW IX3 and Volvo ex60
