    Wilson in his post match interview after the argentina test in reference to the final 20 minutes:

    “There's a lot of belief there we could get the job done and 'Rabs' [James O’Connor] was a real calm voice there in the end, telling us what to do and everyone just listened to him and did that."

    Honestly, the biggest positive was that he came on for Tane — who’d been a bit of a liability. JOC steadied things.

    Not sure what way Schmidt lines them up this weekend. JOC started and played the full 80 against South Africa and they won. Then benched for three straight? Age and playing abroad definitely count against him.

    A bit fearful of this weekend in fairness, I also think with ikitau coming in will be another massive boost.

    Incredibly this will be Australia's 14th test since July 5th when they kicked off the season against Fiji. 14 games in 20 weeks.

    Think they would be if Valentini and Lolesio had stayed fit and Skelton had been available. I think the results don't reflect how much they've improved.

    My guess at the teams.
    Ireland:
    J O'Brein; T O’Brien, Ringrose? or Henshaw, McCloskey? or Aki, J Lowe;
    J Crowley, J Gibson-Park;
    A Porter, D Sheehan, T Furlong;
    J Ryan, T Beirne;
    R Baird, van der Flier? or Doris, C Doris or Conan.
    Reps: R Kelleher, P McCarthy, T Bealham, I Henderson, Conan or Prendergast, C Casey, Prendergast, Hansen? or Aki or Henshaw.

    Australia:
    M Jorgensen; F Daugunu, J Suaalii, L Ikitau, D Pietsch;
    J O'Connor, J Gordon;

    A Bell, B Pollard, T Tupou; N Frost, J Williams;
    R Valetini, F McReight, H Wilson.
    Reps: M Faessler, T Robertson, A Alaalatoa, L Salakaia-Loto, Tizzano or Samu, R Lonergan, C Gordon or Edmed, A Kellaway.

    Hope JOB has a stormer. I would prefer if Bealham, Henderson, Henshaw and Aki arent selected.
    I'd like Gus McCarthy on the bench for lineout. I'd take 70% success rate.

    Either battle hardened or on the downward side after all those games, esp with the travel involved

    My view is that we should be starting the team we think is going to start the first match of the next world cup. As close as possible including subs…

    We have already guartaneaed or top seeding in the next RWC as of last week… We have only 19 matches (I think) to the next RWC. 10 of them are 6 Nations which pay us more money that the RWC, so financially we can't risk that much on those games…

    Prizemoney for RWC 2023

    Stage

    Prize

    Quarterfinals

    £600,000 ($734,000)

    Semifinals

    £1.2m ($1.47m)

    Runners-up

    £2.5m ($3.1m)

    Final

    £4.8m ($5.9m)

    Six Nations 2025 Prize Money (Estimated)

    The stakes are high, and the rewards are even higher. Here’s the breakdown of the 2025 prize pot:

    • Winners: £6.5m
    • Runners-up: £3.5m
    • Third Place: £2.5m
    • Fourth Place: £2m
    • Fifth Place: £1.5m
    • Sixth Place: £1m

    Grand Slam Bonus: A cool £1 million awaits any nation that wins all five games, as Ireland did in 2023. If no one claims the Grand Slam, the extra cash is evenly split among the teams. This what pays for IRish rugby.

    So you get as much for coming third in 6 Nations as getting the final of the RWC… And the 6 Nations is every year.

    This is why we have really only 9 games to play with until we pick the RWC squad and then warm up games… So we need to prep now..

    Cian Treacy's rumoured team for the weekend. Was listening to Bernard Jackman and Murray Kinsella on the rugby weekly podcast and they'd both heard that the plan was for Prendergast to start at least one game this series. Make sense that it would be this one.

    15.Hansen

    14.TOB

    13.Henshaw

    12.McCloskey

    11.Lowe

    10.Prendergast

    9.JGP

    1.P McCarthy

    2.Sheehan

    3.Furlong

    4.Ryan

    5.Beirne

    6.Baird

    7.Doris

    8.Conan

    Whether it means anything or not, Sam Prendergast, Aki and Clarkson were on media duty yesterday.

    Gerry Thornley's possible team has some interesting calls, not least Doris at 7 for the injured VDF.

