Róis in Button Factory last night bringing the whole wakehouse experience

The last section of the show involved the chief mourner handing out the sandwiches to only those who looked sad enough, the corpse being carried up on stage only to be stripped of thier shroud and then the pall bearers bumping n grinding off them

And all this going on while Róis is singing about getting the ride in the wakehouse

Utterly bonkers in a good way

4th time seeing her this year and she's only going from strength to strength

    Incredibly talented artist

The Last Dinner Party - 3Arena

Simply phenomenal. Impossible to pigeonhole for me but each style they adapt they excel in. I think Abigail Morris is right up there with the best front people in music right now and having seen them (and loved them) in Olympia just over a year ago they're bigger, brasher, more confident and they're just so much fun to see live.

Stage was class and for 1st show on their tour there was no signs of rustiness or nerves.

Looking forward to it. First time seeing Affection to Rent

They were outstanding, they have been performing the album in full on a record store tour in the UK over the last few weeks so they are tight but there stage craft is brilliant and Abigail is born to be a star, oozing charisma.

The OH had not seen them before and was blown away.

The start of second best was brilliant

So so good. I remember that they played This Is The Killer Speaking in the Olympia and there was a song in middle of the set that I hadn't heard and I thought sounded amazing. Did a bit of research and it's called Big Dog, apparantly been knocking around since Nothing Matters - hope that gets a release at some point.

Couldn’t tell how many times I’ve been to Whelan’s Upstairs over the last few years. Tonight was a bit different.

Stratford Rise were their usual awesome as support, pulling their musical acrobatics in all sorts of directions. Brilliant.

When they left the stage, the audience changed from the usual early 20’s student-type to mid-50’s music big wigs. All there to see Affection to Rent play their new album. The band have been backed by Carlos of Fontaines fame as one to watch, hence the interest.
Instead of the usual single photographer there to document whoever was playing, you had five or six cameras all snapping away at each of the five members.

My thoughts? They started off slow enough but the songs progressed in energy-level as they went on, finishing with a couple of belters - the only two songs currently on Spotify. They look the part, played the part and the audience were 100% behind them. Managed to nab a set list so let’s hope they make it big time. Good luck to them!

Nerina Pallot in Bello Bar. Lots of chat and jokes in between the songs - the informal nature working well in the small setting - but a very respectful, quiet audience during the songs themselves.

2026 Gigs and Events: An Evening with The Fast Show, Prima Facie, Stereolab (NCH), Foo Fighters, David Byrne (3Arena), Belle and Sebastian (x2), Kraftwerk, Paul Simon, David Byrne (St. Anne's Park), Keb' Mo', Metallica (x2), Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Embrace, Sigur Rós with the Ulster Orchestra, Crash Test Dummies, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Ben Folds, Jeff Tweedy, Nicko McBrain

They played big dog again last night so here's hoping, at the very least I see it on the deluxe re-release of from the pyre that will surely be released by the end of the tour

Interesting to hear the hype machine was out for Affection to Rent. I had wanted to go but a football injury and the weather dissuaded me, I had wondered how a band with two songs were charging €18! Hopefully the new album sounds good when it lands

Must admit i am shocked to hear there's a buzz about Affection To Rent. There really isn't much to get worked up about. I've found them less interesting each time i've seen them.

Third Foggy Notions gig of the week for me tonight in another sold out Workmans. This time it was the turn of Water From Your Eyes to deliver the hits. And they did so with aplomb. They have dance grooves, pop hooks and a nice twist of experimentalism to keep it interesting. Singer informed us that the only time they played here before it was to an audience of 1 who, like them, was American. So they were pretty pleased with a sold out show to locals this time around. I see they're supporting yer one from Paramore next year so i guess some folks here will get to see what they're about. I have no idea if they are musically compatible as i've never heard a Hayley whateverhernameis song in my life.

If i was the ATN bookers i'd be lining up WFYE though as i reckon they'd go down very well.

Yeah, sorry I missed these, they sound interesting. Hope to catch them on the festival circuit maybe next Summer.

Moving Pictures - Grand Social, Friday 14th. A brilliant night of Rush music, played excellently by the trio. Have to say Guitar and Bass tones were spot on. Great set-list, many highlights - but Losing It was mega.

I'm late with this review, but Perfume Genius was really good last week in the National Stadium. Verdict still out on it as a venue, but it was one of the most respectful crowds I've ever seen for a gig. There were a couple of quiet moments in the set and you could hear a pin drop. Nice not to be dodging chatters!

