Loadings sounds like a complete scam, amazing the insurance companies get away with that.

If you're talking about the lifetime community loadings (only reference to loading I see in this thread) that's not a case of the insurance companies getting away with it, but rather it's a government policy to load those who only take out insurance later in life. Now I'm sure they didn't protest the implementation by any means, but it's not like they're pulling a fast one with it.

I'm currently on Laya Transform Plus, which is around €130 per month, and I want to keep the price around the same. Renewal is 1st January. HIA suggests other Laya plans with worse benefits or higher excess or Level Health Plan C, but that also looks worse. Any tips on better plans welcome. If I'm to be admitted for anything serious I will choose SJH every time, or the Hermitage for day case or tests.

Most years my claims are more than the annual policy cost with usually a few consultant visits and day case procedures. I'm reluctant to increase the excess for any procedures as I'll probably end up paying it, but I'm never sure about the importance of coverage for high tech hospitals and Mater Private and Blackrock Clinic. Health insurance has been very important to me and helped with access for nearly all issues, but I will say it made no difference other than covering consultant fees for heart problems so far - waiting lists for cardiology have been equally long private as public over the years!

If you are getting more back than you are putting in, why don't you just stick with your existing plan, regardless of price? It seems weird to expect others to subsidise you while you continue the same level of cover and pay less.

Ok, not sure where I suggested I want to pay less or have others subsidise me? I just want to check I'm not on an outdated plan that has a better alternative, same as everyone else here. I'm sorry that upsets you.

Unfortunately due to some health issues, I have to make claims - that's the whole point of health insurance for absolute everyone who has it. A single day case procedure is billed for €600-1200 from what I see - it's not long adding up. Of course I'm not getting back more than has been paid over a lifetime of insurance cover since I was a child because a few years of serious health problems in recent years. And of course I'd rather be well and not need to claim. Thanks for your advice anyway.

When I use the HIA tool, there is a 1k difference between the plans it recommends, is this normal?

Can I ask for those in the know, we joined for the first time this year and have laya inspire plus.

I'm in my 40s so have loadings etc.

We didn't have a waiting period for treatment or claims as we got added under a family members corporate plan.

If we move providers because we had no waiting period would that transfer or would that only be with laya?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

the waiting period waiver is linked to being in that corporate plan. If you come out of that standard waiting periods would apply

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

It really depends on what level of cover you are looking for.

    entry level public only

Public and private with limited no day to day cover

Private hospital cover with day to day c50% GP

Private room in private hospital with 50-75% cover for day to day

    Full cover for orthopaedic procedures

Full cover for mater Private & Blackrock

Full cover for mater private blackrock and orthopaedic

the starting point on the list above is €500 and it goes up to c€5k for best value plans at the upper end! So depending on what level of cover you are looking for big price variations

Loading are there to incentivise people to join before the are 35…. They did not exist prior to 2015…

Loading make the system fairer as without them people might wait until they are older to take out cover. For the community rated system to work it needs younger people on cover to subsidy’s older members!

    Hi Ruddy,

2 adults and 2 kids on 4D Health 4 - Corporate plan paid for by my employer but I still pay BIK.

Plan seems to be increasing and benefits decreasing.

Anything similar to it for cheaper or even better?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

it’s getting to be very expensive. It is excellent cover however, likely your employer has 10% discount to… if not they should get an adviser in place (cough 😂).

If I was speaking with your employer I would be telling them to look at Horizon 4 the exact same plan as 4D 4 with three changes to hospital cover , co payment for orthopaedic is €2,500 versus €2,000, new ophthalmic co payment of €500 and new €1,000 co payment for certain cardiac procedures. Everything else is the exact same. Again if your employer has a good adviser they should have an upgrade waiver in place to allow people upgrade with no waiting period for any of the above.

Horizon 4 isn’t as attractive if no discount or waiver of upgrades (ie if you are a regular consumer)

HelathGuide 3 is almost the same as 4D4 €75 excess versus €50 and increase in co payment for orthopaedic to €3,000. You also lose personalised packages. But have slightly better dental and physio. It’s a very good option and significantly cheaper.

If a regular consumer can get 5% off health guide here: https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote

Health guide 2 is a great semi private room plan and health guide 3 good private room

    Plan.

Hi Ruddy, I just got my renewal and am shocked by the increase.

Can you suggest and alternative to Company Plan Extra Level 2? Is it worth moving from PM I48 10 to another of the PMIs, I already stepped down to PMI 48 10 last year. I also have 2 young adults on EnhancedCare 250. It's all adding up.

    Would really appreciate some advice.

    Thank you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Definitely worth moving, PMI 48 10 is a very similar just has a new excess for day cases. If you don’t have many day cases much better on PMI 48 10. One major negative of both plans is there is a nightly excess of €50 in a private room which is not great.