    Hansen

    TOB, Henshaw, McCloskey, Lowe

    Prendergast, JGP

    Porter, Sheehan, Furlong

    Ryan, Beirne

    Baird, Conan, Doris

    Dropping Hansen into the starting team, after watching all the Lions players struggling after barely playing prior to NZ, is certainly a choice.

    Really not a fan of Doris to 7.

    He's on the bench in Thornley's predicted team..

    Please say Cian Prendergast is also on the bench? Ian Henderson offers nothing at this level

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 663 ✭✭✭KevinK

    Yes, on the predicted team i saw anyway. Clarkson also

    It’s the Henshaw at 13 selection that frustrates me most there.

    I’m not as down on him as some, and thought he was decent last weekend (especially defensively), but whatever he might still have to offer at 12, he just isn’t a viable option at 13 IMO.

    Jude Postlethwaite was never going to happen (but it’s the pick I’d have loved to see), but thought Farrell might have gotten another chance.

    My guess is that he will pick strongest possible team as warm up for the big one against the Boks.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 33,950 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

    I am probably more down on him than you, though I agree he was decent against Japan. He definitely fundamentally does not have the pace to play 13 anymore though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,477 ✭✭✭✭bilston

    You even a real bee in your bonnet about Henderson, did he pish in your corn flakes or something. He did alright when he came on against NZ, he carried pretty well, the lineout was poor, but has been poor for a while no matter who plays.

    I don't disagree that I'd like to see C.Prendergast get a chance (although he doesn't as far I know cover the second row), but Henderson is far from finished.

    It's a tacit admission that we're going to offer zero attacking threat from his channel. Giving up the edge will be catastrophic, given the glacial pace of our centres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,757 ✭✭✭ersatz

    Yeah, I wouldn't be condemning him on the strength of Chicago, he had at least one decent carry, defended fine and I don't think he gave up any penalties. Well, maybe one at the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,236 ✭✭✭CowboyTed

    Answer is why?

    We can play our best teams against Boks and 6 Nations…

    In fairness they are giving the front rows chances and getting them in there… We have an issue with the ages of our Inside Centres, Ringrose is our only experienced 13.

    We loose next to nothing if we loose the game and we have limited opportunities to bring guys through… We could starting two centres that won't make the RWC against the Aussies…

    Unless your (& AF's) strongest team includes SP as the starting 10 , then you'd be wrong.

    Imho, SP is far from being Ireland's best 10, and so I'm hoping while AF seems to be selecting him versus Aus that common sense will prevail & Crowley will be reinstated as the starting 10 versus SA.

    If Ireland do select SP as the starting outhalf v SA, I will be watching the match from behind the sofa, as the SA midfield & strike runners will run down his channel all day & they will break him imho.

    n

    i don’t disagree w your general point about rotation, but there’s no chance losing to Oz sees us dropping out of the top 6 for WC, and it’s unlikely to see us even drop in rankings. Rankings are meaningless anyway, except for WC seeding.

    Did Italy beating Australia and Scotland losing to NZ not end the risk to us?

  • Subscribers, Paid Member Posts: 45,410 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

    Scotland losing didn't really have much to do with it.

    Us not losing by more than 15 to new Zealand was more significant.

    Afaik at this stage we're safe, mainly sure to the Italians.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭CONSI

    Really frustrating if Prendergast starts at 10, has shown nothing all season and AF claims to pick on form and said JC was the form player and was leading the sessions really well in camp, and if this is a game we have to win, as some are saying, because its more likely we lose next week v SA even with a strongest side, then why play a 10 who isnt playing well, Crowley has been the form 10 this season, AF needs to just back one of them now. The situation at hooker is the same, trying to give different hookers game time isnt helping our already creaking lineout, unless Sheehan is injured again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 594 ✭✭✭exiledawaynothere

    I think Crowley is a better player, but to be fair to SP he did play well when he came on last week. If they are going to give both players reasonable opportunities including off the bench then I am ok with that, but I also worry about defense against South Africa.

    What worries me is that they are very different types of players and to get the most out of them you need to have players around them that suit the game plan.

    Crowley did display the better early season form, by a distance, and his reward for that was being backed to start the last two games.

    He hasn't done enough in those two games though to put the debate to bed, especially as Prendergast had a good cameo last week and did a better job of putting guys into space and getting the attack moving.

    I was really hoping we'd emerge from this window with one or the other (most likely Crowley) taking a firm grasp on the jersey and then allowing us to build around that player moving forward, but it hasn't happened yet.