BC Camplight were superb tonight in the Button Factory. Love their last few albums but live they are on a different level. More rocky, more dancey. And he has the charisma, humour and presence too. Brilliant gig

Ah, love him. 3rd time seeing him, he always brings it. He's a funny fecker. Connection is everything at small gigs and he has that in spades. Loads of great songs now. She's gone cold and Last Rotation absolute classics. Great night.

Great to hear BC Camplight and band are on good form, seeing them Thursday.

What time did they come on stage, and were the support band much good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,173 ✭✭✭Stillill42

They were on at 9. Not in in time for the support. You'll have a great night buddy. Enjoy.

OXN in the NCH just superb. First time seeing a band in the NCH that the venue really suited - atmospheric in layers, with superb acoustics - captivating. Short gig, slightly less than an hour but definitely in my top 3 this year. The Scott Walker cover was very "Cocteau twins / This Mortal Coil"

Sprints very good in Vicar Street. All the touring has defo made them a much more confident outfit, loads of great songs now, no bother adjusting to the bigger venue. Mosh pit there from the off, albeit a very polite moshpit. No Modern Job?? Unless I missed it on my lightening break for the jacks? Anyway, good night. Quite enjoyed Yard too.A bit too much knob twiddling and too little guitar for me but much better live than on record.

Agreed, really enjoyed it. Most crowd surfing I've seen for years. Nice to see Karla crowd surfing after calling out previous unsavoury episodes, in fact a lot of women crowd surfing which suggests a good crowd

For me the new stuff still isn't as good as the old stuff, but it has grown on me a lot. And I had no hesitation in buying a ticket for Whelan's in January, especially as my leg is a bit knackered so I couldn't join the mosh as much as I'd have liked tonight, hopefully make up for it then!

I really liked Yard, was right on the barrier for them. Looking forward to seeing them headlining with their own crowd somewhere, I'd say that'll be even more fun

I really liked it as well, sounded good even from the cheap seats. I think it was maybe 4-5 songs from the album plus a couple of others? Not too sure.

Not sure what to think of Richard Dawson, haven't really heard his music before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,048 ✭✭✭Dreamweapon

I was also at Sprints. Was willing to give them another go if i picked up a ticket for €20 or less. As i was successful on that front i made my way to Vicar St. Thought the sound was really muddy for the first couple of songs and was wondering was it my post-MBV ears! The bassist has clearly realised he's in a rocknroll band, definitely had the look of someone who's recently discovered the perks of the job. I can understand why folks like them but they've far outlived their usefulness to me i'm afraid. I unequivocally won't be bothering with them again. Oh, and what's the craic with all the Messianic poses? Lord God Bono himself wouldn't have a look in.

The worst Yard set i've seen. The last two songs were ok but maybe big rooms just don't suit them. I didn't bother with the Grand Social afters for Theatre and Shark School.

I did the first couple of times but ever decreasing circles since then. Time to call a halt now!

Was really looking forward to Slyrydes in The Grand Social. Had been listening to them on Spotify beforehand and they were right up my street. Unfortunately, they sounded better recorded than live.
However, the support Mother of Pearl, a Limerick shoegaze outfit, sounded fantastic. The four or five of us in the audience really enjoyed them.

Was also at Sprints last night. Thought they were brilliant and the gig was just tons of fun.

The new record sounds great live.

Enjoyed Yard. They would be great in a sweet club.

Finally got to see BC Camplight last night in Roisins, excellent show.

Never knew he lived in Galway for 6 weeks when he was forced to leave the UK

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 547 ✭✭✭Sean Seoighe

    Didn't know that either!

Saw him in Button Factory during the week and thought he and the band were great. 3rd time seeing him (1st was Workmans - solo, 2nd was Whelans a year or 2 back) and each show I thought was quite different to each other but every one captivating. I think Jessica makes a great impact and is a welcome addition. He's a great songwriter and has clearly been through the mill - I'm rooting for him and look forward to whenever he next comes over here.

Went way outside my comfort zone this evening with a visit to McDowells pub in Inchicore, a first for me. Going through the listings this morning, a name cropped up that rang a bell - Answerer. I’ve mentioned them here previously when I saw them above a pub in Phibsboro.
They were one of four bands playing - a really eclectic bunch that made for an interesting evening of music.
Muckish, a duo that could be described as electronic noise opened, followed by great bouzouki/rock performance by carparkscifi. After Answerer, Fierce Shook were headlining.

I managed to record three of Answerer’s songs. Would love to hear what you think.