If regular admissions PMI 24 10 might be a good as fixed excess of €150 for private rooms (but warning doesn’t cover private hospital in Waterford).

Again if get Health Guide 3 you get €75 excess per stay versus €50 per night so it’s a good option with the 5% discount.

I'm on pmi 5310 for 2 adults/2 kids. Costing me 4k in January an increase of €250.

Is there any decent alternative to save a few quid? We need the bons and hi tech hospitals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

That’s a good plan still. One thing you may or not be aware is it doesn’t have cover for VHI 360 centres like most plans that have cover with a €75 excess per visit.

Small saving to be made by moving to PMI 52 10 which has slightly lower hospital excess for day cases and higher overnight excess. Additionally it has only 60% cover for orthopaedic versus 80%. It’s also has VHI 360 cover.

Alternatives are similarly priced with Laya (inspire care) so likely you stay where you are I think

    Hi Ruddy

Have renewal coming up on 1st of Jan and being quoted €8k….it was never this high before just over €5.5k before

Have 2 adults on Laya Simply Connect Plus

1st Kid (adult 20yrs) on Signify plus

2nd Kid (17…will be 18 on renewal !) on Essential family connect …but will be adult on renewal

3rd Kid (12) was free but will have too pay next year as they are the only one below 18

Any pointers to get the best bang for buck ?

Look at Prosper for young adults/kids may work out a bit cheaper, I switched from essential health to Prosper for kids.

Hi @ruddy1987 that line about not covering Whitfield in Waterford, are there other plans like that that don't cover there and is there any particular reason why this is the case. What's also a worrying concern in Waterford is that UHW are apparently stopping doing private day case procedures from next month and these will now be carried out in UPMC Whitfield

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

You need to be careful, a certain number of VHI Plans have unusual restrictions on hospitals, ones most typical are Waterford and Sligo.

Laya also have plans like this, transform plus being an example that excludes lots of private hospitals in the south.

The first question I would ask is do you both definitely need full cover for orthopaedics? If so likely prosper advanced is the best solution. If one or both of you willing to take on 20% shortfall significant savings can be made.

For your young adults generally VHI have best rates so would recommend setting up a plan with them for your YA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

@ruddy1987 Is there a better option with the same benefits as Prosper Care but no more expensive? Laya is quoting €1895 from Jan 1st - I'd be switching from Transform Plus (€1670). And do you know if a waiting period will apply to the improved everyday medical benefits expenses compsred oto current plan? Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

I am assuming you are not based in Munster if your considering transform plus?

Prosper care is a strong plan still. My advice would be to take a new policy out on 31st December. It will ge for 11 months as Laya renewals always need to be 1st of month. This will avoid 1st of Jan increase.

Any recommendations on ya plans with vhi. Need some private hospital cover. Bons , hermitage. Thanks

    Hi Ruddy1987,

I have my parents on Simply Connect at present but the price has skyrocketed this year. Is there a similar plan with full orthopedic cover and hospital care that costs less? My Dad may need to get his knees done at some point so I've kept him on this plan for the last number of years but it's becoming unaffordable.

I'm on Connect Choice and from what I can tell the benefits are worse this year and the price has gone up. Could you suggest a cheaper alternative with good overall hospital cover and day to day expenses.

    Thanks in advance

    MB05

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Assuming renewal is 1st of January, If so I’d recommend setting up a new plan with Laya from 31st of December on prosper advanced and keeping connect choice also.

Both plans go up on 1st of January. Connect choice is great value and benefits until 31st December but has a double whammy from 1st of January of price increase and benefit cuts (hospital excess going up and orthopaedic shortfall going from 20% to 40%).

lastly you mention your dad has a bad knee and no mention of your mam having an similar issues, if so you should have them on different plans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Have a look at something like PMI 66 10 or PMI 43 16. Both currently cheaper for a YA 20 and better cover overall.

    Hi Ruddy1987

I’m on Irish life health guide 2 for two adults and I expect it’s going to go up a fair bit from €3200 this year. I have some serious health issues needing attention from January 2026. From what I see on HIA this seems to be a good plan. Would appreciate your opinion and thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

Thanks. I'll look at at starting the new policy in December. I'm in Kildare and Transform Plus is what I already have so I'm not worried about Munster hospitals. I'm thinking Prosper Care might be worth the increase though.

Health Guide 2 is a very good plan still. TotalHealthCover.ie have 5% discount on Heath Guide for new customers and can also give 5% off if you appoint them as your broker on your renewal (email info@totalhealthcover.ie with policy number).

if you want to stay with Irish Life I’d be looking at a plan like Better Select might suit (once you not planning on using high tech).

Health Guide with 5% discount is as good as almost anything on the market. So if happy with the cover I wouldn’t be recommending any change.
